Then the Lord <03068> answered <06030> Job <0347> out of the whirlwind <05591>:

“Who <04310> is this <02088> who darkens <02821> counsel <06098> with words <04405> without <01097> knowledge <01847>?

Get ready <0247> for a difficult task like a man <01397>; I will question <07592> you and you will inform <03045> me!

“Where <0375> were <01961> you when I laid the foundation <03245> of the earth <0776>? Tell <05046> me, if <0518> you possess <03045> understanding <0998>!

Who <04310> set <07760> its measurements <04461>– if <03588> you know <03045>– or <0176> who <04310> stretched <05186> a measuring line <06957> across it?

On <05921> what <04100> were its bases <0134> set <02883>, or <0176> who <04310> laid <03384> its cornerstone <06438> <068>–

when the morning <01242> stars <03556> sang <07442> in chorus <03162>, and all <03605> the sons <01121> of God <0430> shouted for joy <07321>?

“Who shut up <05526> the sea <03220> with doors <01817> when it burst forth <01518>, coming out <03318> of the womb <07358>,

when I made <07760> the storm clouds <06051> its garment <03830>, and thick darkness <06205> its swaddling band <02854>,

when I prescribed <07665> its limits <02706>, and set <07760> in place its bolts <01280> and doors <01817>,

when I said <0559>, ‘To <05704> here <06311> you may come <0935> and no <03808> farther <03254>, here <06311> your proud <01347> waves <01530> will be confined <07896>’?

Have you ever in <03117> your life <03117> commanded <06680> the morning <01242>, or made the dawn <07837> know <03045> its place <04725>,

that it might seize <0270> the corners <03671> of the earth <0776>, and shake <05287> the wicked <07563> out <05287> of <04480> it?

The earth takes shape <02015> like clay <02563> under a seal <02368>; its features are dyed <03320> like <03644> a garment <03830>.

Then from the wicked <07563> the light <0216> is withheld <04513>, and the arm <02220> raised <07311> in violence is broken <07665>.

Have you gone <0935> to the springs <05033> that fill the sea <03220>, or walked <01980> about in the recesses <02714> of the deep <08415>?

Have the gates <08179> of death <04194> been revealed <01540> to you? Have you seen <07200> the gates <08179> of deepest darkness <06757>?

Have you considered the vast expanses <07338> of the earth <0776>? Tell <05046> me, if <0518> you know <03045> it all <03605>!

“In what <0335> direction <01870> does light <0216> reside <07931>, and darkness <02822>, where <0335> is its place <04725>,

that <03588> you may take <03947> them to <0413> their borders <01366> and perceive <0995> the pathways <05410> to their homes <01004>?

You know <03045>, for <03588> you were born <03205> before <0227> them; and the number <04557> of your days <03117> is great <07227>!

Have you entered <0935> the storehouse <0214> of the snow <07950>, or seen <07200> the armory <0214> of the hail <01259>,

which <0834> I reserve <02820> for the time <06256> of trouble <06862>, for the day <03117> of war <07128> and battle <04421>?

In what <0335> direction <01870> is lightning <0216> dispersed <02505>, or the east winds <06921> scattered <06327> over <05921> the earth <0776>?

Who <04310> carves out <06385> a channel <08585> for the heavy rains <07858>, and a path <01870> for the rumble <06963> of thunder <02385>,

to cause it to rain <04305> on <05921> an uninhabited <0376> <03808> land <0776>, a desert <04057> where there are no <03808> human beings <0120>,

to satisfy <07646> a devastated <07722> and desolate <04875> land, and to cause it to sprout <04161> <06779> with vegetation <01877>?

Does the rain <04306> have <03426> a father <01>, or <0176> who <04310> has fathered <03205> the drops <096> of the dew <02919>?

From whose <04310> womb <0990> does the ice <07140> emerge <03318>, and the frost <03713> from the sky <08064>, who <04310> gives birth <03205> to it,

when the waters <04325> become hard <02244> like stone <068>, when the surface <06440> of the deep <08415> is frozen solid <03920>?

Can you tie <07194> the bands <04575> of the Pleiades <03598>, or <0176> release the cords <04189> of Orion <03685>?

Can you lead out <03318> the constellations <04216> in their seasons <06256>, or guide <05148> the Bear <05906> with <05921> its cubs <01121>?

Do you know <03045> the laws <02708> of the heavens <08064>, or <0518> can you set <07760> up their rule <04896> over the earth <0776>?

Can you raise <07311> your voice <06963> to the clouds <05645> so that a flood <08229> of water <04325> covers <03680> you?

Can you send <07971> out lightning <01300> bolts, and they go <01980>? Will they say <0559> to you, ‘Here <02005> we are’?

Who <04310> has put <07896> wisdom <02451> in the heart <02910>, or <0176> has imparted <05414> understanding <0998> to the mind <07907>?

Who <04310> by wisdom <02451> can count <05608> the clouds <07834>, and who <04310> can tip over <07901> the water jars <05035> of heaven <08064>,

when the dust <06083> hardens into <03332> a mass <04165>, and the clumps of earth <07263> stick together <01692>?

“Do you hunt <06679> prey <02964> for the lioness <03833>, and satisfy <04390> the appetite <02416> of the lions <03715>,

when they crouch <07817> in their dens <04585>, when they wait in ambush <0695> in <03926> the thicket <05521>?

Who <04310> prepares <03559> prey <06718> for the raven <06158>, when <03588> its young <03206> cry out <07768> to God <0410> and wander <08582> about for lack <01097> of food <0400>?
