Jacob heard <08085> that Laban’s <03837> sons <01121> were complaining <0559>, “Jacob <03290> has taken <03947> everything <03605> that belonged <0834> to our father <01>! He has gotten <06213> rich <03519> at our father’s <01> expense!”
When Jacob <03290> saw <07200> the look <02009> on Laban’s <03837> face <06440>, he could tell his attitude toward <05973> him had changed.
The Lord <03068> said <0559> to <0413> Jacob <03290>, “Return <07725> to <0413> the land <0776> of your fathers <01> and to your relatives <04138>. I will be <01961> with <05973> you.”
So Jacob <03290> sent <07971> a message <07121> for Rachel <07354> and Leah <03812> to come <07121> to <0413> the field <07704> where his flocks <06629> were.
There he said <0559> to them, “I <0595> can tell that <03588> your father’s <01> attitude <06440> toward <0413> me has changed, but the God <0430> of my father <01> has been <01961> with me <05978>.
You <0859> know <03045> that <03588> I’ve worked <05647> for your father <01> as hard as I could <03581>,
but your father <01> has humiliated <02048> me and changed <02498> my wages <04909> ten <06235> times <04489>. But God <0430> has not <03808> permitted <05414> him to do me <05978> any harm <07489>.
If <0518> he said <0559>, ‘The speckled <05348> animals will be <01961> your wage <07939>,’ then the entire <03605> flock <06629> gave birth <03205> to speckled offspring <05348>. But if <0518> he said <0559>, ‘The streaked <06124> animals will be <01961> your wage <07939>,’ then the entire <03605> flock <06629> gave birth <03205> to streaked offspring <06124>.
In this way God <0430> has snatched away <05337> your father’s <01> livestock <04735> and given <05414> them to me.
“Once during <01961> breeding <06629> <03179> season <06256> I saw <07200> in a dream <02472> that the male goats <06260> mating <05921> <05927> with the flock <06629> were streaked <06124>, speckled <05348>, and spotted <01261>.
In the dream <02472> the angel <04397> of God <0430> said <0559> to <0413> me, ‘Jacob <03290>!’ ‘Here <02009> I am!’ I replied <0559>.
Then he said <0559>, ‘Observe <07200> <05869> <05375> that all <03605> the male goats <06260> mating <05921> <05927> with the flock <06629> are streaked <06124>, speckled <05348>, or spotted <01261>, for <03588> I have observed <07200> all <03605> that <0834> Laban <03837> has done <06213> to you.
I <0595> am the God <0410> of Bethel <01008>, where <08033> <0834> you anointed <04886> the sacred stone <04676> and made <05087> a vow <05088> to me. Now <06258> leave <03318> <06965> this <02063> land <0776> immediately and return <07725> to <0413> your native <04138> land <0776>.’”
Then Rachel <07354> and Leah <03812> replied <06030> to him, “Do we still <05750> have any portion <02506> or inheritance <05159> in our father’s <01> house <01004>?
Hasn’t <03808> he treated <02803> us like foreigners <05237>? He not only sold <04376> us, but completely wasted <0398> <0398> the money <03701> paid for us!
Surely <03588> all <03605> the wealth <06239> that <0834> God <0430> snatched away <05337> from our father <01> belongs to us and to our <01931> children <01121>. So now <06258> do <06213> everything <03605> God <0430> has told <0559> you.”
So Jacob <03290> immediately put <05375> his children <01121> and his wives <0802> on <05921> the camels <01581>.
He took away <05090> all <03605> the livestock <04735> he had acquired <07408> in Paddan Aram <06307> and all <03605> his moveable property <07399> that <0834> he had accumulated <07408>. Then he set out <0935> toward the land <0776> of Canaan <03667> to return to <0413> his father <01> Isaac <03327>.
While Laban <03837> had gone <01980> to shear <01494> his sheep <06629>, Rachel <07354> stole <01589> the household idols <08655> that <0834> belonged to her father <01>.
Jacob <03290> also deceived <03820> <01589> Laban <03837> the Aramean <0761> by <05921> not <01097> telling <05046> him that <03588> he <01931> was leaving <01272>.
He <01931> left <01272> with all <03605> he owned. He quickly crossed <05674> <06965> the Euphrates <05104> River and headed <07760> for <06440> the hill country <02022> of Gilead <01568>.
Three <07992> days <03117> later Laban <03837> discovered <05046> Jacob <03290> had left <01272>.
So he took <03947> his relatives <0251> with <05973> him and pursued <0310> <07291> Jacob for seven <07651> days <03117>. He caught up <01692> with him in the hill country <02022> of Gilead <01568>.
But God <0430> came <0935> to <0413> Laban <03837> the Aramean <0761> in a dream <02472> at night <03915> and warned <0559> him, “Be careful <08104> that you neither <06435> bless <02896> <01696> nor <05704> curse <07451> Jacob <03290>.”
Laban <03837> overtook <05381> Jacob <03290>, and when Jacob <03290> pitched <08628> his tent <0168> in the hill country <02022> of Gilead, Laban <03837> and his relatives <0251> set up camp <08628> there <02022> too.
“What <04100> have you done <06213>?” Laban <03837> demanded <0559> of Jacob <03290>. “You’ve deceived <03824> <01589> me and carried away <05090> my daughters <01323> as if they were captives <07617> of war <02719>!
Why <04100> did you run away <01272> secretly <02244> and deceive <01589> me? Why didn’t <03808> you tell <05046> me so I could send <07971> you off with a celebration <08057> complete with singing <07892>, tambourines <08596>, and harps <03658>?
You didn’t <03808> even allow <05203> me to kiss <05401> my daughters <01323> and my grandchildren <01121> good-bye. You have acted foolishly <06213> <05528>!
I have <03426> the power <03027> <0410> to <05973> do <06213> you harm <07451>, but the God <0430> of your father <01> told <0559> me last night <0570>, ‘Be careful <08104> that you neither bless <02896> <01696> nor <05704> curse <07451> Jacob <03290>.’
Now <06258> I understand that you have gone away <01980> <01980> because <03588> you longed desperately <03700> <03700> for your father’s <01> house <01004>. Yet why <04100> did you steal <01589> my gods <0430>?”
“I left secretly because <03588> I was afraid <03372>!” Jacob <03290> replied <06030> to Laban <03837>. “I thought <0559> you might <06435> take <01497> your daughters <01323> away <01497> from <05973> me by force <01497>.
Whoever <0834> has taken <04672> your gods <0430> will be put to death <02421> <03808>! In the presence <05048> of our relatives <0251> identify <05234> whatever <04100> is yours and take <03947> it.” (Now Jacob <03290> did not <03808> know <03045> that <03588> Rachel <07354> had stolen <01589> them.)
So Laban <03837> entered <0935> Jacob’s <03290> tent <0168>, and Leah’s <03812> tent <0168>, and the tent <0168> of the two <08147> female servants <0519>, but he did not <03808> find <04672> the idols. Then he left <03318> Leah’s <03812> tent <0168> and entered <0935> Rachel’s <07354>.
(Now Rachel <07354> had taken <03947> the idols <08655> and put <07760> them inside her camel’s <01581> saddle and sat <03427> on <05921> them.) Laban <03837> searched <04959> the whole <03605> tent <0168>, but did not <03808> find <04672> them.
Rachel said <0559> to <0413> her father <01>, “Don’t <0408> be angry <05869> <02734>, my lord <0113>. I cannot <03201> <03808> stand up <06965> in your presence <06440> because <03588> I am having <01870> my period <0802>.” So he searched <02664> thoroughly, but did not <03808> find <04672> the idols <08655>.
Jacob <03290> became angry <02734> and argued <07378> with Laban <03837>. “What <04100> did I do wrong <06588>?” he demanded <0559> of Laban <03837>. “What <04100> sin <02403> of mine prompted you to chase <01814> after <0310> me in hot pursuit <01814>?
When <03588> you searched <04959> through all <03605> my goods <03627>, did you find <04672> anything <03605> that belonged to you <01004> <03627>? Set <07760> it here before <05048> my relatives <0251> and yours <0251>, and let them settle the dispute <03198> between <0996> the two <08147> of us!
“I <0595> have been with <05973> you for the past <02088> twenty <06242> years <08141>. Your ewes <07353> and female goats <05795> have not <03808> miscarried <07921>, nor <03808> have I eaten <0398> rams <0352> from your flocks <06629>.
Animals torn <02966> by wild beasts I never <03808> brought <0935> to <0413> you; I always absorbed the loss <02398> myself <0595>. You always made me pay <01245> for every missing animal, whether it was taken <01589> by day <03117> or at night <03915>.
I was consumed <0398> by scorching heat <02721> during the day <03117> and by piercing cold <07140> at night <03915>, and I went without sleep <08142>.
This <02088> was my lot for twenty <06242> years <08141> in your house <01004>: I worked like a slave <05647> for you– fourteen <06240> <0702> years <08141> for your two <08147> daughters <01323> and six <08337> years <08141> for your flocks <06629>, but you changed <02498> my wages <04909> ten <06235> times <04489>!
If <03884> the God <0430> of my father <01>– the God <0430> of Abraham <085>, the one whom Isaac <03327> fears <06343>– had not been <01961> with me, you would certainly <03588> have sent <07971> me away <07971> empty-handed <07387>! But God <0430> saw <07200> how I was oppressed <06040> and how hard I worked <03018>, and he rebuked <03198> you last night <0570>.”
Laban <03837> replied <0559> <06030> to <0413> Jacob <03290>, “These women <01323> are my daughters <01323>, these children <01121> are my grandchildren <01121>, and these flocks <06629> are my flocks <06629>. All <03605> that <0834> you <0859> see <07200> belongs to me. But how <04100> can I harm <06213> these <0428> daughters <01323> of mine today <03117> or <0176> the children <01121> to whom <0834> they have given birth <03205>?
So now <06258>, come <01980>, let’s make <03772> a formal agreement <01285>, you <0859> and I <0589>, and it will be <01961> proof <05707> that we have made peace.”
So Jacob <03290> took <03947> a stone <068> and set <07311> it up <07311> as a memorial pillar <04676>.
Then he <03290> said <0559> to his relatives <0251>, “Gather <03950> stones <068>.” So they brought <03947> stones <068> and put <06213> them in a pile <01530>. They ate <0398> there <08033> by <05921> the pile <01530> of stones.
Laban <03837> called <07121> it Jegar Sahadutha <03026>, but Jacob <03290> called <07121> it Galeed <01567>.
Laban <03837> said <0559>, “This <02088> pile <01530> of stones is a witness <05707> of our agreement today <03117>.” That is why <03651> it was called <08034> <07121> Galeed <01567>.
It was also called Mizpah <04709> because <0834> he said <0559>, “May the Lord <03068> watch <06822> between <0996> us when <03588> we are out of sight <05641> of one <0582> another <07453>.
If <0518> you mistreat <06031> my daughters <01323> or if <0518> you take <03947> wives <0802> besides <05921> my daughters <01323>, although no <0369> one <0376> else is with <05973> us, realize <07200> that God <0430> is witness <05707> to your actions.”
“Here is <02009> this pile <01530> of stones and this <02088> pillar <04676> I have set up <03384> between <0996> me and <0996> you,” Laban <03837> said <0559> to Jacob <03290>.
“This <02088> pile <01530> of stones <01530> and the pillar <04676> are reminders <05713> <05707> that I <0589> will not <03808> pass <05674> beyond <0413> this <02088> pile <01530> to come to harm you and that you <0859> will not <03808> pass <05674> beyond <0413> this <02088> pile <01530> and this <02063> pillar <04676> to come to harm <07451> me.
May the God <0430> of Abraham <085> and the god <0430> of Nahor <05152>, the gods <0430> of their father <01>, judge <08199> between <0996> us.” Jacob <03290> took an oath <07650> by the God whom his father <01> Isaac <03327> feared <06343>.
Then Jacob <03290> offered <02076> a sacrifice <02077> on the mountain <02022> and invited <07121> his relatives <0251> to eat <0398> the meal <03899>. They ate <0398> the meal <03899> and spent <03885> the night on the mountain <02022>.
Early <07925> in the morning <01242> Laban <03837> kissed <05401> his grandchildren <01121> and his daughters <01323> goodbye and blessed <01288> them. Then Laban <03837> left <01980> and returned <07725> home <04725>.
