John the Baptist and Jesus
1IN the course of time John the Baptist appeared in the Judaean wilderness, proclaiming this message:
2“Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is upon you!”
3It was of him that the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, A voice cries in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord; clear a straight path for him.”
4John's clothing was a rough coat of camel's hair, with a leather belt round his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5Everyone flocked to him from Jerusalem, Judaea, and the Jordan valley,
6and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
7When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism he said to them: “Vipers” brood! Who warned you to escape from the wrath that is to come?
8Prove your repentance by the fruit you bear;
9and do not imagine you can say, ‘We have Abraham for our father.’ I tell you that God can make children for Abraham out of these stones.
10The axe lies ready at the roots of the trees; every tree that fails to produce good fruit is cut down and thrown on the fire.
11I baptize you with water, for repentance; but the one who comes after me is mightier than I am, whose sandals I am not worthy to remove. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
12His winnowing-shovel is ready in his hand and he will clear his threshing-floor; he will gather the wheat into his granary, but the chaff he will burn on a fire that can never be put out.'
13Then Jesus arrived at the Jordan from Galilee, and came to John to be baptized by him.
14John tried to dissuade him. “Do you come to me?” he said. “It is I who need to be baptized by you.”
15Jesus replied, “Let it be so for the present; it is right for us to do all that God requires.” Then John allowed him to come.
16No sooner had Jesus been baptized and come up out of the water than the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove to alight on him.
17And there came a voice from heaven saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I take delight.”
