“Now <06258>, listen <08085>, Jacob <03290> my servant <05650>, Israel <03478> whom I have chosen <0977>!”

This is what <03541> the Lord <03068>, the one who made <06213> you, says <0559>– the one who formed <03335> you in the womb <0990> and helps <05826> you: “Don’t <0408> be afraid <03372>, my servant <05650> Jacob <03290>, Jeshurun <03484>, whom I have chosen <0977>!

For <03588> I will pour <03332> water <04325> on <05921> the parched <06771> ground and cause streams to flow <05140> on <05921> the dry land <03004>. I will pour <03332> my spirit <07307> on <05921> your offspring <02233> and my blessing <01293> on <05921> your children <06631>.

They will sprout up <06779> like a tree in the grass <02682>, like poplars <06155> beside <05921> channels <02988> of water <04325>.

One <02088> will say <0559>, ‘I <0589> belong to the Lord <03068>,’ and another <02088> will use <07121> the name <08034> ‘Jacob <03290>.’ One <02088> will write <03789> on his hand <03027>, ‘The Lord’s <03068>,’ and use <03655> the name <08034> ‘Israel <03478>.’”

This is what <03541> the Lord <03068>, Israel’s <03478> king <04428>, says <0559>, their protector <01350>, the Lord <03068> who commands armies <06635>: “I <0589> am the first <07223> and I <0589> am the last <0314>, there is no <0369> God <0430> but <01107> me.

Who <04310> is like <03644> me? Let him make his claim <07121>! Let him announce <05046> it and explain <06186> it to me– since I established <07760> an ancient <05769> people <05971>– let them announce <05046> future events <0935> <0857>!

Don’t <0408> panic <06342>! Don’t <0408> be afraid <07297>! Did I not <03808> tell you beforehand <08085> <0227> and decree <05046> it? You <0859> are my witnesses <05707>! Is <03426> there any God <0433> but <01107> me? There is no <0369> other sheltering rock <06697>; I know <03045> of none <01077>.

All <03605> who form <03335> idols <06459> are nothing <08414>; the things in which they delight <02530> are worthless <03276> <01077>. Their <01992> witnesses <05707> cannot <01077> see <07200>; they recognize <03045> nothing <01077>, so <04616> they are put to shame <0954>.

Who <04310> forms <03335> a god <0410> and casts <05258> an idol <06459> that <01115> will prove worthless <03276>?

Look <02005>, all <03605> his associates <02270> will be put to shame <0954>; the craftsmen <02796> are mere humans <0120>. Let them all <03605> assemble <06908> and take their stand <05975>! They will panic <06342> and be put to shame <0954>.

A blacksmith <01270> <02796> works <06466> with his tool <04621> and forges metal over the coals <06352>. He forms <03335> it with hammers <04717>; he makes <06466> it with his strong <03581> arm <02220>. He gets hungry <07456> and loses <0369> his energy <03581>; he drinks <08354> no <03808> water <04325> and gets tired <03286>.

A carpenter <06086> <02790> takes <05186> measurements <06957>; he marks out <08388> an outline <08279> of its form; he scrapes <06213> it with chisels <04741>, and marks <08388> it with a compass <04230>. He patterns <06213> it after the human <0376> form <08403>, like a well-built <08597> human <0120> being, and puts <03427> it in a shrine <01004>.

He cuts down <03772> cedars <0730> and acquires <03947> a cypress <08645> or an oak <0437>. He gets <0553> trees <06086> from the forest <03293>; he plants <05193> a cedar <0766> and the rain <01653> makes it grow <01431>.

A man <0120> uses it to make a fire <01197>; he <01992> takes <03947> some of it and warms <02552> himself. Yes <0637>, he kindles <05400> a fire and <0637> bakes <0644> bread <03899>. Then he makes <06466> a god <0410> and worships <07812> it; he makes <06213> an idol <06459> and bows down <05456> to it.

Half <02677> of it he burns <08313> in <01119> the fire <0784>– over <05921> that half <02677> he cooks <0398> meat <01320>; he roasts <06740> a meal <06748> and fills <07646> himself. Yes <0637>, he warms <02552> himself and says <0559>, ‘Ah <01889>! I am warm <02552> as I look at <07200> the fire <0217>.’

With the rest <07611> of it he makes <06213> a god <0410>, his idol <06459>; he bows down <05456> <05456> to it and worships <07812> it. He prays <06419> to <0413> it, saying <0559>, ‘Rescue <05337> me, for <03588> you <0859> are my god <0410>!’

They do not <03808> comprehend <03045> or <03808> understand <0995>, for <03588> their eyes <05869> are blind <02902> and cannot see <07200>; their minds <03826> do not discern <07919>.

No <03808> one thinks <07725> to <0413> himself <03820>, nor <03808> do they comprehend <01847> or <03808> understand <08394> and say <0559> to themselves: ‘I burned <08313> half <02677> of it in <01119> the fire <0784>– yes <0637>, I baked <0644> bread <03899> over <05921> the coals <01513>; I roasted <06740> meat <01320> and ate <0398> it. With the rest <03499> of it should I make <06213> a disgusting <08441> idol <0944>? Should I bow down <05456> to dry wood <06086>?’

He feeds <07462> on ashes <0665>; his deceived <02048> mind <03820> misleads <05186> him. He cannot <03808> rescue <05337> himself <05315>, nor <03808> does he say <0559>, ‘Is this not <03808> a false <08267> god I hold in my right hand <03225>?’

Remember <02142> these <0428> things, O Jacob <03290>, O Israel <03478>, for <03588> you <0859> are my servant <05650>. I formed <03335> you <0859> to be my servant <05650>; O Israel <03478>, I will not <03808> forget <05382> you!

I remove <04229> the guilt <05645> of your rebellious <06588> deeds as if they were a cloud <06051>, the guilt of your sins <02403> as if they were a cloud. Come back <07725> to <0413> me, for <03588> I protect <01350> you.”

Shout for joy <07442>, O sky <08064>, for <03588> the Lord <03069> intervenes <06213>; shout out <07321>, you subterranean regions <08482> of the earth <0776>. O mountains <02022>, give <06476> a joyful shout <07440>; you too, O forest <03293> and all <03605> your trees <06086>! For <03588> the Lord <03069> protects <01350> Jacob <03290>; he reveals his splendor <06286> through Israel <03478>.

This is what <03541> the Lord <03068>, your protector <01350>, says <0559>, the one who formed <03335> you in the womb <0990>: “I <0595> am the Lord <03068>, who made <06213> everything <03605>, who alone <0905> stretched out <05186> the sky <08064>, who fashioned <07554> the earth <0776> all by myself <0854>,

who frustrates <06565> the omens <0226> of the empty talkers <0907> and humiliates <01984> the omen readers <07080>, who overturns <0268> <07725> the counsel of the wise men <02450> and makes their advice <01847> seem foolish <05528>,

who fulfills <06965> the oracles <01697> of his prophetic servants <05650> and brings to pass <07999> the announcements <06098> of his messengers <04397>, who says <0559> about Jerusalem <03389>, ‘She will be inhabited <03427>,’ and about the towns <05892> of Judah <03063>, ‘They will be rebuilt <01129>, her ruins <02723> I will raise up <06965>,’

who says <0559> to the deep <06683> sea, ‘Be dry <02717>! I will dry up <03001> your sea <05104> currents,’

who commissions <0559> Cyrus <03566>, the one I appointed as shepherd <07473> to carry out <07999> all <03605> my wishes <02656> and to decree <0559> concerning Jerusalem <03389>, ‘She will be rebuilt <01129>,’ and concerning the temple <01964>, ‘It will be reconstructed <03245>.’”
