For David STRIVE against those who strive against me, LORD; fight those who fight against me.

Grasp shield and buckler, and rise to my aid.

Brandish spear and axe against my pursuers. Let me hear you declare, “I am your salvation.”

May shame and disgrace cover those who seek my life; may those who plan my downfall retreat in dismay!

May they be like chaff before the wind, driven away by the angel of the LORD!

Let their path be dark and slippery with the angel of the LORD pursuing them!

For unprovoked they have hidden a net to catch me, unprovoked they have dug a pit to trap me.

May destruction unforeseen come upon them; may the net which they hid catch them; may they fall into the pit and be destroyed!

Then I shall rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation.

My whole frame cries out, “LORD, who is there like you, saviour of the oppressed from those too strong for them, of the oppressed and poor from those who prey on them?”

Malicious witnesses come forward and question me on matters of which I know nothing.

They return me evil for good, lying in wait to take my life.

Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth, I mortified myself with fasting. When my prayer came back unanswered,

I walked with head bowed in grief as if for a brother; as one in sorrow for his mother I lay prostrate in mourning.

But when I stumbled, they crowded round rejoicing, they crowded about me; unknown assailants jeered at me and nothing would stop them.

When I slipped, they mocked and derided me, grinding their teeth at me.

Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue me from those who would destroy me, save my precious life from the powerful.

Then I shall praise you in the great assembly, I shall extol you in a large congregation.

Let no treacherous enemy gloat over me; let not those who hate me for no reason leer at me.

Their words are hostile and against the peaceful they hatch intrigues.

They open their mouths and shout at me: “Hurrah! What a sight for us to see!”

You have seen all this, LORD; do not keep silence. Lord, be not far aloof from me.

Awake, rouse yourself, my God, my Lord, to vindicate me and plead my cause.

Judge me, LORD my God, as you are righteous; do not let them gloat over me.

Do not let them say to themselves, “Hurrah! We have got our wish, we have swallowed him up!”

Let all who rejoice at my downfall be discomfited and dismayed; let those who glory over me be covered with shame and dishonour.

But let all who want to see me vindicated shout for joy, let them cry continually, “All glory to the LORD who wants to see his servant prosper!”

And I shall declare your saving power and your praise all the day long.
