A maskil: for Ethan the Ezrahite I SHALL sing always of the loving deeds of the LORD; throughout every generation I shall proclaim your faithfulness.

I said: Your love will stand firm for ever; in the heavens you have established your faithfulness.

I have made a covenant with the one I have chosen, I have sworn on oath to my servant David:

“I shall establish your line for ever, I shall make your throne endure for all generations.” [Selah]

Let the heavens praise your wonders, LORD; let the assembly of the angels exalt your faithfulness.

In the skies who is there like the LORD, who like the LORD in the court of heaven,

a God dreaded in the council of the angels, great and terrible above all who stand about him?

LORD God of Hosts, who is like you? Your strength and faithfulness, LORD, are all around you.

You rule the raging of the sea, calming the turmoil of its waves.

You crushed and slew the monster Rahab and scattered your enemies with your strong arm.

The heavens are yours, the earth yours also; you founded the world and all that is in it.

You created the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon echo your name.

Strength of arm and valour are yours; your hand is mighty, your right hand lifted high;

your throne is founded on righteousness and justice; love and faithfulness are in attendance on you.

Happy the people who have learnt to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your countenance, LORD!

In your name they rejoice all day long; your righteousness will lift them up.

You are yourself the strength in which they glory; through your favour we hold our heads high.

To the LORD belongs our shield, to the Holy One of Israel our king.

A time came when you spoke in a vision, declaring to your faithful servant: I have granted help to a warrior; I have exalted one chosen from the people.

I have found David my servant and anointed him with my sacred oil.

My hand will be ready to help him, my arm to give him strength.

No enemy will outwit him, no wicked person will oppress him;

I shall crush his adversaries before him and strike down those who are hostile to him.

My faithfulness and love will be with him and through my name he will hold his head high.

I shall establish his rule over the sea, his dominion over the rivers.

He will call to me, “You are my father, my God, my rock where I find safety.”

I shall give him the rank of firstborn, highest among the kings of the earth.

I shall maintain my love for him for ever and be faithful in my covenant with him.

I shall establish his line for ever and his throne as long as the heavens endure.

If his children forsake my law and do not conform to my judgements,

if they violate my statutes and do not observe my commandments,

then I shall punish their disobedience with the rod, their iniquity with lashes.

Yet I shall not deprive him of my love, nor swerve from my faithfulness;

I shall not violate my covenant, nor alter what I have promised.

I have sworn by my holiness once and for all, I shall not break my word to David:

his posterity will continue for ever, his throne before me like the sun;

like the moon it will endure for ever, a faithful witness in the sky. [Selah]

Yet you have spurned your anointed one, you have rejected him and raged against him,

you have renounced the covenant with your servant, defiled his crown and flung it to the ground.

You have breached all his walls and laid his fortresses in ruins;

every passer-by plunders him, and he suffers his neighbours' taunts.

You have increased the power of his adversaries and brought joy to all his foes;

you have driven back his drawn sword and left him without support in battle.

You have put an end to his splendour and hurled his throne to the ground;

you have cut short the days of his youth and covered him as with a cloak of shame. [Selah]

How long, LORD, will you hide yourself from sight? How long will your wrath blaze like a fire?

Remember how fleeting is our life! Have you created all mankind to no purpose?

Who can live and not see death? Who can save himself from the power of Sheol? [Selah]

Where are your former loving deeds, Lord, which you promised faithfully to David?

Remember, Lord, the taunts hurled at your servant, how I have borne in my heart the calumnies of the nations;

for your enemies have taunted us, LORD, taunted your anointed king at every step.

Blessed be the LORD for ever. Amen and Amen.
