1A psalm: for David: for commemoration LORD, do not rebuke me in anger or punish me in your wrath.

2For your arrows have rained down on me, and your hand on me has been heavy.

3Your indignation has left no part of my body unscathed; because of my sin there is no health in my whole frame.

4For my iniquities tower above my head; they are a heavier load than I can bear.

5My wounds fester and stink because of my folly.

6I am bowed down and utterly prostrate. All day long I go about as if in mourning,

7for my loins burn with fever, and there is no wholesome flesh in me.

8Faint and badly crushed I groan aloud in anguish of heart.

9All my longing lies open before you, Lord, and my sighing is no secret to you.

10My heart throbs, my strength is spent, and the light has faded from my eyes.

11My friends and companions shun me in my sickness, and my kinsfolk keep far off.

12Those who seek my life set their traps, those who mean to injure me threaten my destruction; they plot all the day long.

13But I am like a deaf man, hearing nothing, like a dumb man who cannot open his mouth.

14I behave like one who does not hear, whose tongue offers no defence.

15On you, LORD, I fix my hope; you, LORD my God, will answer.

16I said, “Let them never rejoice over me who exult when my foot slips.”

17I am on the brink of disaster, and pain is constantly with me.

18I make no secret of my iniquity; I am troubled because of my sin.

19But many are my enemies, all without cause, and numerous are those who hate me without reason,

20who repay good with evil, opposing me because my purpose is good.

21But, LORD, do not forsake me; my God, be not far aloof from me.

22Lord my deliverer, hasten to my aid.
