As David's<1732> time<3117> to die<4191> drew<7126> near<7126>, he charged<6680> Solomon<8010> his son<1121>, saying<559>,
"I am going<1980> the way<1870> of all<3605> the earth<776>. Be strong<2388>, therefore, and show<1961> yourself a man<376>.
"Keep<8104> the charge<4931> of the LORD<3068> your God<430>, to walk<1980> in His ways<1870>, to keep<8104> His statutes<2708>, His commandments<4687>, His ordinances<4941>, and His testimonies<5715>, according to what is written<3789> in the Law<8451> of Moses<4872>, that you may succeed<7919> in all<3605> that you do<6213> and wherever<3605><834><8033> you turn<6437>,
so<4616> that the LORD<3068> may carry<6965> out His promise<1697> which<834> He spoke<1696> concerning<5921> me, saying<559>, 'If<518> your sons<1121> are careful<8104> of their way<1870>, to walk<1980> before<6440> Me in truth<571> with all<3605> their heart<3824> and with all<3605> their soul<5315>, you shall not lack<3772> a man<376> on the throne<3678> of Israel<3478>.'
"Now you also<1571> know<3045> what<834> Joab<3097> the son<1121> of Zeruiah<6870> did<6213> to me, what<834> he did<6213> to the two<8147> commanders<8269> of the armies<6635> of Israel<3478>, to Abner<74> the son<1121> of Ner<5369>, and to Amasa<6021> the son<1121> of Jether<3500>, whom he killed<2026>; he also shed<7760> the blood<1818> of war<4421> in peace<7965>. And he put<5414> the blood<1818> of war<4421> on his belt<2290> about his waist<4975>, and on his sandals<5275> on his feet<7272>.
"So act<6213> according to your wisdom<2451>, and do not let his gray<7872> hair<7872> go<3381> down<3381> to Sheol<7585> in peace<7965>.
"But show<6213> kindness<2617> to the sons<1121> of Barzillai<1271> the Gileadite<1569>, and let them be among those who eat<398> at your table<7979>; for they assisted<7126> me when I fled<1272> from Absalom<53> your brother<251>.
"Behold<2009>, there is with you Shimei<8096> the son<1121> of Gera<1617> the Benjamite<1145>, of Bahurim<980>; now it was he who cursed<7043> me with a violent<4834> curse<7045> on the day<3117> I went<1980> to Mahanaim<4266>. But when he came<3381> down<3381><7122> to me at the Jordan<3383>, I swore<7650> to him by the LORD<3068>, saying<559>, 'I will not put<4191> you to death<4191> with the sword<2719>.'
"Now<6258> therefore, do not let him go<5352> unpunished<5352>, for you are a wise<2450> man<376>; and you will know<3045> what<834> you ought to do<6213> to him, and you will bring<3381> his gray<7872> hair<7872> down<3381> to Sheol<7585> with blood<1818>."
Then David<1732> slept<7901> with his fathers<1> and was buried<6912> in the city<5892> of David<1732>.
The days<3117> that David<1732> reigned<4427> over<5921> Israel<3478> were forty<705> years<8141>: seven<7651> years<8141> he reigned<4427> in Hebron<2275> and thirty-three<7970><7969> years<8141> he reigned<4427> in Jerusalem<3389>.
And Solomon<8010> sat<3427> on the throne<3678> of David<1732> his father<1>, and his kingdom<4438> was firmly<3966> established<3559>.
Now Adonijah<138> the son<1121> of Haggith<2294> came<935> to Bathsheba<1339> the mother<517> of Solomon<8010>. And she said<559>, "Do you come<935> peacefully<7965>?" And he said<559>, "Peacefully<7965>."
Then he said<559>, "I have something<1697> to say to you." And she said<559>, "Speak<1696>."
So he said<559>, "You know<3045> that the kingdom<4410> was mine and that all<3605> Israel<3478> expected<7760><6440> me to be king<4427>; however, the kingdom<4410> has turned<5437> about<5437> and become<1961> my brother's<251>, for it was his from the LORD<3068>.
"Now<6258> I am making<7592> one<259> request<7596> of you; do not refuse<7725> me." And she said<559> to him, "Speak<1696>."
Then he said<559>, "Please<4994> speak<559> to Solomon<8010> the king<4428>, for he will not refuse<7725> you, that he may give<5414> me Abishag<49> the Shunammite<7767> as a wife<802>."
Bathsheba<1339> said<559>, "Very<2896> well<2896>; I will speak<1696> to the king<4428> for you."
So Bathsheba<1339> went<935> to King<4428> Solomon<8010> to speak<1696> to him for Adonijah<138>. And the king<4428> arose<6965> to meet<7122> her, bowed<7812> before her, and sat<3427> on his throne<3678>; then he had a throne<3678> set<7760> for the king's<4428> mother<517>, and she sat<3427> on his right<3225>.
Then she said<559>, "I am making<7592> one<259> small<6996> request<7596> of you; do not refuse<7725> me." And the king<4428> said<559> to her, "Ask<7592>, my mother<517>, for I will not refuse<7725> you."
So she said<559>, "Let Abishag<49> the Shunammite<7767> be given<5414> to Adonijah<138> your brother<251> as a wife<802>."
King<4428> Solomon<8010> answered<6030> and said<559> to his mother<517>, "And why<4100> are you asking<7592> Abishag<49> the Shunammite<7767> for Adonijah<138>? Ask<7592> for him also the kingdom<4410>--for he is my older<1419> brother<251>--even for him, for Abiathar<54> the priest<3548>, and for Joab<3097> the son<1121> of Zeruiah<6870>!"
Then King<4428> Solomon<8010> swore<7650> by the LORD<3068>, saying<559>, "May God<430> do<6213> so<3541> to me and more<3254> also<3541>, if<3588> Adonijah<138> has not spoken<1696> this<2088> word<1697> against his own life<5315>.
"Now<6258> therefore, as the LORD<3068> lives<2416>, who<834> has established<3559> me and set<3427> me on the throne<3678> of David<1732> my father<1> and who<834> has made<6213> me a house<1004> as He promised<1696>, surely<3588> Adonijah<138> shall be put<4191> to death<4191> today<3117>."
So King<4428> Solomon<8010> sent<7971> Benaiah<1141> the son<1121> of Jehoiada<3077>; and he fell<6293> upon him so that he died<4191>.
Then to Abiathar<54> the priest<3548> the king<4428> said<559>, "Go<1980> to Anathoth<6068> to your own field<7704>, for you deserve<376> to die<4194>; but I will not put<4191> you to death<4191> at this<2088> time<3117>, because<3588> you carried<5375> the ark<727> of the Lord<136> GOD<3068> before<6440> my father<1> David<1732>, and because<3588> you were afflicted<6031> in everything<3605> with which<834> my father<1> was afflicted<6031>."
So Solomon<8010> dismissed<1644> Abiathar<54> from being<1961> priest<3548> to the LORD<3068>, in order to fulfill<4390> the word<1697> of the LORD<3068>, which<834> He had spoken<1696> concerning<5921> the house<1004> of Eli<5941> in Shiloh<7887>.
Now the news<8052> came<935> to Joab<3097>, for Joab<3097> had followed<5186><310> Adonijah<138>, although he had not followed<310><5186> Absalom<53>. And Joab<3097> fled<5127> to the tent<168> of the LORD<3068> and took<2388> hold<2388> of the horns<7161> of the altar<4196>.
It was told<5046> King<4428> Solomon<8010> that Joab<3097> had fled<5127> to the tent<168> of the LORD<3068>, and behold<2009>, he is beside<681> the altar<4196>. Then Solomon<8010> sent<7971> Benaiah<1141> the son<1121> of Jehoiada<3077>, saying<559>, "Go<1980>, fall<6293> upon him."
So Benaiah<1141> came<935> to the tent<168> of the LORD<3068> and said<559> to him, "Thus<3541> the king<4428> has said<559>, 'Come<3318> out.'" But he said<559>, "No<3808>, for I will die<4191> here<6311>." And Benaiah<1141> brought<7725> the king<4428> word<1697> again<7725>, saying<559>, "Thus<3541> spoke<1696> Joab<3097>, and thus<3541> he answered<6030> me."
The king<4428> said<559> to him, "Do<6213> as he has spoken<1696> and fall<6293> upon him and bury<6912> him, that you may remove<5493> from me and from my father's<1> house<1004> the blood<1818> which<834> Joab<3097> shed<8210> without<2600> cause<2600>.
"The LORD<3068> will return<7725> his blood<1818> on his own head<7218>, because<834> he fell<6293> upon two<8147> men<376> more<4480> righteous<6662> and better<2896> than<4480> he and killed<2026> them with the sword<2719>, while my father<1> David<1732> did not know<3045> it: Abner<74> the son<1121> of Ner<5369>, commander<8269> of the army<6635> of Israel<3478>, and Amasa<6021> the son<1121> of Jether<3500>, commander<8269> of the army<6635> of Judah<3063>.
"So shall their blood<1818> return<7725> on the head<7218> of Joab<3097> and on the head<7218> of his descendants<2233> forever<5769>; but to David<1732> and his descendants<2233> and his house<1004> and his throne<3678>, may there be peace<7965> from the LORD<3068> forever<5704><5769>."
Then Benaiah<1141> the son<1121> of Jehoiada<3077> went<5927> up and fell<6293> upon him and put<4191> him to death<4191>, and he was buried<6912> at his own house<1004> in the wilderness<4057>.
The king<4428> appointed<5414> Benaiah<1141> the son<1121> of Jehoiada<3077> over<5921> the army<6635> in his place<8478>, and the king<4428> appointed<5414> Zadok<6659> the priest<3548> in the place<8478> of Abiathar<54>.
Now the king<4428> sent<7971> and called<7121> for Shimei<8096> and said<559> to him, "Build<1129> for yourself a house<1004> in Jerusalem<3389> and live<3427> there<8033>, and do not go<3318> out from there<8033> to any<575> place<575>.
"For on the day<3117> you go<3318> out and cross<5674> over<5674> the brook<5158> Kidron<6939>, you will know<3045> for certain<3045> that you shall surely<4191> die<4191>; your blood<1818> shall be on your own head<7218>."
Shimei<8096> then said<559> to the king<4428>, "The word<1697> is good<2896>. As my lord<113> the king<4428> has said<1696>, so<3651> your servant<5650> will do<6213>." So Shimei<8096> lived<3427> in Jerusalem<3389> many<7227> days<3117>.
But it came<1961> about at the end<7093> of three<7969> years<8141>, that two<8147> of the servants<5650> of Shimei<8096> ran<1272> away<1272> to Achish<397> son<1121> of Maacah<4601>, king<4428> of Gath<1661>. And they told<5046> Shimei<8096>, saying<559>, "Behold<2009>, your servants<5650> are in Gath<1661>."
Then Shimei<8096> arose<6965> and saddled<2280> his donkey<2543>, and went<1980> to Gath<1661> to Achish<397> to look<1245> for his servants<5650>. And Shimei<8096> went<1980> and brought<935> his servants<5650> from Gath<1661>.
It was told<5046> Solomon<8010> that Shimei<8096> had gone<1980> from Jerusalem<3389> to Gath<1661>, and had returned<7725>.
So the king<4428> sent<7971> and called<7121> for Shimei<8096> and said<559> to him, "Did I not make you swear<7650> by the LORD<3068> and solemnly<5749> warn<5749> you, saying<559>, 'You will know<3045> for certain<3045> that on the day<3117> you depart<3318> and go<1980> anywhere<575>, you shall surely<4191> die<4191>'? And you said<559> to me, 'The word<1697> which I have heard<8085> is good<2896>.'
"Why<4069> then have you not kept<8104> the oath<7621> of the LORD<3068>, and the command<4687> which<834> I have laid<6680> on you?"
The king<4428> also said<559> to Shimei<8096>, "You know<3045> all<3605> the evil<7463> which<834> you acknowledge<3045> in your heart<3824>, which<834> you did<6213> to my father<1> David<1732>; therefore the LORD<3068> shall return<7725> your evil<7463> on your own head<7218>.
"But King<4428> Solomon<8010> shall be blessed<1288>, and the throne<3678> of David<1732> shall be established<3559> before<6440> the LORD<3068> forever<5704><5769>."
So the king<4428> commanded<6680> Benaiah<1141> the son<1121> of Jehoiada<3077>, and he went<3318> out and fell<6293> upon him so that he died<4191>. Thus the kingdom<4467> was established<3559> in the hands<3027> of Solomon<8010>.
