2These women invited <07121> the people <05971> to the sacrifices <02077> of their gods <0430>; then the people <05971> ate <0398> and bowed down <07812> to their gods <0430>.
3When Israel <03478> joined <06775> themselves to Baal-peor <01187>, the anger <0639> of the Lord <03068> flared up <02734> against Israel <03478>.
4The Lord <03068> said <0559> to <0413> Moses <04872>, “Arrest <03947> all <03605> the leaders <07218> of the people <05971>, and hang <03363> them up <03363> before the Lord <03068> in broad <05048> daylight <08121>, so that the fierce <02740> anger <0639> of the Lord <03068> may be turned away <07725> from Israel <03478>.”
5So Moses <04872> said <0559> to <0413> the judges <08199> of Israel <03478>, “Each of you must execute <02026> those of his men <0582> <0582> who were joined <06775> to Baal-peor <01187>.”
6Just then one <0376> of the Israelites <03478> <01121> came <0935> and brought <07126> to <0413> his brothers <0251> a Midianite <04084> woman in the plain view <05869> of Moses <04872> and of the whole <03605> community <05712> of the Israelites <03478> <01121>, while they <01992> were weeping <01058> at the entrance <06607> of the tent <0168> of meeting <04150>.
7When Phinehas <06372> son <01121> of Eleazar <0499>, the son <01121> of Aaron <0175> the priest <03548>, saw <07200> it, he got up <06965> from among <08432> the assembly <05712>, took <03947> a javelin <07420> in his hand <03027>,
8and went <0935> after <0310> the Israelite <03478> man <0376> into <0413> the tent <06898> and thrust through <01856> the Israelite <03478> man <0376> and into <0413> the woman’s <0802> abdomen <06897>. So the plague <04046> was stopped <06113> from <05921> the Israelites <03478> <01121>.
9Those that died <04191> in the plague <04046> were 24,000 <0505> <06242> <0702>.
10The Lord <03068> spoke <01696> to <0413> Moses <04872>:
11“Phinehas <06372> son <01121> of Eleazar <0499>, the son <01121> of Aaron <0175> the priest <03548>, has turned <07725> my anger <02534> away from <05921> the Israelites <03478> <01121>, when he manifested such zeal <07068> for my sake <07068> among <08432> them, so that I did not <03808> consume <03615> the Israelites <03478> <01121> in my zeal <07068>.
12Therefore <03651>, announce <0559>: ‘I am going to give <05414> to him my covenant <01285> of peace <07965>.
13So it will be <01961> to him and his descendants <02233> after <0310> him a covenant <01285> of a permanent <05769> priesthood <03550>, because <0834> <08478> he has been zealous <07065> for his God <0430>, and has made atonement <03722> for <05921> the Israelites <03478> <01121>.’”
14Now the name <08034> of the Israelite <03478> who <0834> was stabbed <05221>– the one who was stabbed <05221> with <0854> the Midianite <04084> woman– was Zimri <02174> son <01121> of Salu <05543>, a leader <05387> of a clan <01004> of the Simeonites <08099>.
15The name <08034> of the Midianite <04084> woman <0802> who was killed <05221> was Cozbi <03579> daughter <01323> of Zur <06698>. He was a leader <07218> over the people <0523> of a clan <01> <01004> of Midian <04080>.
16Then the Lord <03068> spoke <01696> to <0413> Moses <04872>:
17“Bring trouble <06887> to the Midianites <04084>, and destroy <05221> them,
18because <03588> they <01992> bring trouble <06887> to you by their treachery <05231> with which <0834> they have deceived <05230> you in <05921> the matter <01697> of Peor <06465>, and in <05921> the matter <01697> of Cozbi <03579>, the daughter <01323> of a prince <05387> of Midian <04080>, their sister <0269>, who was killed <05221> on the day <03117> of the plague <04046> that happened as <05921> a result <01697> of Peor <06465>.”
