When <03588> Israel <03478> was a young man <05288>, I loved <0157> him like a son, and I summoned <07121> my son <01121> out of Egypt <04714>.
But the more I summoned <07121> them, the farther <03651> they departed <01980> from me <06440>. They sacrificed <02076> to the Baal idols <01168> and burned incense <06999> to images <06456>.
Yet it was I <0595> who led <07270> Ephraim <0669>, I took <03947> them by <05921> the arm <02220>; but they did not <03808> acknowledge <03045> that <03588> I had healed <07495> them.
I led <04900> them with leather <0160> cords <02256>, with leather <05688> ropes; I lifted <07311> the yoke <05923> from <05921> their neck <03895>, and gently <0328> fed <0398> them.
They will return <07725> to <0413> Egypt <04714>! Assyria <0804> will rule over <04428> them because <03588> they refuse <03985> to repent <07725>!
A sword <02719> will flash <02342> in their cities <05892>, it will destroy <03615> the bars of <0905> their city gates <0905>, and will devour <0398> them in their fortresses <04156>.
My people <05971> are obsessed <08511> with turning away <04878> from <0413> me; they call <07121> to Baal <05920>, but he will never <03808> exalt <07311> them!
How <0349> can I give <05414> you up, O Ephraim <0669>? How can I surrender <04042> you, O Israel <03478>? How <0349> can I treat <05414> you like Admah <0126>? How can I make <07760> you like Zeboiim <06636>? I have had a change <02015> of heart <03820>! All <03162> my tender compassions <05150> are aroused <03648>!
I cannot <03808> carry out <06213> my fierce <02740> anger <0639>! I cannot <03808> totally <07725> destroy <07843> Ephraim <0669>! Because <03588> I <0595> am God <0410>, and not <03808> man <0582>– the Holy One <06918> among <07130> you– I will not <03808> come <0935> in wrath!
He will roar <07580> like a lion <0738>, and they will follow <01980> <0310> the Lord <03068>; when <03588> he <01931> roars <07580>, his children <01121> will come trembling <02729> from the west <03220>.
They will return in fear and trembling <02729> like birds <06833> from Egypt <04714>, like doves <03123> from Assyria <0804>, and I will <03427> settle them in <05921> their homes <01004>,” declares <05002> the Lord <03068>.
Ephraim <0669> has surrounded <05437> me with lies <03585>; the house <01004> of Israel <03478> has surrounded me with deceit <04820>. But Judah <03063> still <05750> roams <07300> about with <05973> God <0410>; he remains faithful <0539> to the Holy One <06918>.
