Now the sons<1121> of the prophets<5030> said<559> to Elisha<477>, "Behold<2009> now<4994>, the place<4725> before<6440> you where<834><8033> we are living<3427> is too<4480> limited<6862> for us.
"Please<4994> let us go<1980> to the Jordan<3383> and each<376> of us take<3947> from there<8033> a beam<6982>, and let us make<6213> a place<4725> there<8033> for ourselves where<8033> we may live<3427>." So he said<559>, "Go<1980>."
Then one<259> said<559>, "Please<4994> be willing<2974> to go<1980> with your servants<5650>." And he answered<559>, "I shall go<1980>."
So he went<1980> with them; and when they came<935> to the Jordan<3383>, they cut<1504> down<1504> trees<6086>.
But as one<259> was felling<5307> a beam<6982>, the axe<1270> head<1270> fell<5307> into the water<4325>; and he cried<6817> out and said<559>, "Alas<162>, my master<113>! For it was borrowed<7592>."
Then the man<376> of God<430> said<559>, "Where<575> did it fall<5307>?" And when he showed<7200> him the place<4725>, he cut<7094> off<7094> a stick<6086> and threw<7993> it in there<8033>, and made the iron<1270> float<6687>.
He said<559>, "Take<7311> it up for yourself." So he put<7971> out his hand<3027> and took<3947> it.
Now the king<4428> of Aram<758> was warring<3898> against Israel<3478>; and he counseled<3289> with his servants<5650> saying<559>, "In such<6423> and such<492> a place<4725> shall be my camp<8466>."
The man<376> of God<430> sent<7971> word to the king<4428> of Israel<3478> saying<559>, "Beware<8104> that you do not pass<5674> this<2088> place<4725>, for the Arameans<758> are coming<5185> down<5185> there<8033>."
The king<4428> of Israel<3478> sent<7971> to the place<4725> about which<834> the man<376> of God<430> had told<559> him; thus he warned<2094> him, so that he guarded<8104> himself there<8033>, more than once<259> or twice<8147>.
Now the heart<3820> of the king<4428> of Aram<758> was enraged<5590> over<5921> this<2088> thing<1697>; and he called<7121> his servants<5650> and said<559> to them, "Will you tell<5046> me which<4310> of us is for the king<4428> of Israel<3478>?"
One<259> of his servants<5650> said<559>, "No<3808>, my lord<113>, O king<4428>; but Elisha<477>, the prophet<5030> who<834> is in Israel<3478>, tells<5046> the king<4428> of Israel<3478> the words<1697> that you speak<1696> in your bedroom<2315><4904>."
So he said<559>, "Go<1980> and see<7200> where<351> he is, that I may send<7971> and take<3947> him." And it was told<5046> him, saying<559>, "Behold<2009>, he is in Dothan<1886>."
He sent<7971> horses<5483> and chariots<7393> and a great<3515> army<2428> there<8033>, and they came<935> by night<3915> and surrounded<5362> the city<5892>.
Now when the attendant<8334> of the man<376> of God<430> had risen<6965> early<7925> and gone<3318> out, behold<2009>, an army<2428> with horses<5483> and chariots<7393> was circling<5437> the city<5892>. And his servant<5288> said<559> to him, "Alas<162>, my master<113>! What<351> shall we do<6213>?"
So he answered<559>, "Do not fear<3372>, for those who<834> are with us are more<7227> than<4480> those who<834> are with them."
Then Elisha<477> prayed<6419> and said<559>, "O LORD<3068>, I pray<4994>, open<6491> his eyes<5869> that he may see<7200>." And the LORD<3068> opened<6491> the servant's<5288> eyes<5869> and he saw<7200>; and behold<2009>, the mountain<2022> was full<4390> of horses<5483> and chariots<7393> of fire<784> all<5439> around<5439> Elisha<477>.
When they came<3381> down<3381> to him, Elisha<477> prayed<6419> to the LORD<3068> and said<559>, "Strike<5221> this<2088> people<1471> with blindness<5575>, I pray<4994>." So He struck<5221> them with blindness<5575> according to the word<1697> of Elisha<477>.
Then Elisha<477> said<559> to them, "This<2088> is not the way<1870>, nor<3808> is this<2090> the city<5892>; follow<1980><310> me and I will bring<1980> you to the man<376> whom<834> you seek<1245>." And he brought<1980> them to Samaria<8111>.
When they had come<935> into Samaria<8111>, Elisha<477> said<559>, "O LORD<3068>, open<6491> the eyes<5869> of these<428> men, that they may see<7200>." So the LORD<3068> opened<6491> their eyes<5869> and they saw<7200>; and behold<2009>, they were in the midst<8432> of Samaria<8111>.
Then the king<4428> of Israel<3478> when he saw<7200> them, said<559> to Elisha<477>, "My father<1>, shall I kill<5221> them? Shall I kill<5221> them?"
He answered<559>, "You shall not kill<5221> them. Would you kill<5221> those you have taken<7617> captive<7628> with your sword<2719> and with your bow<7198>? Set<7760> bread<3899> and water<4325> before<6440> them, that they may eat<398> and drink<8354> and go<1980> to their master<113>."
So he prepared<3738> a great<1419> feast<3740> for them; and when they had eaten<398> and drunk<8354> he sent<7971> them away<7971>, and they went<1980> to their master<113>. And the marauding<1416> bands<1416> of Arameans<758> did<3254> not come<935> again<5750><3254> into the land<776> of Israel<3478>.
Now it came<1961> about after<310> this<3651>, that Ben-hadad<1130> king<4428> of Aram<758> gathered<6908> all<3605> his army<4264> and went<5927> up and besieged<6696><5921> Samaria<8111>.
There was a great<1419> famine<7458> in Samaria<8111>; and behold<2009>, they besieged<6696><5921> it, until<5704> a donkey's<2543> head<7218> was sold<1961> for eighty<8084> shekels of silver<3701>, and a fourth<7255> of a kab<6894> of dove's<3123> dung<1686> for five<2568> shekels of silver<3701>.
As the king<4428> of Israel<3478> was passing<5674> by on the wall<2346> a woman<802> cried<6817> out to him, saying<559>, "Help<3467>, my lord<113>, O king<4428>!"
He said<559>, "If the LORD<3068> does not help<3467> you, from where<370> shall I help<3467> you? From the threshing<1637> floor<1637>, or<176> from the wine<3342> press<3342>?"
And the king<4428> said<559> to her, "What<4100> is the matter with you?" And she answered<559>, "This<2088> woman<802> said<559> to me, 'Give<5414> your son<1121> that we may eat<398> him today<3117>, and we will eat<398> my son<1121> tomorrow<4279>.'
"So we boiled<1310> my son<1121> and ate<398> him; and I said<559> to her on the next<312> day<3117>, 'Give<5414> your son<1121>, that we may eat<398> him'; but she has hidden<2244> her son<1121>."
When the king<4428> heard<8085> the words<1697> of the woman<802>, he tore<7167> his clothes<899>--now he was passing<5674> by on the wall<2346>--and the people<5971> looked<7200>, and behold<2009>, he had sackcloth<8242> beneath<1004> on his body<1320>.
Then he said<559>, "May God<430> do<6213> so<3541> to me and more<3254> also<3541>, if<518> the head<7218> of Elisha<477> the son<1121> of Shaphat<8202> remains<5975> on him today<3117>."
Now Elisha<477> was sitting<3427> in his house<1004>, and the elders<2205> were sitting<3427> with him. And the king sent<7971> a man<376> from his presence<6440>; but before<2962> the messenger<4397> came<935> to him, he said<559> to the elders<2205>, "Do you see<7200> how<3588> this<2088> son<1121> of a murderer<7523> has sent<7971> to take<5493> away<5493> my head<7218>? Look<7200>, when the messenger<4397> comes<935>, shut<5462> the door<1817> and hold<3905> the door<1817> shut<3905> against him. Is not the sound<6963> of his master's<113> feet<7272> behind<310> him?"
While he was still<5750> talking<1696> with them, behold<2009>, the messenger<4397> came<3381> down<3381> to him and he said<559>, "Behold<2009>, this<2088> evil<7463> is from the LORD<3068>; why<4100> should I wait<3176> for the LORD<3068> any<5750> longer<5750>?"
