Listen <08085>, Israel <03478>: Today <03117> you <0859> are about to cross <05674> the Jordan <03383> so you can dispossess <03423> the nations <01471> there, people greater <01419> and stronger <06099> than <04480> you who live in large cities <05892> with extremely high <01419> fortifications <08064> <01219>.
They include the Anakites <06062> <01121>, a numerous <01419> and tall <07311> people <05971> whom <0834> you <0859> know <03045> about and of whom <04310> it is said, “Who is able to resist <03320> the Anakites <06061> <01121>?”
Understand <03045> today <03117> that <03588> the Lord <03068> your God <0430> who goes <05674> before <06440> you is a devouring <0398> fire <0784>; he <01931> will defeat <08045> and subdue <03665> them before <06440> you. You will dispossess <03423> and destroy <06> them quickly <04118> just <0834> as he <03068> has told <01696> you.
Do not <0408> think <03824> <0559> to yourself after the Lord <03068> your God <0430> has driven <01920> them out <01920> before <06440> you, “Because of my own righteousness <06666> the Lord <03068> has brought <0935> me here to possess <03423> this <02063> land <0776>.” It is because of the wickedness <07564> of these <0428> nations <01471> that the Lord <03068> is driving <03423> them out <03423> ahead <06440> of you.
It is not <03808> because of your righteousness <06666>, or even your inner <03824> uprightness <03476>, that you <0859> have come <0935> here to possess <03423> their land <0776>. Instead, because <03588> of the wickedness <07564> of these <0428> nations <01471> the Lord <03068> your God <0430> is driving <03423> them out <03423> ahead <06440> of you in order to <04616> confirm <06965> the promise <01697> he <03068> made on oath <07650> to your ancestors <01>, to Abraham <085>, Isaac <03327>, and Jacob <03290>.
Understand <03045>, therefore, that <03588> it is not <03808> because of your righteousness <06666> that the Lord <03068> your God <0430> is about to give <05414> you this <02063> good <02896> land <0776> as a possession <03423>, for <03588> you <0859> are a stubborn <06203> <07186> people <05971>!
Remember <02142>– don’t <0408> ever forget <07911>– how <0834> you provoked <07107> the Lord <03068> your God <0430> in the desert <04057>; from <04480> the time <03117> you left <03318> the land <0776> of Egypt <04714> until <05704> you came <0935> to <05704> this <02088> place <04725> you were <01961> constantly rebelling <04784> against <05973> him.
At Horeb <02722> you provoked <07107> him <03068> and he <03068> was angry <0599> enough with you to destroy <08045> you.
When I went up <05927> the mountain <02022> to receive <03947> the stone <068> tablets <03871>, the tablets <03871> of the covenant <01285> that <0834> the Lord <03068> made <03772> with <05973> you, I remained <03427> there <02022> forty <0705> <0705> days <03117> and nights <03915>, eating <0398> and drinking <08354> nothing <03808>.
The Lord <03068> gave <05414> me the two <08147> stone <068> tablets <03871>, written <03789> by the very finger <0676> of God <0430>, and on <05921> them was everything <01697> <03605> he said <01696> to <05973> you at the mountain <02022> from the midst <08432> of the fire <0784> at the time <03117> of that assembly <06951>.
Now at the end <07093> of the forty <0705> days <03117> and nights <03915> the Lord <03068> presented <05414> me with <0413> the two <08147> stone <068> tablets <03871>, the tablets <03871> of the covenant <01285>.
And he <03068> said <0559> to <0413> me, “Get up <06965>, go down <03381> at once <04118> from here <02088> because <03588> your people <05971> whom <0834> you brought out <03318> of Egypt <04714> have sinned <07843>! They have quickly <04118> turned <05493> from <04480> the way <01870> I commanded <06680> them and have made <06213> for themselves a cast metal image <04541>.”
Moreover, he said <0559> to <0413> me, “I have taken note <07200> of these <02088> people <05971>; they <01931> are a stubborn <06203> <07186> lot!
Stand aside <07503> and I will destroy <08045> them, obliterating <04229> their very name <08034> from <08478> memory <08064>, and I will make <06213> you into <0854> a stronger <06099> and more numerous <07227> nation <01471> than <04480> they are.”
So I turned <06437> and went down <03381> the mountain <02022> while it <02022> was blazing <01197> with fire <0784>; the two <08147> tablets <03871> of the covenant <01285> were in <05921> my hands <03027>.
When I looked <07200>, you had indeed <02009> sinned <02398> against the Lord <03068> your God <0430> and had cast <06213> for yourselves a metal <04541> calf <05695>; you had quickly <04118> turned aside <05493> from <04480> the way <01870> he had commanded <06680> you!
I grabbed <08610> the two <08147> tablets <03871>, threw <07993> them down <07993>, and shattered <07665> them before your very eyes <05869>.
Then I again fell down <05307> before <06440> the Lord <03068> for forty <0705> days <03117> and nights <03915>; I ate <0398> and drank <08354> nothing <03808> because <05921> of all <03605> the sin <02403> you had <0834> committed <02398>, doing <06213> such evil <07451> before <05869> the Lord <03068> as to enrage <03707> him.
For <03588> I was terrified <03025> at the Lord’s <03068> intense <02534> anger <0639> that <0834> threatened <07107> to destroy <08045> you. But he <03068> listened <08085> to me <0413> this time <06471> as well <01571>.
The Lord <03068> was also angry <0599> enough <03966> at Aaron <0175> to kill <08045> him, but at <01157> that time <06256> I prayed <06419> for him <0175> too.
As for your sinful <02403> thing that <0834> you had made <06213>, the calf <05695>, I took <03947> it, melted <0784> <08313> it down <0784> <08313>, ground <02912> it up until <05704> it was as fine <03190> as dust <06083>, and tossed <07993> the dust <06083> into <0413> the stream <05158> that flows down <03381> the mountain <02022>.
Moreover, you continued to provoke the Lord <03068> at Taberah <08404>, Massah <04532>, and Kibroth-Hattaavah <06914>.
And when he <03068> sent <07971> you from Kadesh-Barnea <06947> and told <0559> you, “Go up <05927> and possess <03423> the land <0776> I have <0834> given <05414> you,” you rebelled <04784> against the Lord <03068> your God <0430> <06310> and would neither <03808> believe <0539> nor <03808> obey <06963> <08085> him.
You have been <01961> rebelling <04784> against <05973> him <03068> from the very first day <03117> I knew <03045> you!
I lay flat on the ground <05307> before <06440> the Lord <03068> for forty <0705> days <03117> and nights <03915>, for <03588> he had said <0559> he would destroy <08045> you.
I prayed <06419> to <0413> him <03068>: O, Lord <0136> God <03068>, do not <0408> destroy <07843> your people <05971>, your valued property <05159> that <0834> you have powerfully <01433> redeemed <06299>, whom <0834> you brought out <03318> of Egypt <04714> by <03027> your strength <02389>.
Remember <02142> your servants <05650> Abraham <085>, Isaac <03327>, and Jacob <03290>; ignore <0413> <06437> <0408> the stubbornness <07190>, wickedness <07562>, and sin <02403> of these <02088> people <05971>.
Otherwise <06435> the people of the land <0776> from which <0834> you brought <03318> us will say <0559>, “The Lord <03068> was unable <03201> <01097> to bring <0935> them to <0413> the land <0776> he promised <01696> them, and because of his hatred <08135> for them he has brought them out <03318> to kill <04191> them in the desert <04057>.”
They <01992> are your people <05971>, your valued property <05159>, whom <0834> you brought out <03318> with great <01419> strength <03581> and power <05186> <02220>.
