The Israelites <03478> <01121> again <03254> did <06213> evil <07451> in the Lord’s <03068> sight <05869> after Ehud’s <0164> death <04191>.
The Lord <03068> turned <04376> them over <04376> to <03027> King <04428> Jabin <02985> of Canaan <03667>, who <0834> ruled <04427> in Hazor <02674>. The general <08269> of his army <06635> was Sisera <05516>, who lived <03427> in Harosheth Haggoyim <01471> <02800>.
The Israelites <03478> <01121> cried out <06817> for help to <0413> the Lord <03068>, because <03588> Sisera had nine <08672> hundred <03967> chariots <07393> with iron-rimmed <01270> wheels, and he cruelly <02394> oppressed <03905> the Israelites <03478> <01121> for twenty <06242> years <08141>.
Now Deborah <01683>, a prophetess <05031>, wife <0802> <0802> of Lappidoth <03941>, was leading Israel <03478> at that time <06256>.
She <01931> would sit <03427> under <08478> the Date Palm Tree <08560> of Deborah <01683> between <0996> Ramah <07414> and <0996> Bethel <01008> in the Ephraimite <0669> hill country <02022>. The Israelites <03478> <01121> would come up <05927> to <0413> her to have their disputes settled <04941>.
She summoned <07121> <07971> Barak <01301> son <01121> of Abinoam <042> from Kedesh <06943> in Naphtali <05321>. She said <0559> to <0413> him, “Is it not <03808> true that the Lord <03068> God <0430> of Israel <03478> is commanding <06680> you? Go <01980>, march <04900> to Mount <02022> Tabor <08396>! Take <03947> with <05973> you ten <06235> thousand <0505> men <0376> from Naphtali <05321> and Zebulun <02074>!
I will bring <04900> Sisera <05516>, the general <08269> of Jabin’s <02985> army <06635>, to <0413> you at <0413> the Kishon <07028> River <05158>, along with his chariots <07393> and huge army <01995>. I will hand <03027> <05414> him over <03027> <05414> to you.”
Barak <01301> said <0559> to <0413> her, “If <0518> you go <01980> with <05973> me, I will go <01980>. But if <0518> you do not <03808> go <01980> with <05973> me, I will not <03808> go <01980>.”
She said <0559>, “I will indeed go <01980> with <05973> you. But you will not <03808> gain fame <08597> on <05921> the expedition <01870> you <0859> are undertaking <01980>, for <03588> the Lord <03068> will turn <04376> Sisera <05516> over <04376> to a woman <0802>.” Deborah <01683> got up <06965> and went <01980> with <05973> Barak <01301> to Kedesh <06943>.
Barak <01301> summoned <02199> men from Zebulun <02074> and Naphtali <05321> to Kedesh <06943>. Ten <06235> thousand <0505> men <0376> followed <07272> <05927> him; Deborah <01683> went up <05927> with <05973> him as well.
Now Heber <02268> the Kenite <07017> had moved away <06504> from the Kenites <07017>, the descendants <01121> of Hobab <02246>, Moses <04872>’ father-in-law <02859>. He lived <0168> <05186> near <05704> the great tree <0436> in Zaanannim <06815> near <0854> Kedesh <06943>.
When Sisera <05516> heard that <03588> Barak <01301> son <01121> of Abinoam <042> had gone up <05927> to Mount <02022> Tabor <08396>,
he <05516> ordered <02199> all <03605> his chariotry <07393>– nine <08672> hundred <03967> chariots <07393> with iron-rimmed <01270> wheels– and all <03605> the troops <05971> he had <0834> with <0854> him to go from Harosheth-Haggoyim <01471> <02800> to <0413> the River <05158> Kishon <07028>.
Deborah <01683> said <0559> to <0413> Barak <01301>, “Spring into action <06965>, for <03588> this <02088> is the day <03117> the Lord <03068> is handing <03027> <05414> Sisera <05516> over <03027> <05414> to you! Has the Lord <03068> not <03808> taken <03318> the lead?” Barak <01301> quickly went down <03381> from Mount <02022> Tabor <08396> with ten <06235> thousand <0505> men <0376> following <0310> him.
The Lord <03068> routed <02000> Sisera <05516>, all <03605> his chariotry <07393>, and all <03605> his army <04264> with the edge <06310> of the sword <02719>. Sisera <05516> jumped out <03381> of <05921> his chariot <04818> and ran away <05127> on foot <07272>.
Now Barak <01301> chased <0310> <07291> the chariots <07393> and the army <04264> all the way to <05704> Harosheth Haggoyim <01471> <02800>. Sisera’s <05516> whole <03605> army <04264> died <05307> by the edge <06310> of the sword <02719>; not <03808> even <05704> one <0259> survived <07604>!
Now Sisera <05516> ran away <05127> on foot <07272> to <0413> the tent <0168> of Jael <03278>, wife <0802> of Heber <02268> the Kenite <07017>, for <03588> King <04428> Jabin <02985> of Hazor <02674> and <0996> the family <01004> of Heber <02268> the Kenite <07017> had made a peace <07965> treaty.
Jael <03278> came out <03318> to welcome <07125> Sisera <05516>. She said <0559> to <0413> him, “Stop and rest <05493>, my lord <0113>. Stop and rest <05493> with <0413> me. Don’t <0408> be afraid <03372>.” So Sisera stopped to rest <05493> in <0413> her tent <0168>, and she put <03680> a blanket <08063> over <03680> him.
He said <0559> to <0413> her, “Give <08248> me a little <04592> water <04325> to drink <08248>, because <03588> I’m thirsty <06770>.” She opened <06605> a goatskin container <04997> of milk and gave <08248> him some milk <02461> to drink <08248>. Then she covered <03680> him up again.
He said <0559> to <0413> her, “Stand <05975> watch at the entrance <06607> to the tent <0168>. If <0518> anyone <0376> comes <0935> along and asks <07592> you, ‘Is there <03426> a man <0376> here <06311>?’ say <0559> ‘No <0369>.’”
Then Jael <03278> wife <0802> of Heber <02268> took <03947> a tent peg <03489> in one hand <03027> and a hammer <04718> in the other. She crept up <03909> <0935> on <0413> him, drove <08628> the tent peg <03489> through <06795> his temple <07541> into <06795> the ground <0776> while he <01931> was asleep <07290> from exhaustion <05774>, and he died <04191>.
Now <02009> Barak <01301> was chasing <07291> Sisera <05516>. Jael <03278> went out <03318> to welcome <07125> him. She said <0559> to him, “Come <01980> here and I will show <07200> you the man <0376> you <0859> are searching <01245> for.” He went <0935> with her into <0413> the tent, and there he saw <02009> Sisera <05516> sprawled out <05307> dead <04191> with the tent peg <03489> in his temple <07541>.
That <01931> day <03117> God <0430> humiliated <03665> King <04428> Jabin <02985> of Canaan <03667> before <06440> the Israelites <03478> <01121>.
Israel’s <03478> <01121> power <03027> continued <01980> <01980> to overwhelm <07186> King <04428> Jabin <02985> of Canaan <03667> until <0834> <05704> they did away <03772> with him <02985>.
