2For like the grass they soon wither, and like green pasture they fade away.
3Trust in the LORD and do good; settle in the land and find safe pasture.
4Delight in the LORD, and he will grant you your heart's desire.
5Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.
6He will make your righteousness shine clear as the day and the justice of your cause like the brightness of noon.
7Wait quietly for the LORD, be patient till he comes; do not envy those who gain their ends, or be vexed at their success.
8Be angry no more, have done with wrath; do not be vexed: that leads to evil.
9For evildoers will be destroyed, while they who hope in the LORD will possess the land.
10A little while, and the wicked will be no more; however hard you look, you will find their place empty.
11But the humble will possess the land and enjoy untold prosperity.
12The wicked plot against the righteous and grind their teeth at the sight of them.
13The Lord will laugh at the wicked, for he sees that their day of judgement is coming.
14They have drawn their swords and strung their bows to lay low the oppressed and poor, and to slaughter those who are honest.
15Their swords will pierce their own hearts and their bows will be shattered.
16Better is the little which the righteous person has than all the wealth of the wicked;
17for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous.
18The LORD watches over the upright all their days, and their inheritance will last for ever.
19When times are bad, they will not be distressed, and in a period of famine they will have enough.
20But the wicked will perish; the enemies of the LORD, like fuel in a furnace, will go up in smoke.
21The wicked borrow and do not repay; the righteous give generously.
22Those whom the LORD has blessed will possess the land, and those who are cursed by him will be cut off.
23It is the LORD who directs a person's steps; he holds him firm and approves of his conduct.
24Though he may fall, he will not go headlong, for the LORD grasps him by the hand.
25I have been young and now have grown old, but never have I seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
26Day in, day out, such a one lends generously, and his children become a blessing.
27If you shun evil and do good, you will live at peace for ever;
28for the LORD is a lover of justice and will not forsake his loyal servants. The lawless are banished for ever and the children of the wicked cut off,
29while the righteous will possess the land and live there for ever.
30A righteous person speaks words of wisdom and justice is always on his lips.
31The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not falter.
32The wicked watch out for the righteous and seek to put them to death;
33but the LORD will not leave them in their power, nor let them be condemned if they are brought to trial.
34Wait for the LORD and hold to his way; he will raise you to be master of the land. When the wicked are destroyed, you will be there to watch.
35I have seen a wicked man inspiring terror, flourishing as a spreading tree in its native soil.
36But one day I passed by and he was gone; for all that I searched for him, he was not to be found.
37Observe the good man, watch him who is honest, for the man of peace leaves descendants;
38but transgressors are wiped out one and all, and the descendants of the wicked are cut off.
39Deliverance for the righteous comes from the LORD, their refuge in time of trouble.
40The LORD will help them and deliver them, he will keep them safe from the wicked; he will save them because they seek shelter in him.
