GIVE thanks to the LORD, invoke him by name; make known his deeds among the peoples.

Pay him honour with song and psalm and tell of all his marvellous deeds.

Exult in his hallowed name; let those who seek the LORD be joyful in heart.

Look to the LORD and be strong; at all times seek his presence.

You offspring of Abraham his servant, the children of Jacob, his chosen ones, remember the marvels he has wrought, his portents, and the judgements he has given.

(105:5)

He is the LORD our God; his judgements cover the whole world.

He is ever mindful of his covenant, the promise he ordained for a thousand generations,

the covenant made with Abraham, his oath given to Isaac,

and confirmed as a statute for Jacob, as an everlasting covenant for Israel:

“I shall give you the land of Canaan”, he said, “as your allotted holding.”

A small company it was, few in number, strangers in that land,

roaming from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another;

but he let no one oppress them; on their account he rebuked kings:

“Do not touch my anointed servants,” he said; “do no harm to my prophets.”

He called down famine on the land and cut off their daily bread.

But he had sent on a man before them, Joseph, who was sold into slavery,

where they thrust his feet into fetters and clamped an iron collar round his neck.

He was tested by the LORD's command until what he foretold took place.

The king sent and had him released, the ruler of peoples set him free

and made him master of his household, ruler over all his possessions,

to correct his officers as he saw fit and teach his counsellors wisdom.

Then Israel too went down into Egypt, Jacob came to live in the land of Ham.

There God made his people very fruitful, too numerous for their enemies,

whose hearts he turned to hatred of his people, to double-dealing with his servants.

He sent his servant Moses and Aaron whom he had chosen.

They were appointed to announce his signs, his portents in the land of Ham.

He sent darkness, and all was dark, but still the Egyptians resisted his commands.

He turned all the water to blood, so causing the fish to die.

Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the royal apartments.

At his command there came swarms of flies and maggots throughout their land.

He sent showers of hail, and lightning flashing over their country.

He blasted their vines and their fig trees and shattered the trees throughout their territory.

At his command the locusts came, hoppers past all numbering;

they devoured every green thing in the land, eating up all the produce of the soil.

Then he struck down all the firstborn in the land, the firstfruits of all their manhood.

He led his people out, laden with silver and gold, and among all their tribes not one person fell.

The Egyptians were glad to see them go, for fear of Israel had seized them.

He spread a cloud as a screen for them, and fire to light up the night.

When they asked, he sent them quails; he gave them bread of heaven in plenty.

He opened a rock and water gushed out, flowing in a stream through a parched land;

for he was mindful of his solemn promise to his servant Abraham.

He led out his people rejoicing, his chosen ones in triumph.

He gave them the lands of heathen nations; they took possession where others had toiled,

so that they might keep his statutes and obey his laws. Praise the LORD.
