Joash <03101> was seven <07651> years <08141> old <01121> when he began to reign. He reigned <04427> for forty <0705> years <08141> in Jerusalem <03389>. His mother <0517> was Zibiah <06645>, who was from Beer Sheba <0884>.
Joash <03101> did what the Lord <03068> approved <03477> throughout <03605> the lifetime <03117> of Jehoiada <03077> the priest <03548>.
Jehoiada <03077> chose <05375> two <08147> wives <0802> for him who gave <03205> him sons <01121> and daughters <01323>.
Joash <03101> was determined <03820> <05973> <01961> to repair <02318> the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>.
He assembled <06908> the priests <03548> and Levites <03881> and ordered <0559> them, “Go out <03318> to the cities <05892> of Judah <03063> and collect <06908> the annual <08141> <08141> <01767> quota of silver <03701> from all <03605> Israel <03478> for repairs <02388> on the temple <01004> of your God <0430>. Be quick <04116> about it <01697>!” But the Levites <03881> delayed <04116> <03808>.
So the king <04428> summoned <07121> Jehoiada <03077> the chief <07218> priest, and said <0559> to him, “Why <04069> have you not <03808> made <01875> the Levites <03881> collect <0935> from Judah <03063> and Jerusalem <03389> the tax <04864> authorized by Moses <04872> the Lord’s <03068> servant <05650> and by the assembly <06951> of Israel <03478> at the tent <0168> containing the tablets of the law <05715>?”
(Wicked <04849> Athaliah <06271> and her sons <01121> had broken into <06555> God’s <0430> temple <01004> and <01571> used all <03605> the holy items <06944> of the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004> in their worship <06213> of the Baals <01168>.)
The king <04428> ordered <0559> a <0259> chest <0727> to be made <06213> and placed <05414> outside <02351> the gate <08179> of the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>.
An edict <06963> was sent <05414> throughout Judah <03063> and Jerusalem <03389> requiring the people to bring <0935> to the Lord <03068> the tax <04864> that Moses <04872>, God’s <0430> servant <05650>, imposed on <05921> Israel <03478> in the wilderness <04057>.
All <03605> the officials <08269> and all <03605> the people <05971> gladly <08055> brought <0935> their silver and threw <07993> it into the chest <0727> until <05704> it was full <03615>.
Whenever the Levites <03881> brought <0935> the chest <0727> to <0413> the royal <04428> accountant <06486> and they saw <07200> there was a lot of <07227> silver <03701>, the royal <04428> scribe <05608> and the accountant <06496> of the high <07218> priest <03548> emptied <06168> the chest <0727> and then took <05375> it back <07725> to <0413> its place <04725>. They went through <06213> this routine <03117> every day <03117> and collected <0622> a large amount <07230> of silver <03701>.
The king <04428> and Jehoiada <03077> gave <05414> it to <0413> the construction <05656> foremen <04399> assigned <06213> to the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>. They hired <07936> carpenters <02672> and craftsmen <02796> to repair <02318> the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>, as well as <01571> those skilled in working <02796> with iron <01270> and bronze <05178> to restore <02388> the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>.
They worked <04399> <06213> hard and made <06213> the repairs <03027> <04399> <0724>. They followed <05921> the measurements specified <04971> for God’s <0430> temple <01004> and restored <05975> it.
When they were finished <03615>, they brought <0935> the rest <07605> of the silver <03701> to the king <04428> and Jehoiada <03077>. They used it to make <06213> items <03627> for the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>, including items <03627> used in the temple service <08335> and for burnt sacrifices, pans <03709>, and various other <03627> gold <02091> and silver <03701> items. Throughout <03605> Jehoiada’s <03077> lifetime <03117>, burnt sacrifices <05930> were offered regularly <08548> in the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>.
Jehoiada <03077> grew <07646> old <02204> and died <04191> at the age <08141> of 130 <07970> <03967>.
He was buried <06912> in the City <05892> of David <01732> with <05973> the kings <04428>, because <03588> he had accomplished <06213> good <02896> in Israel <03478> and for God <0430> and his temple <01004>.
After <0310> Jehoiada <03077> died <04194>, the officials <08269> of Judah <03063> visited <0935> the king <04428> and declared <07812> their loyalty <07812> to him. The king <04428> listened <08085> to <0413> their advice.
They abandoned <05800> the temple <01004> of the Lord <03068> God <0430> of their ancestors <01>, and worshiped <05647> the Asherah poles <0842> and idols <06091>. Because of this <02063> sinful activity <0819>, God was angry <07110> with Judah <03063> and Jerusalem <03389>.
The Lord <03068> sent <07971> prophets <05030> among them to lead <07725> them back <07725> to <0413> him. They warned <05749> the people, but they would not <03808> pay attention <0238>.
God’s <0430> Spirit <07307> energized <03847> Zechariah <02148> son <01121> of Jehoiada <03077> the priest <03548>. He stood up <05975> before <05921> the people <05971> and said <0559> to them, “This is what <03541> God <0430> says <0559>: ‘Why <04100> are you <0859> violating <05674> the commands <04687> of the Lord <03068>? You will not <03808> be prosperous <06743>! Because <03588> you have rejected <05800> the Lord <03068>, he has rejected <05800> you!’”
They plotted <07194> against <05921> him and by royal <04428> decree <04687> stoned <07275> him to death <068> in the courtyard <02691> of the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>.
King <04428> Joash <03101> disregarded <02142> <03808> the loyalty <02617> his father <01> Jehoiada <03077> had shown <06213> him and killed <02026> Jehoiada’s son <01121>. As Zechariah was dying <04191>, he said <0559>, “May the Lord <03068> take notice <07200> and seek <01875> vengeance!”
At the beginning <08622> of the year <08141> the Syrian <0758> army <02426> attacked <05921> <05927> Joash and invaded <0935> Judah <03063> and Jerusalem <03389>. They wiped out <07843> all <03605> the leaders <08269> of the people <05971> <05971> and sent <07971> all <03605> the plunder <07998> they gathered to the king <04428> of Damascus <01834>.
Even though <03588> the invading <0935> Syrian <0758> army <02426> was relatively weak <04705>, the Lord <03068> handed over <05414> to them Judah’s very <03966> large <07230> army <02428>, for <03588> the people of Judah had abandoned <05800> the Lord <03068> God <0430> of their ancestors <01>. The Syrians gave <06213> Joash <03101> what he deserved <08201>.
When they withdrew <01980>, they left <05800> Joash badly <07227> wounded <04251>. His servants <05650> plotted <07194> against <05921> him because of what he had done to the son <01121> of Jehoiada <03077> the priest <03548>. They murdered <02026> him on <05921> his bed <04296>. Thus he died <04191> and was buried <06912> in the City <05892> of David <01732>, but not <03808> in the tombs <06913> of the kings <04428>.
The conspirators <07194> were Zabad <02066> son <01121> of Shimeath <08100> (an Ammonite <05985> woman) and Jehozabad <03075> son <01121> of Shimrith <08116> (a Moabite <04125> woman).
The list of Joash’s sons <01121>, the many <07230> prophetic oracles <04853> pertaining to him, and the account of his building project <03247> on <05921> God’s <0430> temple <01004> are included <03789> in the record of <04097> the Scroll <05612> of the Kings <04428>. His son <01121> Amaziah <0558> replaced <08478> him as king <04427>.
