 <<  1 Samuel 10 >>

Then Samuel <08050> took <03947> a small container <06378> of olive oil <08081> and poured <03332> it on <05921> Saul’s head <07218>. Samuel kissed <05401> him and said <0559>, “The Lord has chosen you to lead his people Israel! You will rule over the Lord’s people and you will deliver them from the power of the enemies who surround them. This will be your sign that <03588> the Lord <03068> has chosen <04886> you as leader <05057> over <05921> his inheritance <05159>.

When you leave <01980> me <05978> today <03117>, you will find <04672> two <08147> men <0376> near <05973> Rachel’s <07354> tomb <06900> at Zelzah <06766> on Benjamin’s <01144> border <01366>. They will say <0559> to <0413> you, ‘The donkeys <0860> you have gone <01980> looking for <01245> have been found <04672>. Your father <01> is no longer <05203> concerned about <01697> the donkeys <0860> but has become anxious <01672> about you two! He is asking <0559>, “What <04100> should I do <06213> about my son <01121>?”’

“As you continue <02498> on <01973> from there <08033>, you will come <0935> to <05704> the tall tree <0436> of Tabor <08396>. At that point <08033> three <07969> men <0582> who are going up <05927> to <0413> God <0430> at Bethel <01008> will meet <04672> you. One <0259> of them will be carrying <05375> three <07969> young goats <01423>, one <0259> of them will be carrying <05375> three <07969> round loaves <03603> of bread <03899>, and one <0259> of them will be carrying <05375> a container <05035> of wine <03196>.

They will ask <07592> you how you’re doing and will give <05414> you two <08147> loaves of bread <03899>. You will accept <03947> them.

Afterward <03651> <0310> you will go <0935> to Gibeah <01389> of God <0430>, where <0834> there <08033> are Philistine <06430> officials <05333>. When <01961> you enter <0935> the town <05892>, you will meet <06293> a company <02256> of prophets <05030> coming down <03381> from the high place <01116>. They will have harps <05035>, tambourines <08596>, flutes <02485>, and lyres <03658>, and they <01992> will be prophesying <05012>.

Then the spirit <07307> of the Lord <03068> will rush <06743> upon <05921> you and you will prophesy <05012> with <05973> them. You will be changed <02015> into a different <0312> person <0376>.

“When <03588> these <0428> signs <0226> have taken place <0935>, do <06213> whatever <0834> your hand <03027> finds <04672> to do, for <03588> God <0430> will be with <05973> you.

You will go down <03381> to Gilgal <01537> before <06440> me. I <0595> am going to join <03381> you there to offer <05927> burnt offerings <05930> and to make <02076> peace offerings <08002>. You should wait <03176> for seven <07651> days <03117>, until <05704> I arrive <0935> and tell <03045> you what <0834> to do <06213>.”

As Saul turned <07926> <06437> to leave <01980> Samuel <08050>, God <0430> changed <02015> his inmost <03820> person <0312>. All <03605> these <0428> signs <0226> happened <0935> on that very day <03117>.

When Saul and his servant arrived <0935> at Gibeah <01389>, a company <02256> of prophets <05030> was coming out <07122> to meet him. Then the spirit <07307> of God <0430> rushed <06743> upon <05921> Saul and he prophesied <05012> among <08432> them.

When <01961> everyone <03605> who had known <03045> him previously <08032> <0865> saw <07200> him prophesying <05012> with <05973> the prophets <05030>, the people <05971> all asked <0559> one <0376> another <07453>, “What <04100> on earth has happened <01961> to the son <01121> of Kish <07027>? Does even <01571> Saul <07586> belong with the prophets <05030>?”

A man <0376> who was from there <08033> replied <06030>, “And who <04310> is their father <01>?” Therefore <03651> <05921> this became <01961> a proverb <04912>: “Is even <01571> Saul <07586> among the prophets <05030>?”

When Saul had finished <03615> prophesying <05012>, he went <0935> to the high place <01116>.

Saul’s <07586> uncle <01730> asked <0559> him and his servant <05288>, “Where <0575> did you go <01980>?” Saul replied <0559>, “To look <01245> for the donkeys <0860>. But when we realized <07200> they were lost <0369>, we went <0935> to <0413> Samuel <08050>.”

Saul’s <07586> uncle <01730> said <0559>, “Tell <05046> me what <04100> Samuel <08050> said <0559> to you.”

Saul <07586> said <0559> to <0413> his uncle <01730>, “He assured <05046> <05046> us that <03588> the donkeys <0860> had been found <04672>.” But Saul did not <03808> tell <05046> him what <0834> Samuel <08050> had said <0559> about the matter <01697> of kingship <04410>.

Then Samuel <08050> called <06817> the people <05971> together before <0413> the Lord <03068> at Mizpah <04709>.

He said <0559> to <0413> the Israelites <03478> <01121>, “This is what <03541> the Lord <03068> God <0430> of Israel <03478> says <0559>, ‘I <0595> brought <05927> Israel <03478> up <05927> from Egypt <04714> and I delivered <05337> you from the power <03027> of the Egyptians <04714> and from the power <03027> of all <03605> the kingdoms <04467> that oppressed <03905> you.

But today <03117> you <0859> have rejected <03988> your God <0430> who <0834> saves <03467> you <01931> from all <03605> your trouble <07451> and distress <06869>. You have said <0559>, “No! Appoint <07760> a king <04428> over <05921> us.” Now <06258> take <03320> your positions before <06440> the Lord <03068> by your tribes <07626> and by your clans <0505>.’”

Then Samuel <08050> brought <07126> all <03605> the tribes <07626> of Israel <03478> near, and the tribe <07626> of Benjamin <01144> was chosen <03920> by lot.

Then he brought <07126> the tribe <07626> of Benjamin <01144> near by its families <04940>, and the family <04940> of Matri <04309> was chosen <03920> by lot. At last Saul <07586> son <01121> of Kish <07027> was chosen <03920> by lot. But when they looked for <01245> him, he was nowhere <03808> to be found <04672>.

So they inquired <07592> again <05750> of the Lord <03068>, “Has the man <0376> arrived <0935> here <01988> yet?” The Lord <03068> said <0559>, “He <01931> has hidden <02244> himself among <0413> the equipment <03627>.”

So they ran <07323> and brought <03947> him from there <08033>. When he took <03320> his position <03320> among <08432> the people <05971>, he stood head <01361> and shoulders <07926> above <04605> them all <03605>.

Then Samuel <08050> said <0559> to <0413> all <03605> the people <05971>, “Do you see <07200> the one whom <0834> the Lord <03068> has chosen <0977>? Indeed <03588>, there is no one <0369> like <03644> him among all <03605> the people <05971>!” All <03605> the people <05971> shouted <07321> out, “Long live <02421> the king <04428>!”

Then Samuel <08050> talked <01696> to <0413> the people <05971> about how the kingship <04410> would work <04941>. He wrote <03789> it all down <03789> on a scroll <05612> and set <03240> it before <06440> the Lord <03068>. Then Samuel <08050> sent <07971> all <03605> the people <05971> away <07971> to their homes <01004>.

Even <01571> Saul <07586> went <01980> to his home <01004> in Gibeah <01390>. With <05973> him went <01980> some brave men <02428> whose <0834> hearts <03820> God <0430> had touched <05060>.

But some wicked <01100> men <01121> said <0559>, “How <04100> can this <02088> man save <03467> us?” They despised <0959> him and did not <03808> even bring <0935> him a gift <04503>. But Saul said nothing <02790> about it.
