 <<  Lukas 23 >>

Then<2532> the whole<537> body<4128> of them got<450> up and brought<71> Him before<1909> Pilate<4091>.

And they began<757> to accuse<2723> Him, saying<3004>, "We found<2147> this<3778> man<3778> misleading<1294> our nation<1484> and forbidding<2967> to pay<1325> taxes<5411> to Caesar<2541>, and saying<3004> that He Himself<1438> is Christ<5547>, a King<935>."

So<1161> Pilate<4091> asked<2065> Him, saying<3004>, "Are You the King<935> of the Jews<2453>?" And He answered<611> him and said<5346>, "It is as you say<3004>."

Then<2532> Pilate<4091> said<3004> to the chief<749> priests<749> and the crowds<3793>, "I find<2147> no<3762> guilt<159> in this<3778> man<444>."

But they kept on insisting<2001>, saying<3004>, "He stirs<383> up the people<2992>, teaching<1321> all<3650> over<2596> Judea<2453>, starting<757> from Galilee<1056> even as far<2193> as this<5602> place<5602>."

When<1161> Pilate<4091> heard<191> it, he asked<1905> whether<1487> the man<444> was a Galilean<1057>.

And when he learned<1921> that He belonged<1510><1537> to Herod's<2264> jurisdiction<1849>, he sent<375> Him to Herod<2264>, who himself<846> also<2532> was in Jerusalem<2414> at that time<2250>.

Now<1161> Herod<2264> was very<3029> glad<5463> when he saw<3708> Jesus<2424>; for he had<1510> wanted<2309> to see<3708> Him for a long<2425> time<5550>, because<1223> he had been hearing<191> about<4012> Him and was hoping<1679> to see<3708> some<5100> sign<4592> performed<1096> by Him.

And he questioned<1905> Him at some<2425> length<3056><2425>; but He answered<611> him nothing<3762>.

And the chief<749> priests<749> and the scribes<1122> were standing<2476> there, accusing<2723> Him vehemently<2159>.

And Herod<2264> with his soldiers<4753>, after treating<1848> Him with contempt<1848> and mocking<1702> Him, dressed<4016> Him in a gorgeous<2986> robe<2066> and sent<375> Him back<375> to Pilate<4091>.

Now<1161> Herod<2264> and Pilate<4091> became<1096> friends<5384> with one<240> another<240> that very<846> day<2250>; for before<4391> they had been<4391><1510> enemies<2189> with each<848> other<848>.

Pilate<4091> summoned<4779> the chief<749> priests<749> and the rulers<758> and the people<2992>,

and said<3004> to them, "You brought<4374> this<3778> man<444> to me as one who incites<654> the people<2992> to rebellion<654>, and behold<2400>, having examined<350> Him before<1799> you, I have found<2147> no<3762> guilt<159> in this<3778> man<444> regarding the charges<2723> which<3739> you make<2723> against<2596> Him.

"No<235>, nor<3761> has Herod<2264>, for he sent<375> Him back<375> to us; and behold<2400>, nothing<3762> deserving<514> death<2288> has been<1510> done<4238> by Him.

"Therefore<3767> I will punish<3811> Him and release<630> Him."

[Now<1161> he was obliged<2192><318> to release<630> to them at the feast<1859> one<1520> prisoner.]

But they cried<349> out all<3826> together<3826>, saying<3004>, "Away<142> with this<3778> man<3778>, and release<630> for us Barabbas<912>!"

(He was one<3748> who<3748> had been thrown<906> into prison<5438> for an insurrection<4714> made<1096> in the city<4172>, and for murder<5408>.)

Pilate<4091>, wanting<2309> to release<630> Jesus<2424>, addressed<4377> them again<3825>,

but they kept on calling<2019> out, saying<3004>, "Crucify<4717>, crucify<4717> Him!"

And he said<3004> to them the third<5154> time<5154>, "Why<1063>, what<5101> evil<2556> has this<3778> man<3778> done<4160>? I have found<2147> in Him no<3762> guilt<159> demanding death<2288>; therefore<3767> I will punish<3811> Him and release<630> Him."

But they were insistent<1945>, with loud<3173> voices<5456> asking<154> that He be crucified<4717>. And their voices<5456> began to prevail<2729>.

And Pilate<4091> pronounced<1948> sentence<1948> that their demand<155> be granted<1096>.

And he released<630> the man they were asking<154> for who had been thrown<906> into prison<5438> for insurrection<4714> and murder<5408>, but he delivered<3860> Jesus<2424> to their will<2307>.

When<5613> they led<520> Him away<520>, they seized<1949> a man<5100>, Simon<4613> of Cyrene<2956>, coming<2064> in from the country<68>, and placed<2007> on him the cross<4716> to carry<5342> behind<3693> Jesus<2424>.

And following<190> Him was a large<4183> crowd<4128> of the people<2992>, and of women<1135> who<3739> were mourning<2875> and lamenting<2354> Him.

But Jesus<2424> turning<4762> to them said<3004>, "Daughters<2364> of Jerusalem<2419>, stop<3361> weeping<2799> for Me, but weep<2799> for yourselves<1438> and for your children<5043>.

"For behold<2400>, the days<2250> are coming<2064> when<1722><3739> they will say<3004>, 'Blessed<3107> are the barren<4723>, and the wombs<2836> that never<3756> bore<1080>, and the breasts<3149> that never<3756> nursed<5142>.'

"Then<5119> they will begin<757> TO SAY<3004> TO THE MOUNTAINS<3735>, 'FALL<4098> ON US,' AND TO THE HILLS<1015>, 'COVER<2572> US.'

"For if<1487> they do<4160> these<3778> things<3778> when<1722> the tree<3586> is green<5200>, what<5101> will happen<1096> when<1722> it is dry<3584>?"

Two<1417> others<2087> also<2532>, who were criminals<2557>, were being led<71> away<71> to be put<337> to death<337> with Him.

When<3753> they came<2064> to the place<5117> called<2564> The Skull<2898>, there<1563> they crucified<4717> Him and the criminals<2557>, one<3739> on the right<1188> and the other<3739> on the left<710>.

But Jesus<2424> was saying<3004>, "Father<3962>, forgive<863> them; for they do not know<3609> what<5101> they are doing<4160>." And they cast<906> lots<2819>, dividing<1266> up His garments<2440> among<1266> themselves.

And the people<2992> stood<2476> by, looking<2334> on. And even<2532> the rulers<758> were sneering<1592> at Him, saying<3004>, "He saved<4982> others<243>; let Him save<4982> Himself<1438> if<1487> this<3778> is the Christ<5547> of God<2316>, His Chosen<1588> One<1588>."

The soldiers<4757> also<2532> mocked<1702> Him, coming<4334> up to Him, offering<4374> Him sour<3690> wine<3690>,

and saying<3004>, "If<1487> You are the King<935> of the Jews<2453>, save<4982> Yourself<4572>!"

Now<1161> there was also<2532> an inscription<1923> above<1909> Him, "THIS<3778> IS THE KING<935> OF THE JEWS<2453>."

One<1520> of the criminals<2557> who were hanged<2910> there was hurling<987> abuse<987> at Him, saying<3004>, "Are You not the Christ<5547>? Save<4982> Yourself<4572> and us!"

But the other<2087> answered<611>, and rebuking<2008> him said<5346>, "Do you not even<3761> fear<5399> God<2316>, since<3754> you are under<1722> the same<846> sentence<2917> of condemnation<2917>?

"And we indeed<3303> are suffering justly<1346>, for we are receiving<618> what<3739> we deserve<514> for our deeds<3739><4238>; but this<3778> man<3778> has done<4238> nothing<3762> wrong<824>."

And he was saying<3004>, "Jesus<2424>, remember<3403> me when<3752> You come<2064> in Your kingdom<932>!"

And He said<3004> to him, "Truly<281> I say<3004> to you, today<4594> you shall be with Me in Paradise<3857>."

It was now<2235> about<5616> the sixth<1623> hour<5610>, and darkness<4655> fell<1096> over<1909> the whole<3650> land<1093> until<2193> the ninth<1729> hour<5610>,

because the sun<2246> was obscured<1587>; and the veil<2665> of the temple<3485> was torn<4977> in two<3319>.

And Jesus<2424>, crying<5455> out with a loud<3173> voice<5456>, said<3004>, "Father<3962>, INTO YOUR HANDS<5495> I COMMIT<3908> MY SPIRIT<4151>." Having said<3004> this<3778>, He breathed<1606> His last<1606>.

Now<1161> when the centurion<1543> saw<3708> what had happened<1096>, he began praising<1392> God<2316>, saying<3004>, "Certainly<3689> this<3778> man<444> was innocent<1342>."

And all<3956> the crowds<3793> who came<4836> together<4836> for this<3778> spectacle<2335>, when they observed<2334> what had happened<1096>, began to return<5290>, beating<5180> their breasts<4738>.

And all<3956> His acquaintances<1110> and the women<1135> who accompanied<4870> Him from Galilee<1056> were standing<2476> at a distance<3113>, seeing<3708> these<3778> things<3778>.

And a man<435> named<3686> Joseph<2501>, who was a member<1010> of the Council<1010>, a good<18> and righteous<1342> man<435>

(he had not consented<4784> to their plan<1012> and action<4234>), a man from Arimathea<707>, a city<4172> of the Jews<2453>, who<3739> was waiting<4327> for the kingdom<932> of God<2316>;

this<3778> man<3778> went<4334> to Pilate<4091> and asked<154> for the body<4983> of Jesus<2424>.

And he took<2507> it down<2507> and wrapped<1794> it in a linen<4616> cloth<4616>, and laid<5087> Him in a tomb<3418> cut<2991> into the rock<2991>, where<3757> no<3756> one<3762> had ever<3768> lain<2749>.

It was the preparation<3904> day<2250>, and the Sabbath<4521> was about<2020> to begin<2020>.

Now<1161> the women<1135> who<3748> had come<4905> with Him out of Galilee<1056> followed<2628>, and saw<2300> the tomb<3419> and how<5613> His body<4983> was laid<5087>.

Then<2532> they returned<5290> and prepared<2090> spices<759> and perfumes<3464>. And on the Sabbath<4521> they rested<2270> according<2596> to the commandment<1785>.
