[VER] : [PHILLIPS]     [PL]  [PB]
 <<  Lukas 3 >>

IN the fifteenth year of the reign of the Emperor Tiberius (a year when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, Philip, his brother, tetrarch of the territory of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

while Annas and Caiaphas were the High Priests), the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, while he was in the desert.

He went into the whole country round about the Jordan proclaiming baptism as a mark of a complete change of heart and of the forgiveness of sins,

as the book of the prophet Isaiah saysThe voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.

Every valley shall be filled, And every mountain and hill shall be brought low: And the crooked shall become straight, And the rough ways smooth:

And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

So John used to say to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, "Who warned you, you serpent's brood, to escape from the wrath to come?

See that your lives prove that your hearts are really changed! Don't start thinking that you can say to yourselves, 'We are Abraham's children',for I tell you that God could produce children of Abraham out of these stones!

The axe already lies at the root of the tree, and the tree that fails to produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

Then the crowds would ask him, "Then what shall we do?"

And his answer was, "The man who has two shirts must share with the man who has none, and the man who has food must do the same."

Some of the taxcollectors also came to him to be baptized and they asked him, "Master, what are we to do?"

"You must not demand more than you are entitled to," he replied.

And the soldiers asked him, "And what are we to do?" "Don't bully people, don't bring false charges, and be content with your pay," he replied.

The people were in a great stare of expectation and were all inwardly debating whether John could possibly be Christ.

But John answered them all in these words, "It is true that I baptize you with water, but the one who follows me is stronger than I amindeed I am not fit to undo his shoelaceshe will baptize you with the fire of the Holy Spirit.

He will come all ready to separate the wheat from the chaff, and to clear the rubbish from his threshingfloor. The wheat he will gather into his barn and the chaff he will burn with a fire that cannot be put out."

These and many other things John said to the people as he exhorted them and announced the good news.

But the tetrarch Herod, who had been condemned by John in the affair of Herodias, his brother's wife, as well as for the other evil things that he had done,

crowned his misdeeds by putting john in prison.

When all the people had been baptized, and Jesus was praying after his own baptism, Heaven opened

and the Holy Spirit came down upon him in the bodily form of a dove. Then there came a voice from Heaven, saying, "You are my dearlyloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

Jesus himself was about thirty years old at this time when he began his work. People assumed that Jesus was the son of Joseph, who was the son of Heli,

who was the son of Matthat, who was the son of Levi, who was the son of Melchi, who was the son of Jannai, who was the son of Joseph,

who was the son of Mattathias, who was the son of Amos, who was the son of Nahum, who was the son of Esli, who was the son of Naggai,

who was the son of Melchi, who was the son of Addi, who was the son of Cosam, who was the son of Elmadam, who was the son of Er,

who was the son of Jesus, who was the son of Eliezer, who was the son of Jorim, who was the son of Matthat, who was the son of Levi,

who was the son of Symeon, who was the son of Judas, who was the son of Joseph, who was the son of Jonam, who was the son of Eliakim,

who was the son of Melea, who was the son of Menna, who was the son of Mattatha, who was the son of Nathan, who was the son of David,

who was the son of Jesse, who was the son of Obed, who was the son of Nahshon,

who was the son of Amminadab, who was the son of Arni, who was the son of Hezron, who was the son of Perez, who was the son of Judah,

who was the son of Jacob, who was the son of Isaac, who was the son of Abraham, who was the son of Terah, who was the son of Nahor,

who was the son of Serug, who was the son of Reu, who was the son of Peleg, who was the son of Eber, who was the son of Shelah,

who was the son of Cainan, who was the son of Arphaxad, who was the son of Shem, who was the son of Noah, who was the son of Lamech,

who was the son of Methuselah, who was the son of Enoch, who was the son of Jared, who was the son of Mahalaleel, who was the son of Cainan,

who was the son of Enos, who was the son of Seth, who was the son of Adam, who was the son of God.
