For the leader: for Jeduthun: a psalm: for David I SAID: “I shall keep watch over my conduct, that what I say may be free from sin. I shall keep a muzzle on my mouth, so long as the wicked confront me.”
I kept utterly silent, I refrained from speech. My agony was quickened,
and my heart burned within me. As I pondered my mind was inflamed, and I began to speak:
“LORD, let me know my end and the number of my days; tell me how short my life is to be.
I know you have made my days a mere span long, and my whole life is as nothing in your sight. A human being, however firm he stands, is but a puff of wind, [Selah]
his life but a passing shadow; the riches he piles up are no more than vapour, and there is no knowing who will enjoy them.”
Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.
Deliver me from all who do me wrong; make me no longer the butt of fools.
I am dumb, I shall not open my mouth, because it is your doing.
Rain no more blows on me; I am exhausted by your hostility.
When you rebuke anyone to punish his sin, you make what he desires melt away; every mortal being is only a breath of wind. [Selah]
Hear my prayer, LORD; listen to my cry, do not be deaf to my weeping; for I find shelter with you; I am a passing guest, as all my forefathers were.
Frown on me no more; let me look cheerful before I depart and cease to be.
