Now Jehoram<3088> the son<1121> of Ahab<256> became<4427> king<4427> over<5921> Israel<3478> at Samaria<8111> in the eighteenth<8083><6240> year<8141> of Jehoshaphat<3092> king<4428> of Judah<3063>, and reigned<4427> twelve<8147><6240> years<8141>.
He did<6213> evil<7451> in the sight<5869> of the LORD<3068>, though<7534> not like his father<1> and his mother<517>; for he put<5493> away<5493> the sacred pillar<4676> of Baal<1168> which<834> his father<1> had made<6213>.
Nevertheless<7534>, he clung<1692> to the sins<2403> of Jeroboam<3379> the son<1121> of Nebat<5028>, which<834> he made Israel<3478> sin<2398>; he did not depart<5493> from them.
Now Mesha<4338> king<4428> of Moab<4124> was a sheep<5349> breeder<5349>, and used to pay<7725> the king<4428> of Israel<3478> 100,000 <3967><505> lambs<3733> and the wool<6785> of 100,000 <3967><505> rams<352>.
But when Ahab<256> died<4194>, the king<4428> of Moab<4124> rebelled<6586> against the king<4428> of Israel<3478>.
And King<4428> Jehoram<3088> went<3318> out of Samaria<8111> at that time<3117> and mustered<6485> all<3605> Israel<3478>.
Then he went<1980> and sent<7971> word to Jehoshaphat<3092> the king<4428> of Judah<3063>, saying<559>, "The king<4428> of Moab<4124> has rebelled<6586> against me. Will you go<1980> with me to fight<4421> against<413> Moab<4124>?" And he said<559>, "I will go<5927> up; I am as you are, my people<5971> as your people<5971>, my horses<5483> as your horses<5483>."
He said<559>, "Which<335><2088> way<1870> shall we go<5927> up?" And he answered<559>, "The way<1870> of the wilderness<4057> of Edom<112>."
So the king<4428> of Israel<3478> went<1980> with the king<4428> of Judah<3063> and the king<4428> of Edom<112>; and they made<5437> a circuit<5437> of seven<7651> days'<3117> journey<1870>, and there was no<3808> water<4325> for the army<4264> or for the cattle<929> that followed<7272> them.
Then the king<4428> of Israel<3478> said<559>, "Alas<162>! For the LORD<3068> has called<7121> these<428> three<7969> kings<4428> to give<5414> them into the hand<3027> of Moab<4124>."
But Jehoshaphat<3092> said<559>, "Is there<369> not a prophet<5030> of the LORD<3068> here<6311>, that we may inquire<1875> of the LORD<3068> by him?" And one<259> of the king<4428> of Israel's<3478> servants<5650> answered<6030> and said<559>, "Elisha<477> the son<1121> of Shaphat<8202> is here<6311>, who<834> used to pour<3332> water<4325> on the hands<3027> of Elijah<452>."
Jehoshaphat<3092> said<559>, "The word<1697> of the LORD<3068> is with him." So the king<4428> of Israel<3478> and Jehoshaphat<3092> and the king<4428> of Edom<112> went<3381> down<3381> to him.
Now Elisha<477> said<559> to the king<4428> of Israel<3478>, "What<4100> do I have to do with you? Go<1980> to the prophets<5030> of your father<1> and to the prophets<5030> of your mother<517>." And the king<4428> of Israel<3478> said<559> to him, "No<408>, for the LORD<3068> has called<7121> these<428> three<7969> kings<4428> together to give<5414> them into the hand<3027> of Moab<4124>."
Elisha<477> said<559>, "As the LORD<3068> of hosts<6635> lives<2416>, before<6440> whom<834> I stand<5975>, were it not that I regard<5375> the presence<6440> of Jehoshaphat<3092> the king<4428> of Judah<3063>, I would not look<5027> at you nor<518> see<7200> you.
"But now<6258> bring<3947> me a minstrel<5059>." And it came<1961> about, when the minstrel<5059> played<5059>, that the hand<3027> of the LORD<3068> came<1961> upon him.
He said<559>, "Thus<3541> says<559> the LORD<3068>, 'Make<6213> this<2088> valley<5158> full<1356> of trenches<1356>.'
"For thus<3541> says<559> the LORD<3068>, 'You shall not see<7200> wind<7307> nor<3808> shall you see<7200> rain<1653>; yet that valley<5158> shall be filled<4390> with water<4325>, so that you shall drink<8354>, both you and your cattle<4735> and your beasts<929>.
'This<2088> is but a slight<7043> thing<7043> in the sight<5869> of the LORD<3068>; He will also give<5414> the Moabites<4124> into your hand<3027>.
'Then you shall strike<5221> every<3605> fortified<4013> city<5892> and every<3605> choice<4004> city<5892>, and fell<5307> every<3605> good<2896> tree<6086> and stop<5640> all<3605> springs<4599> of water<4325>, and mar<3510> every<3605> good<2896> piece<2513> of land<2513> with stones<68>.'"
It happened<1961> in the morning<1242> about the time of offering<5927> the sacrifice<4503>, that behold<2009>, water<4325> came<935> by the way<1870> of Edom<112>, and the country<776> was filled<4390> with water<4325>.
Now all<3605> the Moabites<4124> heard<8085> that the kings<4428> had come<5927> up to fight<3898> against them. And all<3605> who were able to put<2296> on armor<2290> and older<4605> were summoned<6817> and stood<5975> on the border<1366>.
They rose<7925> early<7925> in the morning<1242>, and the sun<8121> shone<2224> on the water<4325>, and the Moabites<4124> saw<7200> the water<4325> opposite<4480><5048> them as red<122> as blood<1818>.
Then they said<559>, "This<2088> is blood<1818>; the kings<4428> have surely<2717> fought<2717> together<2717>, and they have slain<5221> one<376> another<7453>. Now<6258> therefore, Moab<4124>, to the spoil<7998>!"
But when they came<935> to the camp<4264> of Israel<3478>, the Israelites<3478> arose<6965> and struck<5221> the Moabites<4124>, so that they fled<5127> before<4480><6440> them; and they went<935> forward into the land, slaughtering<5221> the Moabites<4124>.
Thus they destroyed<2040> the cities<5892>; and each<376> one<376> threw<7993> a stone<68> on every<3605> piece<2513> of good<2896> land<2513> and filled<4390> it. So they stopped<5640> all<3605> the springs<4599> of water<4325> and felled<5307> all<3605> the good<2896> trees<6086>, until<5704> in Kir-hareseth<7025> only they left<7604> its stones<68>; however, the slingers<7051> went<5437> about<5437> it and struck<5221> it.
When the king<4428> of Moab<4124> saw<7200> that the battle<4421> was too<4480> fierce<2388> for him, he took<3947> with him 700 <7651><3967> men<376> who drew<8025> swords<2719>, to break<1234> through<1234> to the king<4428> of Edom<112>; but they could<3201> not.
Then he took<3947> his oldest<1060> son<1121> who<834> was to reign<4427> in his place<8478>, and offered<5927> him as a burnt<5930> offering<5930> on the wall<2346>. And there came<1961> great<1419> wrath<7110> against<5921> Israel<3478>, and they departed<5265> from him and returned<7725> to their own land<776>.
