 <<  Yesaya 38 >>

In those <01992> days <03117> Hezekiah <02396> was stricken <02470> with a terminal illness <04191>. The prophet <05030> Isaiah <03470> son <01121> of Amoz <0531> visited <0935> him and told <0559> him, “This is what <03541> the Lord <03068> says <0559>, ‘Give instructions <06680> to your household <01004>, for <03588> you are about to die <04191>; you <0859> will not <03808> get well <02421>.’”

Hezekiah <02396> turned <05437> his face <06440> to <0413> the wall <07023> and prayed <06419> to <0413> the Lord <03068>,

“Please <0577>, Lord <03068>. Remember <02142> how <0834> I have served <01980> you faithfully <0571> and with wholehearted devotion <08003> <03820>, and how I have carried out <06213> your will.” Then Hezekiah <02396> wept bitterly <01419> <01058> <01058>.

The Lord <03068> told <0559> Isaiah <03470>,

“Go <01980> and tell <0559> Hezekiah <02396>: ‘This is what <03541> the Lord <03069> God <0430> of your ancestor <01> David <01732> says <0559>: “I have heard <08085> your prayer <08605>; I have seen <07200> your tears <01832>. Look <02005>, I will add <03254> fifteen <06240> <02568> years <08141> to <05921> your life <03117>,

and rescue <05337> you and this <02063> city <05892> from <03709> the king <04428> of Assyria <0804>. I will shield <01598> this <02063> city <05892>.”’”

Isaiah replied, “This <02088> is your sign <0226> from the Lord <03068> confirming that <0834> the Lord <03068> will do <06213> what <0834> he has said <01696>:

Look <02005>, I will make <07725> the shadow <06738> go <03381> back <0322> ten <06235> steps <04609> on the stairs <04609> of Ahaz <0271>.” And then <07725> the shadow went back <03381> ten <06235> steps <04609>.

This is the prayer <04385> of King <04428> Hezekiah <02396> of Judah <03063> when he was sick <02470> and then recovered <02421> from his illness <02483>:

“I <0589> thought <0559>, ‘In the middle <01824> of my life <03117> I must walk <01980> through the gates <08179> of Sheol <07585>, I am deprived <06485> of the rest <03499> of my years <08141>.’

“I thought <0559>, ‘I will no <03808> longer see <07200> the Lord <03050> in the land <0776> of the living <02416>, I will no <03808> longer <05750> look <05027> on humankind <0120> with <05973> the inhabitants <03427> of the world <02309>.

My dwelling place <01755> is removed <05265> and taken away <01540> from <04480> me like a shepherd’s <07473> tent <0168>. I rolled up <07088> my life <02416> like a weaver <0707> rolls cloth; from the loom <01803> he cuts me off <01214>. You turn day <03117> into night <03915> and end <07999> my life.

I cry out <07737> until <05704> morning <01242>; like <03651> a lion <0738> he shatters <07665> all <03605> my bones <06106>; you turn day <03117> into <05704> night <03915> and end <07999> my life.

Like <03651> a swallow <05693> or a thrush <05483> I chirp <06850>, I coo <01897> like a dove <03123>; my eyes <05869> grow tired <01809> from looking up to the sky <04791>. O sovereign master <0136>, I am oppressed <06234>; help <06148> me!

What <04100> can I say <01696>? He <01931> has decreed <0559> and acted <06213>. I will walk slowly <01718> all <03605> my years <08141> because I am overcome <05921> with grief <05315> <04751>.

O sovereign master <0136>, your decrees can give men life <02421>; may years <03605> of life <02416> be restored <07307> to me. Restore <02492> my health <02492> and preserve my life <02421>.’

“Look <02009>, the grief <04751> <04751> I experienced <04751> <04751> was for my benefit <07965>. You <0859> delivered <02836> me <05315> from the pit <07845> of oblivion <01097>. For <03588> you removed <07993> all <03605> my sins <02399> from <01460> <0310> your sight <01460> <0310>.

Indeed <03588> Sheol <07585> does not <03808> give you thanks <03034>; death <04194> does not praise <01984> you. Those who descend <03381> into <0413> the pit <0953> do not <03808> anticipate <07663> your faithfulness <0571>.

The living <02416> person, the living <02416> person, he <01931> gives you thanks <03034>, as <03644> I do today <03117>. A father <01> tells <03045> his sons <01121> about your faithfulness <0571>.

The Lord <03068> is about to deliver <03467> me, and we will celebrate with music <05059> <05058> for the rest <03117> of our lives <02416> in <05921> the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>.”

Isaiah <03470> ordered <0559>, “Let them take <05375> a fig <08384> cake <01690> and apply <04799> it to <05921> the ulcerated sore <07822> and he will get well <02421>.”

Hezekiah <02396> said <0559>, “What <04100> is the confirming sign <0226> that <03588> I will go up <05927> to the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>?”
