1ISRAEL set out with all that he had and came to Beersheba, where he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.
2God called to Israel in a vision by night, “Jacob! Jacob!” and he answered, “I am here.”
3God said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I shall make you a great nation.
4I shall go down to Egypt with you, and I myself shall bring you back again without fail; and Joseph's will be the hands that close your eyes.”
5So Jacob set out from Beersheba. Israel's sons conveyed their father Jacob along with their wives and children in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to bring him.
6They took their herds and the goods they had acquired in Canaan and came to Egypt, Jacob and all his family with him;
7his sons and their sons, his daughters and his sons' daughters, he brought them all to Egypt.
8These are the names of the Israelites, Jacob and his sons, who entered Egypt: Reuben, Jacob's eldest son,
9and the sons of Reuben: Enoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
10The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Saul, who was the son of a Canaanite woman.
11The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
12The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah; of these Er and Onan died in Canaan. The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
13The sons of Issachar: Tola, Pua, Iob, and Shimron.
14The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.
15These are the sons of Leah whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan-aram, and there was also his daughter Dinah. His sons and daughters numbered thirty-three in all.
16The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.
17The sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, and their sister Serah. The sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel.
18These are the descendants of Zilpah whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah, sixteen in all, born to Jacob.
19The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
20Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph in Egypt; Asenath daughter of Potiphera priest of On bore them to him.
21The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, and Ashbel; and the sons of Bela: Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.
22These are the descendants of Rachel, fourteen in all, born to Jacob.
23The son of Dan: Hushim.
24The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.
25These are the descendants of Bilhah whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel, seven in all, born to Jacob.
26All the persons who came to Egypt with Jacob, his direct descendants, not including the wives of his sons, were sixty-six in all.
27Two sons were born to Joseph in Egypt. Thus the whole house of Jacob numbered seventy when it entered Egypt.
28Jacob sent Judah ahead to Joseph to advise him that he was on his way to Goshen. They entered Goshen,
29and Joseph had his chariot yoked to go up there to meet Israel his father. When they met, Joseph threw his arms round him and wept on his shoulder for a long time.
30Israel said to Joseph, “I have seen for myself that you are still alive. Now I am ready to die.”
31Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's household, “I shall go up and inform Pharaoh; I shall tell him, ‘My brothers and my father's household who were in Canaan have come to me.
32The men are shepherds with their own flocks and herds, and they have brought with them these flocks and herds and everything they possess.’
33So when Pharaoh summons you and asks what your occupation is,
34you must answer, ‘My lord, we have herded flocks all our lives, as our fathers did before us.’ You must say this if you are to settle in Goshen, because shepherds are regarded as unclean by Egyptians.”
