 <<  Amsal 17 >>

Better a dry crust and amity with it than a feast in a house full of strife.

Where the son is a wastrel, a prudent slave is master, and shares the inheritance with the brothers.

The smelting pot for silver, the crucible for gold, but the LORD it is who assays the heart.

A rogue gives a ready ear to mischievous talk, and a liar listens to slander.

To sneer at the poor is to insult the Creator, and whoever gloats over another's misfortune will answer for it.

Grandchildren are the crown of old age, and parents are the pride of their children.

Fine talk is out of place in a boor, how much more are false words from a noble character!

A bribe works like a charm for him who offers it; wherever he turns he will prosper.

One who covers up another's offence seeks his goodwill, but one who betrays a confidence disrupts a friendship.

A reproof makes more impression on a discerning person than a hundred blows on one who is stupid.

An evil person is set only on rebellion, so a messenger without mercy will be sent against him.

Better face a she-bear robbed of her cubs than a fool in his folly.

If anyone repays evil for good, evil will never depart from his house.

Stealing water starts a quarrel; abandon a dispute before you come to blows.

To acquit the guilty and to condemn the innocent -- both are abominable to the LORD.

What use is money in the hands of a fool? Can he buy wisdom if he has no sense?

A friend shows his friendship at all times, and a brother is born to share troubles.

Whoever gives a guarantee is without sense; as surety he surrenders himself to another.

One who likes giving offence likes strife. One who builds a lofty entrance invites disaster.

A crooked heart will come to no good, and a mischievous tongue will end in calamity.

Stupid offspring bring sorrow to parents, and no father has joy of a boorish son.

A glad heart makes for good health, but low spirits sap one's strength.

A wicked person produces a bribe from under his cloak to pervert the course of justice.

Wisdom is never out of sight of those who are discerning, but the stupid have their eyes on the ends of the earth.

A stupid son exasperates his father and is a heartache to the mother who bore him.

To punish the innocent is not right, and it is wrong to inflict blows on those of noble mind.

Experience uses few words; discernment keeps a cool head.

Even a fool, if he keeps his mouth shut, will seem wise; if he holds his tongue, he will seem intelligent.
