Now one <1520> day <2250>, as Jesus <846> was teaching <1321> the people <2992> in <1722> the temple courts <2411> and <2532> proclaiming the gospel <2097>, the chief priests <749> and <2532> the experts in the law <1122> with <4862> the elders <4245> came up <2186>
and <2532> said to <4314> him <846>, “Tell <2036> us <2254>: By <1722> what <4169> authority <1849> are you doing <4160> these things <5023>? Or <2228> who <5101> it is <1510> who gave <1325> you <4671> this <3778> authority <1849>?”
He answered <2036> answered <611> them <846>, “I will <2065> also ask <2065> you <5209> a question <3056>, and <2532> you tell <2036> me <3427>:
John’s <2491> baptism <908>– was it <1510> from <1537> heaven <3772> or <2228> from <1537> people <444>?”
So <1161> they discussed <4817> it with <4314> one another <1438>, saying <3004>, “If <1437> we say <2036>, ‘From <1537> heaven <3772>,’ he will say <2046>, ‘Why <5101> did you <4100> not <3756> believe <4100> him <846>?’
But <1161> if <1437> we say <2036>, ‘From <1537> people <444>,’ all <537> the people <2992> will stone <2642> us <2248>, because <1063> they are convinced <3982> that John <2491> was <1510> a prophet <4396>.”
So <2532> they replied <611> that they did not <3361> know <1492> where <4159> it came from.
Then <2532> Jesus <2424> said <2036> to them <846>, “Neither <3761> will <3004> I <1473> tell <3004> you <5213> by <1722> whose <4169> authority <1849> I do <4160> these things <5023>.”
Then <1161> he began <756> to <4314> tell <3004> the people <2992> this <3778> parable <3850>: “A man <444> planted <5452> a vineyard <290>, leased <1554> it <846> to tenant farmers <1092>, and <2532> went on a journey <589> for a <5550> long <2425> time <5550>.
When <2532> harvest time came <2540>, he sent <649> a slave <1401> to <4314> the tenants <1092> so that <2443> they would give <1325> him <846> his portion <2590> of the crop <290>. However <1161>, the tenants <1092> beat <1194> his slave and sent <1821> him <846> away <1821> empty-handed <2756>.
So <2532> he sent <3992> another <2087> slave <1401>. They beat <1194> this one too <2548>, treated <818> him outrageously <818>, and <2532> sent <1821> him away <1821> empty-handed <2756>.
So <2532> he sent still <4369> a third <5154>. They even wounded <5135> this one <5126>, and <2532> threw <1544> him out <1544>.
Then <1161> the owner <2962> of the vineyard <290> said <2036>, ‘What <5101> should I do <4160>? I will send <3992> my <3450> one dear <27> son <5207>; perhaps <2481> they <5126> will respect <1788> him.’
But <1161> when <1492> the tenants <1092> saw <1492> him <846>, they said <1260> to <4314> one another <240>, ‘This <3778> is <1510> the heir <2818>; let’s kill <615> him <846> so <2443> the inheritance <2817> will be <1096> ours <2257>!’
So <2532> they threw <1544> him <846> out of <1854> the vineyard <290> and killed <615> him. What <5101> then <3767> will <4160> the owner <2962> of the vineyard <290> do <4160> to them <846>?
He will come <2064> and <2532> destroy <622> those <5128> tenants <1092> and <2532> give <1325> the vineyard <290> to others <243>.” When the people heard <191> this, they said <3004>, “May this never <3361> happen <1096>!”
But <1161> Jesus looked straight <1689> at them <846> and said <2036>, “Then <3767> what <5101> is <1510> the meaning of that <5124> which <3739> is written <1125>: ‘The stone <3037> the builders rejected <593> has become <1096> the cornerstone <2776> <1137>’?
Everyone <3956> who falls <4098> on <1909> this <1565> stone <3037> will be broken to pieces <4917>, and the one <302> on <1909> whom <3739> it falls <4098> will be crushed <3039>.”
Then <2532> the experts in the law <1122> and <2532> the chief priests <749> wanted <2212> to arrest <1911> him <846> that <846> very hour <5610>, because <1063> they realized <1097> he had told <2036> this <3778> parable <3850> against <4314> them <846>. But <2532> they were afraid <5399> of the people <2992>.
Then <2532> they watched <3906> him carefully <3906> and sent <649> spies <1455> who pretended <5271> to be sincere <1342>. They wanted to take advantage <1949> of what he might say <3056> so that <5620> they could deliver <3860> him <846> up <3860> to the authority <1849> and <2532> jurisdiction <746> of the governor <2232>.
Thus <2532> they asked <1905> him <846>, “Teacher <1320>, we know <1492> that <3754> you speak <3004> and <2532> teach <1321> correctly <3723>, and <2532> show <2983> no <3756> partiality <4383>, but <235> teach <1321> the way <3598> of God <2316> in accordance with <1909> the truth <225>.
Is it right <1832> for us <2248> to pay <1325> the tribute tax <5411> to Caesar <2541> or <2228> not <3756>?”
But <1161> Jesus perceived <2657> their <846> deceit <3834> and said <2036> to <4314> them <846>,
“Show <1166> me <3427> a denarius <1220>. Whose <5101> image <1504> and <2532> inscription <1923> are on it?” They said <3004>, “Caesar’s <2541>.”
So <1161> he said <2036> to <4314> them <846>, “Then <5106> give <591> to Caesar <2541> the things that are Caesar’s <2541>, and <2532> to God <2316> the things that are God’s <2316>.”
Thus <2532> they were unable <2480> unable <3756> in the presence <1726> of the people <2992> to trap <1949> him with his own words <4487>. And <2532> stunned <2296> by <1909> his <846> answer <612>, they fell silent <4601>.
Now <1161> some <5100> Sadducees <4523> (who contend <3004> that there is <1510> no <3361> resurrection <386>) came <4334> to him <846>.
They asked <3004> him, “Teacher <1320>, Moses <3475> wrote <1125> for us <2254> that if <1437> a man’s <5100> brother <80> dies <599> leaving <2192> a wife <1135> but <3778> no children <815>, that man <1510> must marry <2983> the widow <80> <846> <1135> and <2532> father <1817> children <4690> for his <846> brother <80>.
Now there were <1510> seven <2033> brothers <80>. The first one <4413> married <2983> a woman <1135> and died <599> without children <815>.
and <2532> then the third <5154> married <2983> her <846>, and <1161> in this same way <5615> all seven <2033> died <599>, leaving <2641> no <3756> children <5043>.
Finally <5305> the woman <1135> died <599> too <2532>.
In <1722> the resurrection <386>, therefore <3767>, whose <5101> wife <1135> will <1096> the woman <1135> be <1096>? For <1063> all seven <2033> had <2192> married <1135> her <846>.”
So <2532> Jesus <2424> said <2036> to them <846>, “The people <5207> of this <5127> age <165> marry <1060> and <2532> are given in marriage <1061>.
But <1161> those who are regarded as worthy <2661> to share <5177> in that <1565> age <165> and <2532> in the resurrection <386> from <1537> the dead <3498> neither <3777> marry <1060> nor <3777> are given in marriage <1061>.
In fact, they can <1410> no <3761> longer <2089> die <599>, because <1063> they are <1510> equal to angels <2465> and <2532> are <1510> sons <5207> of God <2316>, since they are <1510> sons <5207> of the resurrection <386>.
But <1161> even <2532> Moses <3475> revealed <3377> that the dead <3498> are raised <1453> in the passage about <1909> the bush <942>, where <5613> he calls <3004> the Lord <2962> the God <2316> of Abraham <11> and <2532> the God <2316> of Isaac <2464> and <2532> the God <2316> of Jacob <2384>.
Now he is <1510> not <3756> God <2316> of <3498> the dead <3498>, but <235> of <2198> the living <2198>, for <1063> all <3956> live <2198> before him <846>.”
Then <1161> some <5100> of the experts in the law <1122> answered <3004>, “Teacher <1320>, you have spoken <2036> well <2573>!”
For <1063> they did <5111> not <3765> dare <5111> any longer <3765> to ask <1905> him <846> anything <3762>.
But <1161> he said <2036> to <4314> them <846>, “How <4459> is it that they say <3004> that the Christ <5547> is <1510> David’s <1138> son <5207>?
For <1063> David <1138> himself <846> says <3004> in <1722> the book <976> of Psalms <5568>, ‘The Lord <2962> said <2036> to <2962> my <3450> lord <2962>, “Sit <2521> at <1537> my <3450> right hand <1188>,
until <2193> I make <5087> your <4675> enemies <2190> a footstool <5286> for your <4675> feet <4228>.”’
If David <1138> then <3767> calls <2564> him <846> ‘Lord <2962>,’ how <4459> can he be <1510> his <846> son <5207>?”
As all <3956> the people <2992> were listening <191>, Jesus said <2036> to his disciples <3101>,
“Beware <4337> of <575> the experts in the law <1122>. They like walking around <4043> in <1722> long robes <4749>, and <2532> they love <5368> elaborate greetings <783> in <1722> the marketplaces <58> and <2532> the best seats <4410> in <1722> the synagogues <4864> and <2532> the places of honor <4411> at <1722> banquets <1173>.
They devour <2719> widows <5503>’ property <3614>, and <2532> as a show <4392> make <4336> long <3117> prayers <4336>. They will receive <2983> a more severe <4053> punishment <2917>.”
