In the eighteenth <06240> <08083> year <08141> of the reign <04428> of Jeroboam <03379> son <01121> of Nebat <05028>, Abijah <038> became king <04427> over <05921> Judah <03063>.
He ruled <04427> for three <07969> years <08141> in Jerusalem <03389>. His mother <0517> was Maacah <04601>, the daughter <01323> of Abishalom <053>.
He followed <01980> all <03605> the sinful <02403> practices <06213> of his father <01> before <06440> him. He was <01961> not <03808> wholeheartedly devoted <08003> <03824> to <05973> the Lord <03068> his God <0430>, as his ancestor <01> David <01732> had been.
Nevertheless <03588> for <04616> David’s <01732> sake <04616> the Lord <03068> his God <0430> <05414> maintained his dynasty <05216> in Jerusalem <03389> by giving <06965> him a son <01121> to succeed <0310> him and by protecting <05975> Jerusalem <03389>.
He did <06213> this because <0834> David <01732> had done what he approved <05869> <03477> and had not <03808> disregarded <05493> any <03605> of his commandments <06680> his entire <03605> lifetime <02416> <03117>, except <07535> for the incident <01697> involving Uriah <0223> the Hittite <02850>.
Rehoboam <07346> and Jeroboam <03379> were <01961> continually at war <04421> with each other <0996> throughout <03605> Abijah’s lifetime <02416> <03117>.
The rest <03499> of the events <01697> of Abijah’s <038> reign, including all <03605> his <01992> accomplishments <06213>, are recorded <03789> in <05921> the scroll <05612> called the Annals <01697> of the Kings <04428> of Judah <03063>. Abijah <038> and Jeroboam <03379> had been <01961> at <0996> war <04421> with each <0996> other.
Abijah <038> passed away <01> <05973> <07901> and was buried <06912> in the city <05892> of David <01732>. His son <01121> Asa <0609> replaced <08478> him as king <04427>.
In the twentieth <06242> year <08141> of Jeroboam’s <03379> reign over <04428> Israel <03478>, Asa <0609> became <04427> the king <04428> of Judah <03063>.
He ruled <04427> for forty-one <0705> years <08141> in Jerusalem <03389>. His grandmother <0517> was Maacah <04601> daughter <01323> of Abishalom <053>.
Asa <0609> did what the Lord <03068> approved <03477> like his ancestor <01> David <01732> had done <06213>.
He removed <05674> the male cultic prostitutes <06945> from <04480> the land <0776> and got rid of <05493> all <03605> the disgusting idols <01544> his ancestors <01> had made <06213>.
He also <01571> removed <05493> Maacah <04601> his grandmother <0517> from her position as queen <01377> because she had <0834> made <06213> a loathsome <04656> Asherah pole <0842>. Asa <0609> cut down <03772> her Asherah pole <04656> and burned <08313> it in the Kidron <06939> Valley <05158>.
The high places <01116> were not <03808> eliminated <05493>, yet <07535> Asa <0609> was <01961> wholeheartedly <03824> devoted <08003> to <05973> the Lord <03069> throughout <03605> his lifetime <03117>.
He brought <0935> the holy <06944> items that he and his father <01> had made into the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>, including the silver <03701>, gold <02091>, and other articles <03627>.
Now Asa <0609> and King <04428> Baasha <01201> of Israel <03478> were <01961> continually <03117> <03605> at war <04421> with each other <0996> <0996>.
King <04428> Baasha <01201> of Israel <03478> attacked <05927> Judah <03063> and established <01129> Ramah <07414> as a military outpost to prevent <05414> <01115> anyone from leaving <03318> or entering <0935> the land of King <04428> Asa <0609> of Judah <03063>.
Asa <0609> took <03947> all <03605> the silver <03701> and gold <02091> that was left <03498> in the treasuries <0214> of the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004> and of the royal <04428> palace <01004> and handed <03027> <05414> it to his servants <05650>. He <0609> <04428> then told them to <0413> deliver <07971> it to Ben Hadad <01130> son <01121> of Tabrimmon <02886>, the son <01121> of Hezion <02383>, king <04428> of Syria <0758>, ruler <03427> in Damascus <01834>, along with this message <0559>:
“I want to make a treaty <01285> with <0854> <0996> <0996> <0996> <0996> you, like the one our fathers <01> <01> made. See <02009>, I have sent <07971> you silver <03701> and gold <02091> as a present <07810>. Break <06565> your treaty <01285> with <0854> King <04428> Baasha <01201> of Israel <03478>, so he will retreat <05927> from my land.”
Ben Hadad <01130> accepted <08085> King <04428> Asa’s <0609> offer and ordered <07971> his army <02428> commanders <08269> to <0413> attack the cities <05892> of Israel <03478>. They conquered <05221> Ijon <05859>, Dan <01835>, Abel Beth Maacah <062>, and all <03605> the territory <0776> of Naphtali <05321>, including the region <03605> of Kinnereth <03672>.
When <01961> Baasha <01201> heard <08085> the news, he stopped <02308> fortifying <01129> Ramah <07414> and settled down <03427> in Tirzah <08656>.
King <04428> Asa <0609> ordered <08085> all <03605> the men of Judah <03063> (no <0369> exemptions <05355> were granted) to carry away <05375> the stones <068> and wood <06086> that <0834> Baasha <01201> had used to build <01129> Ramah <07414>. King <04428> Asa <0609> used the materials to build up <01129> Geba <01387> (in Benjamin <01144>) and Mizpah <04709>.
The rest <03499> of the events <01697> of Asa’s <0609> reign, including all <03605> his successes <01369> and accomplishments <06213>, as well as a record of the cities <05892> he built <01129>, are recorded <03789> in <05921> the scroll <05612> called the Annals <03117> <01697> of the Kings <04428> of Judah <03063>. Yet <07535> when <06256> he was very old <02209> he developed <02470> a foot <07272> disease <02470>.
Asa <0609> passed away <01> <05973> <07901> and was buried <06912> with <05973> his ancestors <01> in the city <05892> of his ancestor <01> David <01732>. His son <01121> Jehoshaphat <03092> replaced <08478> him as king <04427>.
In the second year <08141> of Asa’s <0609> reign over <04428> Judah <03063>, Jeroboam’s <03379> son <01121> Nadab <05070> became the king <04427> of Israel <03478>; he ruled <04427> Israel <03478> for two <08147> years <08141>.
He did <06213> evil <07451> in the sight <05869> of the Lord <03068>. He followed <01980> in his father’s <01> footsteps <01870> and encouraged <02398> Israel <03478> to sin <02398>.
Baasha <01201> son <01121> of Ahijah <0281>, from the tribe <01004> of Issachar <03485>, conspired <07194> against <05921> Nadab <01201> and assassinated <05221> him in Gibbethon <01405>, which <0834> was in Philistine <06430> territory. This happened while Nadab <05070> and all <03605> the Israelite <03478> army were besieging <06696> Gibbethon <01405>.
Baasha <01201> killed <04191> him in the third <07969> year <08141> of Asa’s <0609> reign over <04428> Judah <03063> and replaced <08478> him as king.
When <01961> he became king <04427>, he executed <05221> Jeroboam’s <03379> entire <03605> family <01004>. He wiped out <08045> everyone <03605> who breathed <05397>, just as <05704> the Lord <03068> had <0834> predicted <01696> through <03027> his servant <05650> Ahijah <0281> the Shilonite <07888>.
This happened because <05921> of the sins <02403> which <0834> Jeroboam <03379> committed <02398> and which <0834> he made Israel <03478> commit <02398>. These sins <03708> angered <03707> the Lord <03068> God <0430> of Israel <03478>.
The rest <03499> of the events <01697> of Nadab’s <05070> reign, including all <03605> his accomplishments <06213>, are recorded <03789> in <05921> the scroll <05612> called the Annals <03117> <01697> of the Kings <04428> of Israel <03478>.
Asa <0609> and <0996> King <04428> Nadab <01201> of Israel <03478> were <01961> continually <03117> <03605> at war <04421> with each other.
In the third <07969> year <08141> of Asa’s <0609> reign over <04428> Judah <03063>, Baasha <01201> son <01121> of Ahijah <0281> became king <04427> over <05921> all <03605> Israel <03478> in Tirzah <08656>; he ruled for twenty-four <0702> <06242> years <08141>.
He did <06213> evil <07451> in the sight <05869> of the Lord <03068>; he followed <01980> in Jeroboam’s <03379> footsteps <01870> and encouraged <02398> Israel <03478> to sin <02398>.
