The word<1697> which<834> came<1961> to Jeremiah<3414> from the LORD<3068> saying<559>,
"Arise<6965> and go<3381> down<3381> to the potter's<3335> house<1004>, and there<8033> I will announce<8085> My words<1697> to you."
Then I went<3381> down<3381> to the potter's<3335> house<1004>, and there<2009> he was, making<6213> something<4399> on the wheel<70>.
But the vessel<3627> that he was making<6213> of clay<2563> was spoiled<7843> in the hand<3027> of the potter<3335>; so he remade<7725><6213> it into another<312> vessel<3627>, as it pleased<5869><3474> the potter<3335> to make<6213>.
Then the word<1697> of the LORD<3068> came<1961> to me saying<559>,
"Can<3201> I not, O house<1004> of Israel<3478>, deal<6213> with you as this<2088> potter<3335> does?" declares<5002> the LORD<3068>. "Behold<2009>, like the clay<2563> in the potter's<3335> hand<3027>, so<3651> are you in My hand<3027>, O house<1004> of Israel<3478>.
"At one moment<7281> I might speak<1696> concerning<5921> a nation<1471> or concerning<5921> a kingdom<4467> to uproot<5428>, to pull<5422> down<5422>, or to destroy<6> it;
if that nation<1471> against<5921> which<834> I have spoken<1696> turns<7725> from its evil<7463>, I will relent<5162> concerning<5921> the calamity<7463> I planned<2803> to bring<6213> on it.
"Or at another moment<7281> I might speak<1696> concerning<5921> a nation<1471> or concerning<5921> a kingdom<4467> to build<1129> up or to plant<5193> it;
if it does<6213> evil<7451> in My sight<5869> by not obeying<8085> My voice<6963>, then I will think<5162> better<5162> of the good<2899> with which<834> I had promised<559> to bless<3190> it.
"So now<6258> then, speak<559> to the men<376> of Judah<3063> and against<5921> the inhabitants<3427> of Jerusalem<3389> saying<559>, 'Thus<3541> says<559> the LORD<3068>, "Behold<2009>, I am fashioning<3335> calamity<7463> against<5921> you and devising<2803> a plan<4284> against<5921> you. Oh<4994> turn<7725> back<7725>, each<376> of you from his evil<7451> way<1870>, and reform<3190> your ways<1870> and your deeds<4611>."'
"But they will say<559>, 'It's hopeless<2976>! For we are going<1980> to follow<310><1980> our own plans<4284>, and each<376> of us will act<6213> according to the stubbornness<8307> of his evil<7451> heart<3820>.'
"Therefore<3651> thus<3541> says<559> the LORD<3068>, 'Ask<7592> now<4994> among the nations<1471>, Who<4310> ever heard<8085> the like of this<428>? The virgin<1330> of Israel<3478> Has done<6213> a most<3966> appalling<8186> thing<8186>.
'Does the snow<7950> of Lebanon<3844> forsake<5800> the rock<6697> of the open country<7706>? Or<518> is the cold<7119> flowing<5140> water<4325> from a foreign<2114> land ever snatched<5428> away<5428>?
'For My people<5971> have forgotten<7911> Me, They burn<6999> incense<6999> to worthless<7723> gods And they have stumbled<3782> from their ways<1870>, From the ancient<5769> paths<7635>, To walk<1980> in bypaths<5410>, Not on a highway<1870><5549>,
To make<7760> their land<776> a desolation<8047>, An object of perpetual<5769> hissing<8292>; Everyone<3605> who passes<5674> by it will be astonished<8074> And shake<5110> his head<7218>.
'Like an east<6921> wind<7307> I will scatter<6327> them Before<6440> the enemy<340>; I will show<7200> them My back<6203> and not My face<6440> In the day<3117> of their calamity<343>.'"
Then they said<559>, "Come<1980> and let us devise<2803> plans<4284> against<5921> Jeremiah<3414>. Surely<3588> the law<8451> is not going to be lost<6> to the priest<3548>, nor<3808> counsel<6098> to the sage<2450>, nor<3808> the divine word<1697> to the prophet<5030>! Come<1980> on and let us strike<5221> at him with our tongue<3956>, and let us give<7181> no<408> heed<7181> to any<3605> of his words<1697>."
Do give<7181> heed<7181> to me, O LORD<3068>, And listen<8085> to what<6963> my opponents<3401> are saying<6963>!
Should good<2899> be repaid<7999> with evil<7463>? For they have dug<3738> a pit<7745> for me. Remember<2142> how I stood<5975> before<6440> You To speak<1696> good<2899> on their behalf<5921>, So as to turn<7725> away<7725> Your wrath<2534> from them.
Therefore<3651>, give<5414> their children<1121> over to famine<7458> And deliver<5064> them up to the power<3027> of the sword<2719>; And let their wives<802> become<1961> childless<7909> and widowed<490>. Let their men<376> also be smitten<2026> to death<4194>, Their young<970> men<970> struck<5221> down<5221> by the sword<2719> in battle<4421>.
May an outcry<2201> be heard<8085> from their houses<1004>, When<3588> You suddenly<6597> bring<935> raiders<1416> upon them; For they have dug<3738> a pit<7745> to capture<3920> me And hidden<2934> snares<6341> for my feet<7272>.
Yet You, O LORD<3068>, know<3045> All<3605> their deadly<4194> designs<6098> against<5921> me; Do not forgive<3722> their iniquity<5771> Or blot<4229> out their sin<2403> from Your sight<6440>. But may they be overthrown<3782> before<6440> You; Deal<6213> with them in the time<6256> of Your anger<639>!
