1Of the captives whom King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had taken into exile in Babylon, these were the people of the province who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town.

2They were led by Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah. The number of the men of the Israelite nation:

3the line of Parosh two thousand one hundred and seventy-two;

4the line of Shephatiah three hundred and seventy-two;

5the line of Arah seven hundred and seventy-five;

6the line of Pahath-moab, namely the lines of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand eight hundred and twelve;

7the line of Elam one thousand two hundred and fifty-four;

8the line of Zattu nine hundred and forty-five;

9the line of Zaccai seven hundred and sixty;

10the line of Bani six hundred and forty-two;

11the line of Bebai six hundred and twenty-three;

12the line of Azgad one thousand two hundred and twenty-two;

13the line of Adonikam six hundred and sixty-six;

14the line of Bigvai two thousand and fifty-six;

15the line of Adin four hundred and fifty-four;

16the line of Ater, namely that of Hezekiah, ninety-eight;

17the line of Bezai three hundred and twenty-three;

18the line of Jorah one hundred and twelve;

19the line of Hashum two hundred and twenty-three;

20the line of Gibbar ninety-five.

21The men of Bethlehem one hundred and twenty-three;

22the men of Netophah fifty-six;

23the men of Anathoth one hundred and twenty-eight;

24the men of Beth-azmoth forty-two;

25the men of Kiriath-jearim, Kephirah, and Beeroth seven hundred and forty-three;

26the men of Ramah and Geba six hundred and twenty-one;

27the men of Michmas one hundred and twenty-two;

28the men of Bethel and Ai two hundred and twenty-three;

29the men of Nebo fifty-two;

30the men of Magbish one hundred and fifty-six;

31the men of the other Elam one thousand two hundred and fifty-four;

32the men of Harim three hundred and twenty;

33the men of Lod, Hadid, and Ono seven hundred and twenty-five;

34the men of Jericho three hundred and forty-five;

35the men of Senaah three thousand six hundred and thirty.

36The priests: the line of Jedaiah, of the house of Jeshua, nine hundred and seventy-three;

37the line of Immer one thousand and fifty-two;

38the line of Pashhur one thousand two hundred and forty-seven;

39the line of Harim one thousand and seventeen.

40The Levites: the lines of Jeshua and Kadmiel, of the house of Hodaviah, seventy-four.

41The singers: the line of Asaph one hundred and twenty-eight.

42The guild of door-keepers: the line of Shallum, the line of Ater, the line of Talmon, the line of Akkub, the line of Hatita, and the line of Shobai, one hundred and thirty-nine in all.

43The temple servitors: the line of Ziha, the line of Hasupha, the line of Tabbaoth,

44the line of Keros, the line of Siaha, the line of Padon,

45the line of Lebanah, the line of Hagabah, the line of Akkub,

46the line of Hagab, the line of Shamlai, the line of Hanan,

47the line of Giddel, the line of Gahar, the line of Reaiah,

48the line of Rezin, the line of Nekoda, the line of Gazzam,

49the line of Uzza, the line of Paseah, the line of Besai,

50the line of Asnah, the line of the Meunim, the line of the Nephusim,

51the line of Bakbuk, the line of Hakupha, the line of Harhur,

52the line of Bazluth, the line of Mehida, the line of Harsha,

53the line of Barkos, the line of Sisera, the line of Temah,

54the line of Neziah, and the line of Hatipha.

55The descendants of Solomon's servants: the line of Sotai, the line of Hassophereth, the line of Peruda,

56the line of Jaalah, the line of Darkon, the line of Giddel,

57the line of Shephatiah, the line of Hattil, the line of Pochereth-hazzebaim, and the line of Ami.

58The temple servitors and the descendants of Solomon's servants amounted to three hundred and ninety-two in all.

59The following returned from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Kerub, Addan, and Immer, but could not prove by their father's line or their descent that they were Israelites:

60the line of Delaiah, the line of Tobiah, and the line of Nekoda, six hundred and fifty-two.

61Also of the priests: the line of Hobaiah, the line of Hakkoz, and the line of Barzillai who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite and went by his name.

62When these searched for their names among those enrolled in the genealogies, they could not be traced, and so they were deemed disqualified and debarred from officiating.

63The governor forbade them to partake of the most sacred food until there should be a priest able to consult the Urim and Thummim.

64The whole assembled people numbered forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty,

65apart from their slaves, male and female, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and they had two hundred male and female singers.

66Their horses numbered seven hundred and thirty-six, their mules two hundred and forty-five,

67their camels four hundred and thirty-five, and their donkeys six thousand seven hundred and twenty.

68On their arrival at the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, certain of the heads of families offered to rebuild the house of God on its original site.

69According to their ability they gave to the treasury for the fabric a total of sixty-one thousand drachmas of gold, five thousand minas of silver, and one hundred priestly vestments.

70The priests, the Levites, and some of the people stayed in Jerusalem and the neighbourhood; the singers, the door-keepers and the temple servitors, and all the rest of the Israelites, lived in their own towns.
