A prayer: for the afflicted one when he is faint and pours out his complaint before the LORD LORD, hear my prayer and let my cry for help come to you.

Do not hide your face from me when I am in dire straits. Listen to my prayer and, when I call, be swift to reply;

for my days vanish like smoke, my body is burnt up as in an oven.

I am stricken, withered like grass; I neglect to eat my food.

I groan aloud; I am just skin and bone.

I am like a desert-owl in the wilderness, like an owl that lives among ruins.

I lie awake and have become like a bird solitary on a rooftop.

My enemies taunt me the whole day long; mad with rage, they conspire against me.

I have eaten ashes for bread and mingled tears with my drink.

In furious anger you have taken me up only to fling me aside.

My days decline like shadows lengthening; I wither away like grass.

But you, LORD, are enthroned for ever; your fame will endure to all generations.

You will arise and have mercy on Zion, for it is time to pity her; the appointed time has come.

Her very stones are dear to your servants, and even her dust moves them to pity.

The nations will revere your name, LORD, and all earthly kings your glory,

when the LORD builds Zion again and shows himself in his glory,

when he turns to hear the prayer of the destitute and does not spurn their prayer.

This will be written down for future generations, that people yet unborn may praise the LORD:

“The LORD looks down from his sanctuary on high; from heaven he surveys the earth

to hear the groaning of the prisoners and set free those under sentence of death.”

So shall the LORD's name be declared in Zion and his praise told in Jerusalem,

when peoples are assembled together, and kingdoms, to serve the LORD.

He has broken my strength before my course is run; he has cut short the time allotted me.

I say, “Do not carry me off before half my days are done, for your years extend through all generations.”

Long ago you laid earth's foundations, and the heavens were your handiwork.

They will pass away, but you remain; like clothes they will all wear out; you will cast them off like a cloak and they will vanish.

But you are the same and your years will have no end.

The children of those who serve you will continue, and their descendants will be established in your presence.
