Now <1161> all <3956> the tax collectors <5057> and <2532> sinners <268> were coming <1448> to hear <191> him <846>.
But <2532> the Pharisees <5330> and <2532> the experts in the law <1122> were complaining <1234>, “This man <3778> welcomes <4327> sinners <268> and <2532> eats <4906> with them <846>.”
So <1161> Jesus told <2036> them <846> this <3778> parable <3850>:
“Which <5101> one <444> of <1537> you <5216>, if he has <2192> a hundred <1540> sheep <4263> and <2532> loses <622> one <1520> of <1537> them <846>, would <2641> not <3756> leave <2641> the ninety-nine <1768> <1767> in <1722> the open pasture <2048> and <2532> go look for <4198> the one that is lost <622> until <2193> he finds <2147> it <846>?
Then <2532> when <2147> he has found <2147> it, he places <2007> it on <1909> his <846> shoulders <5606>, rejoicing <5463>.
Returning <2064> home <3624>, he calls together <4779> his friends <5384> and <2532> neighbors <1069>, telling <3004> them <846>, ‘Rejoice <4796> with me <3427>, because <3754> I have found <2147> my <3450> sheep <4263> that was lost <622>.’
I tell <3004> you <5213>, in the same way <3779> there will be <1510> more joy <5479> in <1722> heaven <3772> over <1909> one <1520> sinner <268> who repents <3340> than <2228> over <1909> ninety-nine <1768> <1767> righteous people <1342> who <3748> have <2192> no <3756> need <5532> to repent <3341>.
“Or <2228> what <5101> woman <1135>, if she has <2192> ten <1176> silver coins <1406> and loses <622> one <1520> of them, does <681> not <3780> light <681> a lamp <3088>, sweep <4563> the house <3614>, and <2532> search <2212> thoroughly <1960> until <2193> she finds <2147> it?
Then <2532> when <2147> she has found <2147> it, she calls together <4779> her friends <5384> and <2532> neighbors <1069>, saying <3004>, ‘Rejoice <4796> with me <3427>, for <3754> I have found <2147> the coin <1406> that <3739> I had lost <622>.’
In the same way <3779>, I tell <3004> you <5213>, there <1096> is joy <5479> in the presence <1799> of God’s <2316> angels <32> over <1909> one <1520> sinner <268> who repents <3340>.”
Then <1161> Jesus said <2036>, “A man <444> had <2192> two <1417> sons <5207>.
The younger <3501> of them <846> said <2036> to his father <3962>, ‘Father <3962>, give <1325> me <3427> the share <3313> of the estate <3776> that will belong to me.’ So <1161> he divided <1244> his assets between them <846>.
After <3326> a few <4183> days <2250>, the younger <3501> son <5207> gathered together <4863> all <3956> he had and left on a journey <589> to <1519> a distant <3117> country <5561>, and <2532> there <1563> he squandered <1287> his <846> wealth <3776> with a wild lifestyle <2198> <811>.
Then <1161> after he had spent <1159> everything <3956>, a <3042> severe <2478> famine <3042> took place <1096> in <2596> that <1565> country <5561>, and <2532> he <846> began <756> to be in need <5302>.
So <2532> he went <4198> and worked <2853> for one <1520> of the citizens <4177> of that <1565> country <5561>, who sent <3992> him <846> to <1519> his <846> fields <68> to feed <1006> pigs <5519>.
He was longing <1937> to eat <5526> the carob pods <2769> the pigs <5519> were eating <2068>, but <2532> no one <3762> gave <1325> him <846> anything.
But <1161> when <2064> he came <2064> to <1519> his senses <1438> he said <5346>, ‘How many <4214> of my <3450> father’s <3962> hired workers <3407> have <4052> food <740> enough to spare <4052>, but <1161> here <5602> I <1473> am dying <622> from hunger <3042>!
I will <4198> get up <450> and go <4198> to <4314> my <3450> father <3962> and <2532> say <2046> to him <846>, “Father <3962>, I have sinned <264> against <1519> heaven <3772> and <2532> against <1799> you <4675>.
I am <1510> no longer <3765> worthy <514> to be called <2564> your <4675> son <5207>; treat <4160> me <3165> like <5613> one <1520> of your <4675> hired workers <3407>.”’
So <2532> he got up <450> and went <2064> to <4314> his <1438> father <3962>. But <1161> while he was <568> still <2089> a long way <3112> from home his <846> father <3962> saw <1492> him <846>, and <2532> his heart went out <4697> to him; he ran <5143> and hugged <1968> <5137> his son <846> and <2532> kissed <2705> him <846>.
Then <1161> his son <5207> said <2036> to him <846>, ‘Father <3962>, I have sinned <264> against <1519> heaven <3772> and <2532> against <1799> you <4675>; I am <1510> no longer <3765> worthy <514> to be called <2564> your <4675> son <5207>.’
But <1161> the father <3962> said <2036> to <4314> his <846> slaves <1401>, ‘Hurry <5035>! Bring <1627> the best <4413> robe <4749>, and <2532> put <1746> it on <1746> him <846>! Put <1325> a ring <1146> on <1519> his <846> finger <5495> and <2532> sandals <5266> on <1519> his feet <4228>!
Bring <5342> the fattened <4618> calf <3448> and kill <2380> it! Let <5315> us eat <5315> and <2532> celebrate <2165>,
because <3754> this <3778> son <5207> of mine <3450> was <1510> dead <3498>, and <2532> is alive again <326>– he was <1510> lost <622> and <2532> is found <2147>!’ So <2532> they began <756> to celebrate <2165>.
“Now his <846> older <4245> son <5207> was <1510> in <1722> the field <68>. As <5613> he <1448> came <2064> and <2532> approached <1448> the house <3614>, he heard <191> music <4858> and <2532> dancing <5525>.
So <2532> he called <4341> one <1520> of the slaves <3816> and asked <4441> what <5101> was happening <302> <1510> <5023>.
The <1161> slave replied <2036>, ‘Your <4675> brother <80> has returned <2240>, and <2532> your <4675> father <3962> has killed <2380> the fattened <4618> calf <3448> because <3754> he got <618> his son <846> back <618> safe and sound <5198>.’
But <1161> the older son became angry <3710> and <2532> refused <3756> <2309> to go in <1525>. His <846> father <3962> came out <1831> and appealed <3870> to him <846>,
but <1161> he answered <2036> answered <611> his <846> father <3962>, ‘Look <2400>! These many <5118> years <2094> I have worked like a slave <1398> for you <4671>, and <2532> I never <3763> disobeyed <3928> your <4675> commands <1785>. Yet <2532> you <1325> never <3763> gave <1325> me <1698> even a goat <2056> so that <2443> I could celebrate <2165> with <3326> my <3450> friends <5384>!
But <1161> when <3753> this <3778> son <5207> of yours <4675> came back <2064>, who has devoured <2719> your <4675> assets <979> with <3326> prostitutes <4204>, you killed <2380> the fattened <4618> calf <3448> for him <846>!’
Then <1161> the father said <2036> to him <846>, ‘Son <5043>, you <4771> are <1510> always <3842> with <3326> me <1700>, and <2532> everything <3956> that belongs to me <1699> is <1510> yours <4674>.
It was appropriate <1163> to celebrate <2165> and <2532> be glad <5463>, for <3754> your <4675> brother <80> was <1510> dead <3498>, and <2532> is alive <2198>; he was lost <622> and <2532> is found <2147>.’”
