2The Lord <03068> says <0559>, “Do not <0408> start following pagan religious practices <01471> <01870>. Do not <0408> be in awe <02865> of signs <0226> that occur in the sky <08064> even though the nations <01471> hold them <01992> in awe <02865>.
3For <03588> the religion <02708> of these people <05971> is worthless <01892>. They cut down <03772> a tree <06086> in the forest <03293>, and a craftsman <02796> makes <03027> it into an idol <04639> with his tools <04621>.
4He decorates <03302> it with overlays of silver <03701> and gold <02091>. He uses hammer <04717> and nails <04548> to fasten <02388> it together <02388> so that it will not <03808> fall over <06328>.
5Such idols are like scarecrows <08560> in a cucumber field <04749>. They <01992> cannot <03808> talk <01696>. They must be carried <05375> <05375> because <03588> they cannot <03808> walk <06805>. Do not <0408> be afraid <03372> of them <01992> because <03588> they cannot <03808> hurt <07489> you. And <01571> they do not have any <0369> power <03190> to help <0854> you.”
6I said, “There is no one <0369> like <03644> you, Lord <03068>. You are great <01419>. And you <0859> are renowned <08034> <01419> for your power <01369>.
7Everyone should revere <03372> you, O King <04428> of all nations <01471>, because <03588> you deserve to be revered <02969>. For <03588> there is no one <0369> like <03644> you among any <03605> of the wise people <02450> of the nations <01471> nor among any <03605> of their kings <04438>.
8The people <0259> of those nations are both stupid <01197> and foolish <03688>. Instruction <04148> from a wooden idol <06086> is worthless <01892>!
9Hammered-out <07554> silver <03701> is brought <0935> from Tarshish <08659> and gold <02091> is brought from Uphaz <0210> to cover those idols. They are the handiwork <03027> <04639> of carpenters <02796> and goldsmiths <06884>. They are clothed in blue <08504> and purple <0713> clothes <03830>. They are all <03605> made <04639> by skillful <02450> workers.
10The Lord <03068> is the only true <0571> God <0430>. He <01931> is the living <02416> God <0430> and the everlasting <05769> King <04428>. When he shows his anger <07110> the earth <0776> shakes <07493>. None <03808> of the nations <01471> can stand up <03557> to his fury <02195>.
11You people of Israel should tell <0560> those nations this <01836>: ‘These gods <0426> did not <03809> make <05648> heaven <08065> and earth <0778>. They will disappear <07> from the earth <0772> and from <04481> under <08460> the heavens <08065>.’
12The Lord is the one who by his power <03581> made <06213> the earth <0776>. He is the one who by his wisdom <02451> established <03559> the world <08398>. And by his understanding <08394> he spread out <05186> the skies <08064>.
13When his voice <06963> thunders <05414>, the heavenly <08064> ocean <04325> <01995> roars. He makes the clouds <05387> rise <05927> from the far-off horizons <07097>. He makes the lightning <01300> flash out in the midst of the rain <04306>. He unleashes <03318> <06213> the wind <07307> from the places where he stores <0214> it.
14All <03605> these idolaters <0120> will prove to be stupid and ignorant <01847> <01197>. Every <03605> goldsmith <06884> will be disgraced <03001> by the idol <06459> he made. For <03588> the image <05262> he forges is merely a sham <08267>. There is no <03808> breath <07307> in any of those idols.
15They <01992> are worthless <01892>, mere objects <04639> to be mocked <08595>. When the time <06256> comes to punish <06486> them, they will be destroyed <06>.
16The Lord, who is the inheritance <02506> of Jacob’s <03290> descendants, is not <03808> like them <0428>. He is the one <01931> who created <03335> everything <03605>. And the people <07626> of Israel <03478> are those he claims as his own <05159>. He is known <08034> as the Lord <03068> who rules over all <06635>.”
17Gather <0622> your belongings <03666> together <0622> and prepare to leave the land <0776>, you people <03427> of Jerusalem who are being besieged <04692>.
18For <03588> the Lord <03069> says <0559>, “I will now throw out <07049> those who live <03427> in this <02063> land <0776>. I will bring <06887> so much trouble <06887> on them that <04616> they <01992> will actually feel <04672> it.”
19And I cried out <0188>, “We are doomed <07667>! Our wound <04347> is severe <02470>! We once thought <0559>, ‘This <02088> is only <0389> an illness <02483>. And we will be able to bear <05375> it!’
20But our tents <0168> have been destroyed <07703>. The ropes <04340> that held them in place have been ripped apart <05423>. Our children <01121> are gone <03318> and are not coming back <0369>. There is no survivor <0369> to put <05186> our tents <0168> back up <05186>, no one left <06965> to hang their tent curtains <03407> in place.
21For <03588> our leaders <07462> are stupid <01197>. They have not <03808> sought <01875> the Lord’s <03068> advice <01875>. So <03651> they do not <03808> act wisely <07919>, and the people <04830> they are responsible for have all <03605> been scattered <06327>.
22Listen <06963>! News <08052> is coming even now <02009>. The rumble <07494> of a great <01419> army is heard approaching from a land <0776> in the north <06828>. It is coming <0935> to turn <07760> the towns <05892> of Judah <03063> into rubble <08077>, places where only <04583> jackals <08577> live <04583>.
23Lord <03068>, we know <03045> that <03588> people <0120> do not <03808> control their own destiny <01870>. It is not <03808> in their <0376> power <03559> <01980> to determine <03559> <01980> what will happen <06806> to them.
24Correct <03256> us, Lord <03068>, but only <0389> in due measure <04941>. Do not <0408> punish us in anger <0639> or <06435> you will reduce <04591> us to nothing <04591>.
25Vent <08210> your anger <02534> on <05921> the nations <01471> that <0834> do not <03808> acknowledge <03045> you. Vent <08034> it on <05921> the peoples <04940> who <0834> do not <03808> worship <07121> you. For <03588> they have destroyed <0398> the people of Jacob <03290>. They have completely destroyed <03615> <0398> them and left <08074> their homeland <05116> in utter ruin <08074>.
