And Jacob <03290> went <01980> (8804) on his way <01870>_, and the angels <04397> of God <0430> met <06293> (8799) him.
And when Jacob <03290> saw them <07200> (8804)_, he said <0559> (8799)_, This [is] God's <0430> host <04264>_: and he called <07121> (8799) the name <08034> of that place <04725> Mahanaim <04266>_. {Mahanaim: that is, Two hosts, or, camps}
And Jacob <03290> sent <07971> (8799) messengers <04397> before him <06440> to Esau <06215> his brother <0251> unto the land <0776> of Seir <08165>_, the country <07704> of Edom <0123>_. {country: Heb. field}
And he commanded <06680> (8762) them, saying <0559> (8800)_, Thus shall ye speak <0559> (8799) unto my lord <0113> Esau <06215>_; Thy servant <05650> Jacob <03290> saith <0559> (8804) thus, I have sojourned <01481> (8804) with Laban <03837>_, and stayed there <0309> (8799) until now:
And I have oxen <07794>_, and asses <02543>_, flocks <06629>_, and menservants <05650>_, and womenservants <08198>_: and I have sent <07971> (8799) to tell <05046> (8687) my lord <0113>_, that I may find <04672> (8800) grace <02580> in thy sight <05869>_.
And the messengers <04397> returned <07725> (8799) to Jacob <03290>_, saying <0559> (8800)_, We came <0935> (8804) to thy brother <0251> Esau <06215>_, and also he cometh <01980> (8802) to meet thee <07125> (8800)_, and four hundred <03967> men <0376> with him.
Then Jacob <03290> was greatly <03966> afraid <03372> (8799) and distressed <03334> (8799)_: and he divided <02673> (8799) the people <05971> that [was] with him, and the flocks <06629>_, and herds <01241>_, and the camels <01581>_, into two <08147> bands <04264>_;
And said <0559> (8799)_, If Esau <06215> come <0935> (8799) to the one <0259> company <04264>_, and smite it <05221> (8689)_, then the other company <04264> which is left <07604> (8737) shall escape <06413>_.
And Jacob <03290> said <0559> (8799)_, O God <0430> of my father <01> Abraham <085>_, and God <0430> of my father <01> Isaac <03327>_, the LORD <03068> which saidst <0559> (8802) unto me, Return <07725> (8798) unto thy country <0776>_, and to thy kindred <04138>_, and I will deal well <03190> (8686) with thee:
I am not worthy of the least <06994> (8804) of all the mercies <02617>_, and of all the truth <0571>_, which thou hast shewed <06213> (8804) unto thy servant <05650>_; for with my staff <04731> I passed over <05674> (8804) this Jordan <03383>_; and now I am become two <08147> bands <04264>_. {I am not...: Heb. I am less than all}
Deliver me <05337> (8685)_, I pray thee, from the hand <03027> of my brother <0251>_, from the hand <03027> of Esau <06215>_: for I fear <03373> him, lest he will come <0935> (8799) and smite me <05221> (8689)_, [and] the mother <0517> with <05921> the children <01121>_. {with: Heb. upon}
And thou saidst <0559> (8804)_, I will surely <03190> (8687) do thee good <03190> (8686)_, and make <07760> (8804) thy seed <02233> as the sand <02344> of the sea <03220>_, which cannot be numbered <05608> (8735) for multitude <07230>_.
And he lodged <03885> (8799) there that same night <03915>_; and took <03947> (8799) of that which came <0935> (8802) to his hand <03027> a present <04503> for Esau <06215> his brother <0251>_;
Two hundred <03967> she goats <05795>_, and twenty <06242> he goats <08495>_, two hundred <03967> ewes <07353>_, and twenty <06242> rams <0352>_,
Thirty <07970> milch <03243> (8688) camels <01581> with their colts <01121>_, forty <0705> kine <06510>_, and ten <06235> bulls <06499>_, twenty <06242> she asses <0860>_, and ten <06235> foals <05895>_.
And he delivered <05414> (8799) [them] into the hand <03027> of his servants <05650>_, every drove <05739> by themselves; and said <0559> (8799) unto his servants <05650>_, Pass over <05674> (8798) before me <06440>_, and put <07760> (8799) a space <07305> betwixt <0996> drove <05739> and <0996> drove <05739>_.
And he commanded <06680> (8762) the foremost <07223>_, saying <0559> (8800)_, When Esau <06215> my brother <0251> meeteth thee <06298> (8799)_, and asketh thee <07592> (8804)_, saying <0559> (8800)_, Whose [art] thou? and whither goest <03212> (8799) thou? and whose [are] these before <06440> thee?
Then thou shalt say <0559> (8804)_, [They be] thy servant <05650> Jacob's <03290>_; it [is] a present <04503> sent <07971> (8803) unto my lord <0113> Esau <06215>_: and, behold, also he [is] behind us <0310>_.
And so <01571> commanded he <06680> (8762) the second <08145>_, and the third <07992>_, and all that followed <01980> (8802) <0310> the droves <05739>_, saying <0559> (8800)_, On this manner <01697> shall ye speak <01696> (8762) unto Esau <06215>_, when ye find <04672> (8800) him.
And say ye <0559> (8804) moreover <01571>_, Behold, thy servant <05650> Jacob <03290> [is] behind us <0310>_. For he said <0559> (8804)_, I will appease <03722> (8762) him <06440> with the present <04503> that goeth <01980> (8802) before me <06440>_, and afterward <0310> I will see <07200> (8799) his face <06440>_; peradventure he will accept <05375> (8799) of me <06440>_. {of me: Heb. my face}
So went <05674> (0) the present <04503> over <05674> (8799) before him <06440>_: and himself lodged <03885> (8804) that night <03915> in the company <04264>_.
And he rose up <06965> (8799) that night <03915>_, and took <03947> (8799) his two <08147> wives <0802>_, and his two <08147> womenservants <08198>_, and his eleven <06240> <0259> sons <03206>_, and passed over <05674> (8799) the ford <04569> Jabbok <02999>_.
And he took them <03947> (8799)_, and sent them over <05674> (8686) the brook <05158>_, and sent over <05674> (8686) that he had. {sent them: Heb. caused to pass}
And Jacob <03290> was left <03498> (8735) alone; and there wrestled <079> (8735) a man <0376> with him until the breaking <05927> (8800) of the day <07837>_. {breaking...: Heb. ascending of the morning}
And when he saw <07200> (8799) that he prevailed <03201> (8804) not against him, he touched <05060> (8799) the hollow of his thigh <03409>_; and the hollow <03709> of Jacob's <03290> thigh <03409> was out of joint <03363> (8799)_, as he wrestled <079> (8736) with him.
And he said <0559> (8799)_, Let me go <07971> (8761)_, for the day <07837> breaketh <05927> (8804)_. And he said <0559> (8799)_, I will not let thee go <07971> (8762)_, except <0518> thou bless <01288> (8765) me.
And he said <0559> (8799) unto him, What [is] thy name <08034>_? And he said <0559> (8799)_, Jacob <03290>_.
And he said <0559> (8799)_, Thy name <08034> shall be called <0559> (8735) no more Jacob <03290>_, but Israel <03478>_: for as a prince hast thou power <08280> (8804) with God <0430> and with men <0582>_, and hast prevailed <03201> (8799)_. {Israel: that is, A prince of God}
And Jacob <03290> asked <07592> (8799) [him], and said <0559> (8799)_, Tell <05046> (8685) [me], I pray thee, thy name <08034>_. And he said <0559> (8799)_, Wherefore [is] it <02088> [that] thou dost ask <07592> (8799) after my name <08034>_? And he blessed <01288> (8762) him there.
And Jacob <03290> called <07121> (8799) the name <08034> of the place <04725> Peniel <06439>_: for I have seen <07200> (8804) God <0430> face <06440> to face <06440>_, and my life <05315> is preserved <05337> (8735)_. {Peniel: that is, The face of God}
And as he passed over <05674> (8804) Penuel <06439> the sun <08121> rose <02224> (8799) upon him, and he halted <06760> (8802) upon his thigh <03409>_.
Therefore the children <01121> of Israel <03478> eat <0398> (8799) not [of] the sinew <01517> which shrank <05384>_, which [is] upon the hollow <03709> of the thigh <03409>_, unto this day <03117>_: because he touched <05060> (8804) the hollow <03709> of Jacob's <03290> thigh <03409> in the sinew <01517> that shrank <05384>_.
