Now as Jacob<3290> went<1980> on his way<1870>, the angels<4397> of God<430> met<6293> him.
Jacob<3290> said<559> when<3512> he saw<7200> them, "This<2088> is God's<430> camp<4264>." So he named<7121><8034> that place<4725> Mahanaim<4266>.
Then Jacob<3290> sent<7971> messengers<4397> before<6440> him to his brother<251> Esau<6215> in the land<776> of Seir<8165>, the country<7704> of Edom<112>.
He also commanded<6680> them saying<559>, "Thus<3541> you shall say<559> to my lord<113> Esau<6215>: 'Thus<3541> says<559> your servant<5650> Jacob<3290>, "I have sojourned<1481> with Laban<3837>, and stayed<309> until<5704> now<6258>;
I have<1961> oxen<7794> and donkeys<2543> and flocks<6629> and male<5650> and female<8198> servants<5650><8198>; and I have sent<7971> to tell<5046> my lord<113>, that I may find<4672> favor<2580> in your sight<5869>."'"
The messengers<4397> returned<7725> to Jacob<3290>, saying<559>, "We came<935> to your brother<251> Esau<6215>, and furthermore<1571> he is coming<1980> to meet<7122> you, and four<702> hundred<3967> men<376> are with him."
Then Jacob<3290> was greatly<3966> afraid<3372> and distressed<6887>; and he divided<2673> the people<5971> who<834> were with him, and the flocks<6629> and the herds<1241> and the camels<1581>, into two<8147> companies<4264>;
for he said<559>, "If<518> Esau<6215> comes<935> to the one<259> company<4264> and attacks<5221> it, then the company<4264> which is left<7604> will escape<6413>."
Jacob<3290> said<559>, "O God<430> of my father<1> Abraham<85> and God<430> of my father<1> Isaac<3327>, O LORD<3068>, who said<559> to me, 'Return<7725> to your country<776> and to your relatives<4138>, and I will prosper<3190> you,'
I am unworthy<6994> of all<3605> the lovingkindness<2617> and of all<3605> the faithfulness<571> which<834> You have shown<6213> to Your servant<5650>; for with my staff<4731> only I crossed<5674> this<2088> Jordan<3383>, and now<6258> I have become<1961> two<8147> companies<4264>.
"Deliver<5337> me, I pray<4994>, from the hand<3027> of my brother<251>, from the hand<3027> of Esau<6215>; for I fear<3372> him, that he will come<935> and attack<5221> me and the mothers<517> with the children<1121>.
"For You said<559>, 'I will surely<3190> prosper<3190> you and make<7760> your descendants<2233> as the sand<2344> of the sea<3220>, which<834> is too<4480> great<7230> to be numbered<5608>.'"
So he spent<3885> the night<3915> there<8033>. Then he selected<3947> from what he had<935> with him a present<4503> for his brother<251> Esau<6215>:
two hundred<3967> female<5795> goats<5795> and twenty<6242> male<8495> goats<8495>, two hundred<3967> ewes<7353> and twenty<6242> rams<352>,
thirty<7970> milking<3243> camels<1581> and their colts<1121>, forty<705> cows<6510> and ten<6235> bulls<6499>, twenty<6242> female<860> donkeys<860> and ten<6235> male<5895> donkeys<5895>.
He delivered<5414> them into the hand<3027> of his servants<5650>, every<5739> drove<5739> by itself<905>, and said<559> to his servants<5650>, "Pass<5674> on before<6440> me, and put<7760> a space<7305> between<996> droves<5739>."
He commanded<6680> the one<7223> in front<7223>, saying<559>, "When<3588> my brother<251> Esau<6215> meets<6298> you and asks<7592> you, saying<559>, 'To whom<4310> do you belong, and where<575> are you going<1980>, and to whom<4310> do these<428> animals in front<6440> of you belong?'
then you shall say<559>, 'These belong to your servant<5650> Jacob<3290>; it is a present<4503> sent<7971> to my lord<113> Esau<6215>. And behold<2009>, he also<1571> is behind<310> us.'"
Then he commanded<6680> also<1571> the second<8145> and the third<7992>, and all<3605> those who followed<1980><310> the droves<5739>, saying<559>, "After this<2088> manner<1697> you shall speak<1696> to Esau<6215> when you find<4672> him;
and you shall say<559>, 'Behold<2009>, your servant<5650> Jacob<3290> also<1571> is behind<310> us.'" For he said<559>, "I will appease<3722><6440> him with the present<4503> that goes<1980> before<6440> me. Then afterward<310><3651> I will see<7200> his face<6440>; perhaps<194> he will accept<5375><6440> me."
So the present<4503> passed<5674> on before<5921><6440> him, while he himself<1931> spent<3885> that night<3915> in the camp<4264>.
Now he arose<6965> that same<1931> night<3915> and took<3947> his two<8147> wives<802> and his two<8147> maids<8198> and his eleven<259><6240> children<3206>, and crossed<5674> the ford<4569> of the Jabbok<2999>.
He took<3947> them and sent<5674> them across<5674> the stream<5158>. And he sent<5674> across<5674> whatever<834> he had.
Then Jacob<3290> was left<3498> alone<905>, and a man<376> wrestled<79> with him until<5704> daybreak<7837>.
When he saw<7200> that he had not prevailed<3201> against him, he touched<5060> the socket<3709> of his thigh<3409>; so the socket<3709> of Jacob's<3290> thigh<3409> was dislocated<3363> while he wrestled<79> with him.
Then he said<559>, "Let<7971> me go<7971>, for the dawn<7837> is breaking<5927>." But he said<559>, "I will not let<7971> you go<7971> unless<3588><518> you bless<1288> me."
So he said<559> to him, "What<4100> is your name<8034>?" And he said<559>, "Jacob<3290>."
He said<559>, "Your name<8034> shall no<3808> longer<5750> be Jacob<3290>, but Israel<3478>; for you have striven<8280> with God<430> and with men<376> and have prevailed<3201>."
Then Jacob<3290> asked<7592> him and said<559>, "Please<4994> tell<5046> me your name<8034>." But he said<559>, "Why<4100> is it that you ask<7592> my name<8034>?" And he blessed<1288> him there<8033>.
So Jacob<3290> named<7121><8034> the place<4725> Peniel<6439>, for he said, "I have seen<7200> God<430> face<6440> to face<6440>, yet my life<5315> has been preserved<5337>."
Now the sun<8121> rose<2224> upon him just<3512> as he crossed<5674> over<5674> Penuel<6439>, and he was limping<6760> on his thigh<3409>.
Therefore<5921><3651>, to this<2088> day<3117> the sons<1121> of Israel<3478> do not eat<398> the sinew<1517> of the hip<5384> which<834> is on the socket<3709> of the thigh<3409>, because<3588> he touched<5060> the socket<3709> of Jacob's<3290> thigh<3409> in the sinew<1517> of the hip<5384>.
