First cycle of speeches

1THEN Eliphaz the Temanite spoke up:

2If one should venture a word with you, would you lose patience? Yet who could curb his tongue any longer?

3Think how you once encouraged many, how you braced feeble arms,

4how a word from you upheld those who stumbled and put strength into failing knees.

5But now adversity comes on you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed.

6Does your piety give you no assurance? Does your blameless life afford you no hope?

7For consider, has any innocent person ever perished? Where have the upright ever been destroyed?

8This is what I have seen: those who plough mischief and sow trouble reap no other harvest.

9They perish at the blast of God; they are shrivelled by the breath of his nostrils.

10The roar of the lion, the whimpering of his cubs, fall silent; the teeth of the young lions are broken;

11the lion perishes for lack of prey and the whelps of the lioness are abandoned.

12A word came to me stealthily, so that my ear caught a mere whisper of it.

13In the anxious visions of the night when everyone sinks into deepest sleep,

14terror seized me and shuddering; it made my whole frame tremble with fear.

15A wind brushed across my face and made the hairs of my body stand on end.

16A figure halted there, whose shape I could not discern, an apparition loomed before me, and I heard a voice murmur:

17“Can a human being be righteous before God, a mere mortal pure before his Maker?

18If God mistrusts his own servants and finds his messengers at fault,

19how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, which can be crushed like a bird's nest,

20torn down between dawn and dusk. How much more shall they perish unheeded for ever,

21die without ever finding wisdom!”
