Do not praise yourself for tomorrow's success; you never know what a day may bring forth.

Let praise come from a stranger, not from yourself, from the lips of an outsider and not from your own.

Stone is a burden and sand a dead weight, but to be vexed by a fool is more burdensome than both.

Wrath is cruel and anger is a deluge; but who can stand up to jealousy?

Open reproof is better than love concealed.

The blows a friend gives are well meant, but the kisses of an enemy are perfidious.

Someone who is full may refuse honey from the comb, but to the hungry even bitter food tastes sweet.

Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man straying from his home.

Oil and incense bring joy to the heart, but cares torment one's very soul.

Do not neglect your own friend or your father's. Do not run to your brother's house when you are in trouble. Better a neighbour near at hand than a brother far away!

Acquire wisdom, my son, and bring joy to my heart; I shall have an answer for my critics.

A shrewd person sees trouble coming and lies low; the simpleton walks right into it and pays the penalty.

Take the garment of anyone who pledges his word for a stranger; hold it as security for the unknown person.

If someone wakes another early with effusive greetings, he might as well curse him!

A constant dripping on a rainy day -- that is what a woman's nagging is like.

As well try to control the wind as to control her! As well try to pick up oil in one's fingers!

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens the wits of another.

He who guards the fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who watches his master's interests will come to honour.

As someone sees his face reflected in water, so he sees his own mind reflected in another's.

Sheol and Abaddon are insatiable; so too the human eye is never satisfied.

The smelting pot is for silver, the crucible for gold; so the character is tested by praise.

You may pound a fool in a mortar with a pestle, but his folly will never be knocked out of him.

Be careful to know the state of your flock and take good care of your herds;

for possessions do not last for ever, nor will a crown endure to endless generations.

The grass is cropped, new shoots are seen, and the green growth on the hills is gathered in;

the lambs provide you with clothing, and the he-goats with the price of a field,

while the goats' milk is food enough for your household and sustenance for your servant-girls.
