 <<  Amsal 24 >>

Do not emulate the wicked or desire their friendship;

for violence is all they think of, and mischief is ever on their lips.

Wisdom builds the house, good judgement makes it secure,

knowledge fills the rooms with costly and pleasing furnishings.

Wisdom prevails over strength, knowledge over brute force;

for wars are won by skilful strategy, and victory is the fruit of detailed planning.

Wisdom is too lofty for a fool to grasp; he remains tongue-tied in the public assembly.

Whoever is bent on mischief gets a name for intrigue;

the intrigues of the foolish misfire, and the insolent are odious to their fellows.

If you have shown yourself weak at a time of crisis, how limited is your strength!

Rescue those being dragged away to death, and save those being hauled off to execution.

If you say, “But this person I do not know,” God, who fixes a standard for the heart, will take note; he who watches you will know; he will repay everyone according to what he does.

Eat honey, my son, for it is good, and the honeycomb is sweet to your palate.

Seek wisdom for yourself; if you find it, you may look forward to the future, and your thread of life will not be cut short.

Do not lie in wait like a felon at the upright person's house, or raid his homestead.

Though he may fall seven times, he is soon up again, but the rogue is brought headlong by misfortune.

Do not rejoice at the fall of your enemy; do not gloat when he is brought down,

or the LORD will be displeased at the sight, and will cease to be angry with him.

Do not vie with evildoers or emulate the wicked;

for those who are evil can expect no future; their lamp will be extinguished.

My son, fear the LORD and fear the king. Have nothing to do with persons of high rank;

they will come to sudden disaster, and who knows what their ruin will entail?

More sayings of the wise: Partiality in dispensing justice is invidious.

A judge who pronounces the guilty innocent is cursed by nations, and peoples denounce him;

but it will go well with those who convict the guilty, and they will be blessed with prosperity.

A straightforward answer is as good as a kiss of friendship.

Put in order your work out of doors and make everything ready on the land; after that build yourself a home.

Do not testify against your neighbour without good reason or misrepresent him in your evidence.

Do not say, “I shall do to him as he has done to me; I am paying off an old score.”

I passed by the field of an idle fellow, by the vineyard of someone with no sense.

I looked, and it was all overgrown with thistles; it was covered with weeds, and its stone wall was broken down.

I saw and I took it to heart, I considered and learnt the lesson:

a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands in rest --

and poverty will come on you like a footpad, want will assail you like a hardened ruffian.
