 <<  Amsal 16 >>

A mortal may order his thoughts, but the LORD inspires the words his tongue utters.

A mortal's whole conduct may seem right to him, but the LORD weighs up his motives.

Commit to the LORD all that you do, and your plans will be successful.

The LORD has made each thing for its own end; so he has made the wicked for a day of calamity.

One and all the proud are abominable to the LORD; depend upon it: they will not escape punishment.

Guilt is wiped out by loyalty and faith, and the fear of the LORD makes mortals turn from evil.

When the LORD approves someone's conduct, he makes even his enemies live at peace with him.

Better a pittance honestly earned than great gains ill gotten.

Someone may plan his journey by his own wit, but it is the LORD who guides his steps.

The king's mouth is an oracle; he does not err when he passes sentence.

Accuracy of scales and balances is the LORD's concern; all the weights in the bag are his business.

Wrongdoing is abhorrent to kings, for a throne rests firmly on righteousness.

Honest speech is what pleases kings, for they hold dear those who speak the truth.

A king's anger is a herald of death, and the wise will appease it.

In the light of the king's countenance is life; his favour is like a rain-cloud in the spring.

How much better than gold it is to get wisdom, and to gain discernment is more desirable than silver.

The highway of the upright avoids evil; he who watches his step preserves his life.

Pride goes before disaster, and arrogance before a fall.

Better live humbly with those in need than divide the spoil with the proud.

He who is shrewd in business will prosper, but happy is he who puts his trust in the LORD.

The sensible person seeks advice from the wise; persuasive speech increases learning.

Good sense is a fountain of life to its possessors, but a fool is punished by his own folly.

The wise person's mind guides his speech, and what his lips impart increases learning.

Kind words are like dripping honey: sweetness to the palate and health for the body.

A road may seem straightforward to the one who is on it, yet it may end as the way to death.

The labourer's appetite impels him to work, hunger spurs him on.

A scoundrel rakes up evil gossip; it is like a scorching fire on his lips.

Disaffection sows strife, and tale-bearing breaks up the closest friendship.

Anyone given to violence will entice others and lead them into evil ways.

Anyone narrowing his eyes intends dishonesty, and one who pinches his lips is bent on mischief.

Grey hair is a crown of glory, which is won by a virtuous life.

Better be slow to anger than a fighter, better control one's temper than capture a city.

The lots may be cast into the lap, but the issue depends wholly on the LORD.
