“I made <03772> a covenant <01285> with my eyes <05869>; how <04100> then could I entertain thoughts <0995> against <05921> a virgin <01330>?
What <04100> then would be one’s lot <02506> from God <0433> above <04605>, one’s heritage <05159> from the Almighty <07706> on high <04791>?
Is it not <03808> misfortune <0343> for the unjust <05767>, and disaster <05235> for those who work <06466> iniquity <0205>?
Does he <01931> not <03808> see <07200> my ways <01870> and count <05608> all <03605> my steps <06806>?
If <0518> I have walked <01980> in falsehood <07723>, and if my foot <07272> has hastened <02363> to deceit <04820>–
let him weigh <08254> me with honest <06664> scales <03976>; then God <0433> will discover <03045> my integrity <08538>.
If <0518> my footsteps <0838> have strayed <05186> from <04480> the way <01870>, if my heart <03820> has gone <01980> after <0310> my eyes <05869>, or if anything <03971> has defiled <01692> my hands <03709>,
then let me sow <02232> and let another <0312> eat <0398>, and let my crops <06631> be uprooted <08327>.
If <0518> my heart <03820> has been enticed <06601> by <05921> a woman <0802>, and I have lain in wait <0693> at <05921> my neighbor’s <07453> door <06607>,
then let my wife <0802> turn the millstone <02912> for another <0312> man, and may other <0312> men have sexual relations <03766> with <05921> her.
For <03588> I would have committed a shameful act <02154>, an iniquity <05771> to be judged <06414>.
For <03588> it is a fire <0784> that <01931> devours <0398> even <05704> to Destruction <011>, and it would uproot <08327> all <03605> my harvest <08393>.
“If <0518> I have disregarded <03988> the right <04941> of my male servants <05650> or my female servants <0519> when they disputed <07378> with me <05978>,
then what <04100> will I do <06213> when <03588> God <0410> confronts <06965> me in judgment; when <03588> he intervenes <06485>, how <04100> will I respond <07725> to him?
Did not <03808> the one who made <06213> me in the womb <0990> make <06213> them? Did not the same one <0259> form <03559> us in the womb <07358>?
If <0518> I have refused to give <04513> the poor <01800> what they desired <02656>, or caused the eyes <05869> of the widow <0490> to fail <03615>,
If I ate <0398> my morsel <06595> of bread myself <0905>, and did not <03808> share <0398> any of it with <04480> orphans <03490>–
but <03588> from my youth <05271> I raised <01431> the orphan like a father <01>, and from my mother’s <0517> womb <0990> I guided <05148> the widow!
If <0518> I have seen <07200> anyone about to perish <06> for lack <01097> of clothing <03830>, or a poor <034> man without <0369> a coat <03682>,
whose heart <02504> did not <03808> bless <01288> me as he warmed <02552> himself with the fleece <01488> of my sheep <03532>,
if <0518> I have raised <05130> my hand <03027> to vote against <05921> the orphan <03490>, when <03588> I saw <07200> my support <05833> in the court <08179>,
then let my arm <03802> fall <05307> from the shoulder <07929>, let my arm <0248> be broken <07665> off at the socket <07070>.
For <03588> the calamity <0343> from God <0410> was a terror <06343> to <0413> me, and by reason of his majesty <07613> I was powerless <03201> <03808>.
“If <0518> I have put <07760> my confidence <03689> in gold <02091> or said <0559> to pure gold <03800>, ‘You are my security <04009>!’
if <0518> I have rejoiced <08055> because <03588> of the extent <03524> of my wealth, or because of the great <07227> wealth <02428> my hand <03027> had gained <04672>,
if <0518> I looked <07200> at the sun <0216> when <03588> it was shining <01984>, and the moon <03394> advancing <01980> as a precious <03368> thing,
so that my heart <03820> was secretly <05643> enticed <06601>, and my hand <03027> threw <05401> them a kiss <05401> from my mouth <06310>,
then this <01931> also <01571> would be iniquity <05771> to be judged <06416>, for <03588> I would have been false <03584> to God <0410> above <04605>.
If <0518> I have rejoiced <08055> over the misfortune <06365> of my enemy <08130> or exulted <05782> because <03588> calamity <07451> found <04672> him–
I have not <03808> even permitted <05414> my mouth <02441> to sin <02398> by asking <07592> for his life <05315> through a curse <0423>–
if <0518> the members <04962> of my household <0168> have never <03808> said <0559>, ‘If only there were <05414> someone who <04310> has not <03808> been satisfied <07646> from Job’s meat <01320>!’–
But no <03808> stranger <01616> had to spend <03885> the night outside <02351>, for I opened <06605> my doors <01817> to the traveler <0734>–
if <0518> I have covered <03680> my transgressions <06588> as men <0121> do, by hiding <02934> iniquity <05771> in my heart <02243>,
because <03588> I was terrified <06206> of the great <07227> multitude <01995>, and the contempt <0937> of families <04940> terrified <02865> me, so that I remained silent <01826> and would not <03808> go <03318> outdoors <06607>–
“If <04310> only I had <05414> someone to hear <08085> me! Here <02005> is my signature <08420>– let the Almighty <07706> answer <06030> me! If only I had an indictment <05612> that my accuser <07379> <0376> had written <03789>.
Surely <0518> I would wear it proudly on <05921> my shoulder <07926>, I would bind <06029> it on me like a crown <05850>;
I would give <05046> him an accounting <04557> of my steps <06806>; like <03644> a prince <05057> I would approach <07126> him.
“If <0518> my land <0127> cried out <02199> against <05921> me and all its furrows <08525> wept <01058> together <03162>,
if <0518> I have eaten <0398> its produce <03581> without <01097> paying <03701>, or caused the death <05301> <05315> of its owners <01167>,
then let thorns <02336> sprout up <03318> in place <08478> of wheat <02406>, and in place <08478> of barley <08184>, weeds <0890>!” The words <01697> of Job <0347> are ended <08552>.
