When Ephraim <0669> spoke <01696>, there was terror <07578>; he <01931> was exalted <05375> in Israel <03478>, but he became guilty <0816> by worshiping Baal <01168> and died <04191>.
Even now <06258> they persist <03254> in sin <02398>! They make <06213> metal images <04541> for themselves, idols <06091> that they skillfully <08394> fashion from their own silver <03701>; all <03605> of them are nothing but the work <04639> of craftsmen <02796>! There is a saying <0559> about them <01992>: “Those <0120> who sacrifice <02076> to the calf <05695> idol are calf kissers <05401>!”
Therefore <03651> they will disappear like <01961> the morning <01242> mist <06051>, like early <07925> morning dew <02919> that evaporates <01980>, like chaff <04671> that is blown away <05590> from a threshing floor <01637>, like smoke <06227> that disappears through an open window <0699>.
But I <0595> am the Lord <03068> your God <0430>, who brought you out of Egypt <04714>. Therefore, you must not <03808> acknowledge <03045> any God <0430> but <02108> me; except <01115> me there is no <0369> Savior <03467>.
I <0589> cared <03045> for you in the wilderness <04057>, in the dry desert <0776> where no water was <08514>.
When they were fed <04830>, they became satisfied <07646>; when they were satisfied <07646>, they became proud <03820> <07311>; as a result <03651>, they forgot <07911> me!
So I will pounce <01961> on them like <03644> a lion <07826>; like a leopard <05246> I will lurk <07789> by the path <01870>.
I will attack <06298> them like a bear <01677> robbed <07909> of her cubs <07909>– I will rip <07167> open their chests <03820> <05458>. I will devour <0398> them there <08033> like a lion <03833>– like a wild <07704> animal <02416> would tear <01234> them apart <01234>.
I will destroy <07843> you, O Israel <03478>! Who is there to help <05828> you?
Where <0165> then <0645> is your king <04428>, that he may save <03467> you in all <03605> your cities <05892>? Where are your rulers <08199> for whom <0834> you asked, saying <0559>, “Give <05414> me a king <04428> and princes <08269>”?
I granted <05414> you a king <04428> in my anger <0639>, and I will take <03947> him away in my wrath <05678>!
The punishment <05771> of Ephraim <0669> has been decreed <06887>; his punishment <02403> is being stored up <06845> for the future.
The labor <03205> pains <02256> of a woman will overtake <0935> him <01931>, but the baby <01121> will lack <03808> wisdom <02450>; when <03588> the time <06256> arrives, he will not <03808> come out <05975> of the womb <04866>!
Will I deliver <06299> them from the power <03027> of Sheol <07585>? No, I will not! Will <0165> I redeem <01350> them from death <04194>? No, I will <0165> not! O Death <04194>, bring on your plagues <01698>! O Sheol <07585>, bring on your destruction <06987>! My eyes <05869> will not show <05641> any compassion <05164>!
Even though <03588> he flourishes <06500> like a reed plant, a scorching east wind <06921> will come <0935>, a wind <07307> from the Lord <03068> rising up <05927> from the desert <04057>. As a result, his spring <04599> will dry up <0954>; his well <04726> will become dry <02717>. That <01931> wind will spoil <08154> all <03605> his delightful <02532> foods in the containers <03627> in his storehouse <0214>.
Samaria <08111> will be held guilty <0816>, because <03588> she rebelled <04784> against her God <0430>. They will fall <05307> by the sword <02719>, their infants <05768> will be dashed to the ground <07376>– their pregnant women <02030> will be ripped open <01234>.
