1Damascus: an oracle. Damascus will cease to be a city; she will be reduced to a heap of ruins
2for ever desolate. Flocks will have her for their own and lie there undisturbed.
3No longer will Ephraim boast a fortified city, or Damascus a kingdom; the remnant of Aram will share the fate of Israel's glory. This is the word of the LORD of Hosts.
4On that day Jacob's glory will wane and his prosperity waste away,
5as when the reaper gathers the standing grain, harvesting the ears by armfuls, or as when one gleans the ears in the vale of Rephaim,
6or as when an olive tree is beaten and only gleanings are left on it, two or three berries on the topmost branch, four or five on its fruitful boughs. This is the word of the LORD the God of Israel.
7On that day all will look to their Maker, turning their eyes to the Holy One of Israel;
8they will not look to the altars, their own handiwork, or to objects their fingers have made, sacred poles and incense-altars.
9On that day your strong cities will be deserted like the deserted cities of the Hivites and the Amorites, which they abandoned at Israel's approach, and they will become desolate.
10You forgot the God who delivered you, and did not keep in mind the rock, your stronghold. Plant then, if you will, your gardens in honour of Adonis, set out your cuttings for a foreign god;
11though you protect them on the day you plant them, and though your seeds sprout next morning, yet the crop will disappear when wasting disease comes in a day of incurable pain.
12Listen! It is the thunder of vast forces, a thundering like the thunder of the sea. Listen! It is the roar of nations, a roaring like the roar of mighty waters.
13At his rebuke, they flee far away, driven before the wind like chaff on the hills, like thistledown before the storm.
14At evening all is terror; before morning it is gone. Such is the fate of our plunderers, the lot of those who despoil us.
