When <03588> you go <03318> to war <04421> against <05921> your enemies <0341> and see <07200> chariotry <07393> <05483> and troops <05971> who outnumber <07227> you, do not <03808> be afraid <03372> of them <01992>, for <03588> the Lord <03068> your God <0430>, who brought <05927> you up <05927> out of the land <0776> of Egypt <04714>, is with you <05973>.
As <01961> you move forward <07126> for <0413> battle <04421>, the priest <03548> will approach <05066> and say <01696> to <0413> the soldiers <05971>,
“Listen <08085>, Israel <03478>! Today <03117> you <0859> are moving forward <07131> to do battle <04421> with your enemies <0341>. Do not <0408> be fainthearted <03824> <07401>. Do not <0408> fear <03372> and tremble <02648> or be terrified <06206> because of them,
for <03588> the Lord <03068> your God <0430> goes <01980> with <05973> you to fight <03898> on your behalf against <05973> your enemies <0341> to give <03467> you victory <03467>.”
Moreover, the officers <07860> are to say <01696> to <0413> the troops <05971>, “Who <04310> among you has built <01129> a new <02319> house <01004> and not <03808> dedicated <02596> it? He may go home <01004> <07725> <01980>, lest <06435> he die <04191> in battle <04421> and someone <0376> else <0312> dedicate <02596> it.
Or who <04310> among you has planted <05193> a vineyard <03754> and not <03808> benefited <02490> from it? He may go home <01004> <07725>, lest <06435> he die <04191> in battle <04421> and someone <0376> else <0312> benefit <02490> from it.
Or who <04310> among you <0376> has become engaged <0781> to a woman <0802> but has not <03808> married <03947> her? He may go home <01004> <07725> <01980>, lest <06435> he die <04191> in battle <04421> and someone <0376> else <0312> marry <03947> her.”
In addition <03254>, the officers <07860> are to say <01696> to <0413> the troops <05971>, “Who <04310> among you is afraid <03373> and fainthearted <03824> <07390>? He may go <01980> home <01004> so that he will not <03808> make <04549> his fellow <0251> soldier’s heart <03824> as fearful <04549> as his own <03824>.”
Then, when <01961> the officers <07860> have finished <03615> speaking <01696>, they must appoint <06485> unit commanders <06635> <08269> to lead <07218> the troops <05971>.
When <03588> you approach <07126> a city <05892> to <0413> wage war <03898> against <05921> it, offer it <07121> terms of <07121> peace <07965>.
If <0518> it accepts <06030> your terms <07965> and submits <06605> to you, all <03605> the people <05971> found <04672> in it will become <01961> your slaves <05647> <04522>.
If <0518> it does not <03808> accept terms of peace <07999> but makes <06213> war <04421> with <05973> you, then you are to lay siege <06696> to <05921> it.
The Lord <03068> your God <0430> will deliver <05414> it over to you <03027> and you must kill <05221> every <03605> single male <02138> by the sword <02719>.
However <07535>, the women <0802>, little children <02945>, cattle <0929>, and anything <03605> else in the city <05892>– all <03605> its plunder <07998>– you may take for yourselves as spoil <0962>. You may take <0398> from your enemies <0341> the plunder <07998> that <0834> the Lord <03068> your God <0430> has given <05414> you.
This is how <03651> you are to deal with <06213> all <03605> those cities <05892> located far <07350> from <04480> you, those that <0834> do not <03808> belong to these <0428> nearby <02007> nations <01471>.
As for <07535> the cities <05892> of these <0428> peoples <05971> that <0834> the Lord <03068> your God <0430> is going to give <05414> you as an inheritance <05159>, you must not <03808> allow <02421> a single living <02421> thing <03605> to survive <05397>.
Instead <03588> you must utterly annihilate <02763> <02763> them– the Hittites <02850>, Amorites <0567>, Canaanites <03669>, Perizzites <06522>, Hivites <02340>, and Jebusites <02983>– just as <0834> the Lord <03068> your God <0430> has commanded <06680> you,
so <04616> that <0834> they cannot <03808> teach <03925> you all <03605> the abhorrent <08441> ways they worship <06213> their gods <0430>, causing you to sin <02398> against the Lord <03068> your God <0430>.
If <03588> you besiege <06696> a city <05892> for a long <07227> time <03117> while attempting to <05921> capture <08610> it, you must not <03808> chop down <07843> its trees <06086>, for <03588> you may eat <0398> fruit from <04480> them <0853> and should not <03808> cut <03772> them down <03772>. A tree <06086> in the field <07704> is not human <0120> that <03588> you should besiege <04692> it!
However <07535>, you may chop down <03772> any tree <06086> you know <03045> is not <03808> suitable for food <03978>, and you may use it to build <01129> siege <04692> works against <05921> the city <05892> that <0834> is making <06213> war <04421> with <05973> you until <05704> that city falls <03381>.
