18Now <1161> the birth of Jesus <2424> Christ <5547> happened <1078> this way <3779>. While his <846> mother <3384> Mary <3137> was engaged <3423> to Joseph <2501>, but before <4250> they came together <4905>, she was found <2147> to be pregnant <1722> <1064> <2192> through <1537> the Holy <40> Spirit <4151>.
19Because <1161> Joseph <2501>, her <846> husband <435> to be, was a righteous <1342> man, and <2532> because he did not <3361> want <2309> to disgrace <1165> her <846>, he intended <1014> to divorce <630> her <846> privately <2977>.
20When he <846> had contemplated <1760> this <5023>, an angel <32> of the Lord <2962> appeared <5316> to him <846> in <2596> a dream <3677> and said <3004>, “Joseph <2501>, son <5207> of David <1138>, do not <3361> be afraid <5399> to take <3880> Mary <3137> as your <4675> wife <1135>, because <1063> the child conceived <1080> in <1722> her <846> is <1510> from <1537> the Holy <40> Spirit <4151>.
21She will give birth <5088> to a son <5207> and <2532> you will name <3686> him <846> Jesus <2424>, because <1063> he <846> will save <4982> his <846> people <2992> from <575> their <846> sins <266>.”
22This <5124> all <3650> happened <1096> so that <2443> what was spoken <4483> by <5259> the Lord <2962> through <1223> the prophet <4396> would be fulfilled <4137>:
23“Look <2400>! The <3588> virgin <3933> will conceive <1064> and <2532> bear <5088> a son <5207>, and <2532> they will call <2564> him <846> Emmanuel <1694>,” which <3739> means <3177> “God <2316> with <3326> us <2257>.”
24When Joseph <2501> awoke <1453> from <575> sleep <5258> he did <4160> what <5613> the angel <32> of the Lord <2962> told <4367> him <846>. He <2532> took <3880> his <846> wife <1135>,
25but <2532> did not <3756> have marital <1097> relations with her <846> until <2193> she gave birth <5088> to a son <5207>, whom <3739> he named <2564> <3686> Jesus <2424>.
