 <<  Amsal 18 >>

A solitary person pursues his own desires; he quarrels with every sound policy.

The foolish have no interest in seeking to understand, but only in expressing their own opinions.

When wickedness comes in, in comes contempt; with loss of honour comes reproach.

The words of the mouth are a gushing torrent, but deep is the water in the well of wisdom.

It is wrong to show favour to the wicked, to deprive the righteous of justice.

When the stupid man talks, contention follows; his words provoke blows.

The tongue of a stupid person is his undoing; his lips put his life in jeopardy.

A gossip's whispers are tasty morsels swallowed right down.

The lazy worker is own brother to the man who enjoys destruction.

The name of the LORD is a tower of strength, where the righteous may run for refuge.

The wealth of someone who is rich is his strong city; he thinks it an unscalable wall.

Before disaster comes one may be proud; before honour comes one must be humble.

To answer a question before you have heard it out is both stupid and insulting.

A person's spirit sustains in sickness, but who can endure if the spirit is crushed?

Knowledge comes to the discerning mind; the wise ear listens to get knowledge.

A gift opens the door to the giver and gains access to the great.

In a lawsuit the first speaker seems right, until another comes forward to cross-examine him.

Cast lots, and settle a quarrel, and so keep litigants apart.

A reluctant brother is more unyielding than a fortress, and quarrels are as stubborn as the bars of a fortress.

Someone may live by the fruit of his tongue; his lips may earn him a livelihood.

The tongue has power of life and death; make friends with it and enjoy its fruits.

He who finds a wife finds a good thing; he has won favour from the LORD.

The poor speak in a tone of entreaty; the rich give a harsh answer.

Some companions are good only for idle talk, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
