Isaiah and King Ahaz

WHEN Ahaz son of Jotham and grandson of Uzziah was ruler of Judah, King Rezin of Aram with Pekah son of Remaliah, king of Israel, marched on Jerusalem, but was unable to reduce it.

When it was reported to the house of David that the Aramaeans had made an alliance with the Ephraimites, king and people shook like forest trees shaking in the wind.

The LORD said to Isaiah, “Go out with your son Shear-jashub to meet Ahaz at the end of the conduit of the Upper Pool by the causeway leading to the Fuller's Field,

and say to him: Remain calm and unafraid; do not let your nerve fail because of the blazing anger of Rezin with his Aramaeans and Remaliah's son, those two smouldering stumps of firewood.

The Aramaeans with Ephraim and Remaliah's son have plotted against you:

‘Let us invade Judah and break her spirit,’ they said; ‘let us bring her over to our side, and set Tabeal's son on the throne.’

The Lord GOD has said: This shall not happen now or ever,

that the rule in Aram should belong to Damascus, the rule in Damascus to Rezin, or that the rule in Ephraim should belong to Samaria, and the rule in Samaria to Remaliah's son. (Within sixty-five years a shattered Ephraim shall cease to be a nation.) Have firm faith, or you will fail to stand firm.”

(7:8)

The LORD spoke further to Ahaz.

“Ask the LORD your God for a sign,” he said, “whether from Sheol below or from heaven above.”

But Ahaz replied: “No, I will not put the LORD to the test by asking for a sign.”

Then the prophet said: “Listen, you house of David. Not content with wearing out the patience of men, must you also wear out the patience of my God?

Because you do, the Lord of his own accord will give you a sign; it is this: A young woman is with child, and she will give birth to a son and call him Immanuel.

By the time he has learnt to reject what is bad and choose what is good, he will be eating curds and honey;

before that child has learnt to reject evil and choose good, the territories of those two kings before whom you now cringe in fear will lie desolate.

The LORD will bring on you, on your people, and on your father's house, a time the like of which has not been seen since Ephraim broke away from Judah.

“On that day the LORD will whistle up flies from the distant streams of Egypt and bees from the land of Assyria.

They will all come and settle in the steep wadis and in the clefts of the rock, swarming over the camel-thorn and stinkwort.

On that day the Lord will shave the head and body with a razor hired on the banks of the Euphrates, and it will remove the beard as well.

On that day a man will keep a young cow and two ewes,

and he will get so much milk that he eats curds; all who are left in the land will eat curds and honey.

On that day every place where there used to be a thousand vines worth a thousand pieces of silver will be given over to briars and thorns.

A man will go there only to hunt with bow and arrows, for briars and thorns will cover the whole land.

Daunted by the briars and thorns, no one will set foot on any of those hills once under the hoe. They will become a place where oxen are turned loose and sheep and goats can wander.”
