In the first<259> year<8141> of Darius<1867> the son<1121> of Ahasuerus<325>, of Median<4074> descent<2233>, who<834> was made<4427> king<4427> over<5921> the kingdom<4438> of the Chaldeans<3778>--
in the first<259> year<8141> of his reign<4427>, I, Daniel<1840>, observed<995> in the books<5612> the number<4557> of the years<8141> which<834> was revealed as the word<1697> of the LORD<3068> to Jeremiah<3414> the prophet<5030> for the completion<4390> of the desolations<2723> of Jerusalem<3389>, namely, seventy<7657> years<8141>.
So I gave<5414> my attention<6440> to the Lord<136> God<430> to seek<1245> Him by prayer<8605> and supplications<8469>, with fasting<6685>, sackcloth<8242> and ashes<665>.
I prayed<6419> to the LORD<3068> my God<430> and confessed<3034> and said<559>, "Alas<577>, O Lord<136>, the great<1419> and awesome<3372> God<410>, who keeps<8104> His covenant<1285> and lovingkindness<2617> for those who love<157> Him and keep<8104> His commandments<4687>,
we have sinned<2398>, committed<5753> iniquity<5753>, acted<7561> wickedly<7561> and rebelled<4775>, even turning<5493> aside<5493> from Your commandments<4687> and ordinances<4941>.
"Moreover, we have not listened<8085> to Your servants<5650> the prophets<5030>, who<834> spoke<1696> in Your name<8034> to our kings<4428>, our princes<8269>, our fathers<1> and all<3605> the people<5971> of the land<776>.
"Righteousness<6666> belongs to You, O Lord<136>, but to us open<6440> shame<1322>, as it is this<2088> day<3117>--to the men<376> of Judah<3063>, the inhabitants<3427> of Jerusalem<3389> and all<3605> Israel<3478>, those who are nearby<7138> and those who are far<7350> away in all<3605> the countries<776> to which<834> You have driven<5080> them, because of their unfaithful<4604> deeds<4604> which<834> they have committed<4603> against You.
"Open<6440> shame<1322> belongs to us, O Lord<3068>, to our kings<4428>, our princes<8269> and our fathers<1>, because<834> we have sinned<2398> against You.
"To the Lord<136> our God<430> belong compassion<7356> and forgiveness<5547>, for we have rebelled<4775> against Him;
nor<3808> have we obeyed<8085> the voice<6963> of the LORD<3068> our God<430>, to walk<1980> in His teachings<8451> which<834> He set<5414> before<6440> us through<3027> His servants<5650> the prophets<5030>.
"Indeed all<3605> Israel<3478> has transgressed<5674> Your law<8451> and turned<5493> aside<5493>, not obeying<8085> Your voice<6963>; so the curse<423> has been poured<5413> out on us, along with the oath<7621> which<834> is written<3789> in the law<8451> of Moses<4872> the servant<5650> of God<430>, for we have sinned<2398> against Him.
"Thus He has confirmed<6965> His words<1697> which<834> He had spoken<1696> against<5921> us and against<5921> our rulers<8199> who<834> ruled<8199> us, to bring<935> on us great<1419> calamity<7463>; for under<8478> the whole<3605> heaven<8064> there has not been done<6213> anything like what<3512> was done<6213> to Jerusalem<3389>.
"As it is written<3789> in the law<8451> of Moses<4872>, all<3605> this<2088> calamity<7463> has come<935> on us; yet we have not sought<2470> the favor<2470><6440> of the LORD<3068> our God<430> by turning<7725> from our iniquity<5771> and giving<7919> attention<7919> to Your truth<571>.
"Therefore the LORD<3068> has kept<8245> the calamity<7463> in store<8245> and brought<935> it on us; for the LORD<3068> our God<430> is righteous<6662> with respect<5921> to all<3605> His deeds<4639> which<834> He has done<6213>, but we have not obeyed<8085> His voice<6963>.
"And now<6258>, O Lord<136> our God<430>, who<834> have brought<3318> Your people<5971> out of the land<776> of Egypt<4714> with a mighty<2389> hand<3027> and have made<6213> a name<8034> for Yourself, as it is this<2088> day<3117>--we have sinned<2398>, we have been<7561> wicked<7561>.
"O Lord<136>, in accordance with all<3605> Your righteous<6666> acts<6666>, let now<4994> Your anger<639> and Your wrath<2534> turn<7725> away<7725> from Your city<5892> Jerusalem<3389>, Your holy<6944> mountain<2022>; for because<3588> of our sins<2399> and the iniquities<5771> of our fathers<1>, Jerusalem<3389> and Your people<5971> have become a reproach<2781> to all<3605> those around<5439> us.
"So now<6258>, our God<430>, listen<8085> to the prayer<8605> of Your servant<5650> and to his supplications<8469>, and for Your sake<4616>, O Lord<136>, let Your face<6440> shine<215> on Your desolate<8076> sanctuary<4720>.
"O my God<430>, incline<5186> Your ear<241> and hear<8085>! Open<6491> Your eyes<5869> and see<7200> our desolations<8074> and the city<5892> which<834> is called<7121> by Your name<8034>; for we are not presenting<5307> our supplications<8469> before<6440> You on account<5921> of any merits<6666> of our own, but on account<5921> of Your great<7227> compassion<7356>.
"O Lord<136>, hear<8085>! O Lord<136>, forgive<5545>! O Lord<136>, listen<7181> and take<6213> action<6213>! For Your own sake<4616>, O my God<430>, do not delay<309>, because<3588> Your city<5892> and Your people<5971> are called<7121> by Your name<8034>."
Now while<5750> I was speaking<1696> and praying<6419>, and confessing<3034> my sin<2403> and the sin<2403> of my people<5971> Israel<3478>, and presenting<5307> my supplication<8467> before<6440> the LORD<3068> my God<430> in behalf<5921> of the holy<6944> mountain<2022> of my God<430>,
while<5750> I was still<5750> speaking<1696> in prayer<8605>, then the man<376> Gabriel<1403>, whom<834> I had seen<7200> in the vision<2377> previously<8462>, came<5060> to me in my extreme<3286> weariness<3288> about the time<6256> of the evening<6153> offering<4503>.
He gave<995> me instruction<995> and talked<1696> with me and said<559>, "O Daniel<1840>, I have now<6258> come<3318> forth<3318> to give<7919> you insight<7919> with understanding<998>.
"At the beginning<8462> of your supplications<8469> the command<1697> was issued<3318>, and I have come<935> to tell<5046> you, for you are highly<2536> esteemed<2536>; so give<995> heed<995> to the message<1697> and gain<995> understanding<995> of the vision<4758>.
"Seventy<7657> weeks<7620> have been decreed<2852> for your people<5971> and your holy<6944> city<5892>, to finish<3615> the transgression<6588>, to make<8552> an end<8552> of sin<2403>, to make<3722> atonement<3722> for iniquity<5771>, to bring<935> in everlasting<5769> righteousness<6664>, to seal<2856> up vision<2377> and prophecy<5030> and to anoint<4886> the most<6944> holy<6944> place.
"So you are to know<3045> and discern<7919> that from the issuing<4161> of a decree<1697> to restore<7725> and rebuild<1129> Jerusalem<3389> until<5704> Messiah<4899> the Prince<5057> there will be seven<7655> weeks<7620> and sixty-two<8346><8147> weeks<7620>; it will be built<1129> again<7725>, with plaza<7339> and moat<2742>, even in times<6256> of distress<6695>.
"Then after<310> the sixty-two<8346><8147> weeks<7620> the Messiah<4899> will be cut<3772> off<3772> and have<369> nothing<369>, and the people<5971> of the prince<5057> who is to come<935> will destroy<7843> the city<5892> and the sanctuary<6944>. And its end<7093> will come with a flood<7858>; even to the end<7093> there will be war<4421>; desolations<8074> are determined<2782>.
"And he will make<1396> a firm<1396> covenant<1285> with the many<7227> for one<259> week<7620>, but in the middle<2677> of the week<7620> he will put<7673> a stop<7673> to sacrifice<2077> and grain offering<4503>; and on the wing<3671> of abominations<8251> will come one who makes<8074> desolate<8074>, even until<5704> a complete<3617> destruction<3617>, one that is decreed<2782>, is poured<5413> out on the one who makes<8074> desolate<8074>."
