1Now Moab<4124> rebelled<6586> against Israel<3478> after<310> the death<4194> of Ahab<256>.
2And Ahaziah<274> fell<5307> through<1157> the lattice<7639> in his upper<5944> chamber<5944> which<834> was in Samaria<8111>, and became<2470> ill<2470>. So he sent<7971> messengers<4397> and said<559> to them, "Go<1980>, inquire<1875> of Baal-zebub<1176>, the god<430> of Ekron<6138>, whether<518> I will recover<2421> from this<2088> sickness<2483>."
3But the angel<4397> of the LORD<3068> said<1696> to Elijah<452> the Tishbite<8664>, "Arise<6965>, go<5927> up to meet<7122> the messengers<4397> of the king<4428> of Samaria<8111> and say<1696> to them, 'Is it because<4480><1097> there<369> is no<369> God<430> in Israel<3478> that you are going<1980> to inquire<1875> of Baal-zebub<1176>, the god<430> of Ekron<6138>?'
4"Now therefore<3651> thus<3541> says<559> the LORD<3068>, 'You shall not come<3381> down<3381> from the bed<4296> where<834><8033> you have gone<5927> up, but you shall surely<4191> die<4191>.'" Then Elijah<452> departed<1980>.
5When the messengers<4397> returned<7725> to him he said<559> to them, "Why<4100> have you returned<7725>?"
6They said<559> to him, "A man<376> came<5927> up to meet<7122> us and said<559> to us, 'Go<1980>, return<7725> to the king<4428> who<834> sent<7971> you and say<1696> to him, "Thus<3541> says<559> the LORD<3068>, 'Is it because<4480><1097> there<369> is no<369> God<430> in Israel<3478> that you are sending<7971> to inquire<1875> of Baal-zebub<1176>, the god<430> of Ekron<6138>? Therefore<3651> you shall not come<3381> down<3381> from the bed<4296> where<834><8033> you have gone<5927> up, but shall surely<4191> die<4191>.'"'"
7He said<1696> to them, "What<4100> kind<4941> of man<376> was he who<834> came<5927> up to meet<7122> you and spoke<1696> these<428> words<1697> to you?"
8They answered<559> him, "He was a hairy<8181> man<376> with a leather<5785> girdle<232> bound<247> about his loins<4975>." And he said<559>, "It is Elijah<452> the Tishbite<8664>."
9Then the king sent<7971> to him a captain<8269> of fifty<2572> with his fifty<2572>. And he went<5927> up to him, and behold<2009>, he was sitting<3427> on the top<7218> of the hill<2022>. And he said<1696> to him, "O man<376> of God<430>, the king<4428> says<1696>, 'Come<3381> down<3381>.'"
10Elijah<452> replied<6030> to the captain<8269> of fifty<2572>, "If<518> I am a man<376> of God<430>, let fire<784> come<3381> down<3381> from heaven<8064> and consume<398> you and your fifty<2572>." Then fire<784> came<3381> down<3381> from heaven<8064> and consumed<398> him and his fifty<2572>.
11So he again<7725> sent<7971> to him another<312> captain<8269> of fifty<2572> with his fifty<2572>. And he said<1696> to him, "O man<376> of God<430>, thus<3541> says<559> the king<4428>, 'Come<3381> down<3381> quickly<4120>.'"
12Elijah<452> replied<6030> to them, "If<518> I am a man<376> of God<430>, let fire<784> come<3381> down<3381> from heaven<8064> and consume<398> you and your fifty<2572>." Then the fire<784> of God<430> came<3381> down<3381> from heaven<8064> and consumed<398> him and his fifty<2572>.
13So he again<7725> sent<7971> the captain<8269> of a third<7992> fifty<2572> with his fifty<2572>. When the third<7992> captain<8269> of fifty<2572> went<5927> up, he came<935> and bowed<3766> down<3766> on his knees<1290> before<5048> Elijah<452>, and begged<2603> him and said<1696> to him, "O man<376> of God<430>, please<4994> let my life<5315> and the lives<5315> of these<428> fifty<2572> servants<5650> of yours be precious<3365> in your sight<5869>.
14"Behold<2009> fire<784> came<3381> down<3381> from heaven<8064> and consumed<398> the first<7223> two<8147> captains<8269> of fifty<2572> with their fifties<2572>; but now<6258> let my life<5315> be precious<3365> in your sight<5869>."
15The angel<4397> of the LORD<3068> said<1696> to Elijah<452>, "Go<3381> down<3381> with him; do not be afraid<3372> of him." So he arose<6965> and went<3381> down<3381> with him to the king<4428>.
16Then he said<1696> to him, "Thus<3541> says<559> the LORD<3068>, 'Because<3282><834> you have sent<7971> messengers<4397> to inquire<1875> of Baal-zebub<1176>, the god<430> of Ekron<6138>--is it because<4480><1097> there<369> is no<369> God<430> in Israel<3478> to inquire<1875> of His word<1697>?--therefore<3651> you shall not come<3381> down<3381> from the bed<4296> where<834><8033> you have gone<5927> up, but shall surely<4191> die<4191>.'"
17So Ahaziah died<4191> according to the word<1697> of the LORD<3068> which<834> Elijah<452> had spoken<1696>. And because<3588> he had<1961> no<3808> son<1121>, Jehoram<3088> became<4427> king<4427> in his place<8478> in the second<8147> year<8141> of Jehoram<3088> the son<1121> of Jehoshaphat<3092>, king<4428> of Judah<3063>.
18Now the rest<3499> of the acts<1697> of Ahaziah<274> which<834> he did<6213>, are they not written<3789> in the Book<5612> of the Chronicles<1697><3117> of the Kings<4428> of Israel<3478>?
