Dual Panel1Then the people <0376> of Kiriath Jearim <07157> came <0935> and took <05927> the ark <0727> of the Lord <03068>; they brought <0935> it to <0413> the house <01004> of Abinadab <041> located on the hill <01389>. They consecrated <06942> Eleazar <0499> his son <01121> to guard <08104> the ark <0727> of the Lord <03068>.
2It was <01961> quite <03117> a long <07235> time <03117>– some <01961> twenty <06242> years <08141> in all– that the ark <0727> stayed <03427> at Kiriath Jearim <07157>. All <03605> the people <01004> of Israel <03478> longed <05091> for <0310> the Lord <03068>.
3Samuel <08050> said <0559> to <0413> all <03605> the people <01004> of Israel <03478>, “If <0518> you <0859> are really turning <07725> to <0413> the Lord <03068> with all <03605> your hearts <03824>, remove <05493> from among <08432> you the foreign <05236> gods <0430> and the images of Ashtoreth <06252>. Give <03559> your hearts <03824> to <0413> the Lord <03068> and serve <05647> only <0905> him. Then he will deliver <05337> you from the hand <03027> of the Philistines <06430>.”
4So the Israelites <03478> <01121> removed <05493> the Baals <01168> and images of Ashtoreth <06252>. They served <05647> only <0905> the Lord <03068>.
5Then Samuel <08050> said <0559>, “Gather <06908> all <03605> Israel <03478> to Mizpah <04709>, and I will pray <06419> to <0413> the Lord <03068> on <01157> your behalf <01157>.”
6After they had assembled <06908> at Mizpah <04709>, they drew <07579> water <04325> and poured <08210> it out <08210> before <06440> the Lord <03068>. They fasted <06684> on that day <03117>, and they confessed <0559> there <08033>, “We have sinned <02398> against the Lord <03068>.” So Samuel <08050> led <08199> the people <01121> of Israel <03478> at Mizpah <04709>.
7When the Philistines <06430> heard <08085> that <03588> the Israelites <03478> <01121> had gathered <06908> at Mizpah <04709>, the leaders <05633> of the Philistines <06430> went up <05927> against <0413> Israel <03478>. When the Israelites <03478> <01121> heard <08085> about this, they were afraid <03372> of <06440> the Philistines <06430>.
8The Israelites <03478> <01121> said <0559> to <0413> Samuel <08050>, “Keep <02790> <0408> crying out <02199> to <0413> the Lord <03068> our God <0430> so that he may save <03467> us from the hand <03027> of the Philistines <06430>!”
9So Samuel <08050> took <03947> a <0259> nursing <02461> lamb <02924> and offered <05927> it as a whole <03632> burnt offering <05930> to the Lord <03068>. Samuel <08050> cried out <02199> to <0413> the Lord <03068> on Israel’s <03478> behalf <01157>, and the Lord <03068> answered <06030> him.
10As Samuel <08050> was <01961> offering <05927> burnt offerings <05930>, the Philistines <06430> approached <05066> to do battle <04421> with Israel <03478>. But on that day <03117> the Lord <03068> thundered <07481> loudly <01419> <06963> against <05921> the Philistines <06430>. He <01931> caused <02000> them to panic <02000>, and they were defeated <05062> by <06440> Israel <03478>.
11Then the men <0582> of Israel <03478> left <03318> Mizpah <04709> and chased <07291> the Philistines <06430>, striking <05221> them down <05221> all the way to <05704> an area below <08478> Beth Car <01033>.
12Samuel <08050> took <03947> a <0259> stone <068> and placed <07760> it between <0996> <0996> Mizpah <04709> and Shen <08129>. He named <08034> <07121> it Ebenezer <072>, saying <0559>, “Up to <05704> here <02008> the Lord <03068> has helped <05826> us.”
13So the Philistines <06430> were defeated <03665>; they did not <03808> invade <0935> Israel <03478> again <05750>. The hand <03027> of the Lord <03068> was <01961> against the Philistines <06430> all <03605> the days <03117> of Samuel <08050>.
14The cities <05892> that <0834> the Philistines <06430> had captured <03947> from Israel <03478> were returned <07725> to Israel <03478>, from Ekron <06138> to <05704> Gath <01661>. Israel <03478> also delivered <05337> their territory <01366> from the control <03027> of the Philistines <06430>. There was <01961> also peace <07965> between <0996> Israel <03478> and the Amorites <0567>.
15So Samuel <08050> led <08199> Israel <03478> all <03605> the days <03117> of his life <02416>.
16Year <08141> <01767> after year <08141> <01767> he used to travel <01980> the circuit <05437> of Bethel <01008>, Gilgal <01537>, and Mizpah <04709>; he used to judge <08199> Israel <03478> in all <03605> of these <0428> places <04725>.
17Then he would return <08666> to Ramah <07414>, because <03588> his home <01004> was there <08033>. He also judged <08199> Israel <03478> there <08033> and built <01129> an altar <04196> to the Lord <03068> there <08033>.
