Listen <08085> to what <0834> the Lord <03068> says <0559>: “Get up <06965>! Defend <07378> yourself before <0854> the mountains <02022>! Present <06963> your case <08085> before the hills <01389>!”
Hear <08085> the Lord’s <03069> accusation <07379>, you mountains <02022>, you enduring <0386> foundations <04146> of the earth <0776>! For <03588> the Lord <03069> has a case <07379> against <05973> his people <05971>; he has a dispute <03198> with <05973> Israel <03478>!
“My people <05971>, how <04100> have I wronged <06213> you? How <04100> have I wearied <03811> you? Answer <06030> me!
In fact <03588>, I brought <05927> you up <05927> from the land <0776> of Egypt <04714>, I delivered <06299> you from that place <01004> of slavery <05650>. I sent <07971> Moses <04872>, Aaron <0175>, and Miriam <04813> to lead you.
My people <05971>, recall <02142> how <04100> King <04428> Balak <01111> of Moab <04124> planned <03289> to harm you, how <04100> Balaam <01109> son <01121> of Beor <01160> responded <06030> to him. Recall how you journeyed from <04480> Shittim <07851> to <05704> Gilgal <01537>, so <04616> you might acknowledge <03045> that the Lord <03068> has treated you fairly <06666>.”
With what <04100> should I enter <06923> the Lord’s <03068> presence? With what should I bow <03721> before the sovereign <04791> God <0430>? Should I enter <06923> his presence with burnt offerings <05930>, with year-old <08141> <01121> calves <05695>?
Will the Lord <03068> accept <07521> a thousand <0505> rams <0352>, or ten thousand <07233> streams <05158> of olive oil <08081>? Should I give <05414> him my firstborn child <01060> as payment <05414> for my rebellion <06588>, my offspring <0990> <06529>– my own flesh and blood <05315>– for my sin <02403>?
He has told <05046> you, O man <0120>, what <04100> is good <02896>, and what <04100> the Lord <03068> really wants <01875> from <04480> you: He wants you to promote <06213> justice <04941>, to be faithful <02617> <0160>, and to live <01980> obediently <06800> before <05973> your God <0430>.
Listen! The Lord <03068> is calling <07121> <06963> to the city <05892>! It is wise <08454> to respect <03372> your authority <08034>, O Lord! Listen <08085>, O nation <04294>, and those <04310> assembled <03259> in the city!
“I will not overlook, O sinful <07563> house <01004>, the dishonest <07562> gain <0214> you have hoarded away, or the smaller-than-standard <07332> measure <0374> I hate <02194> so much.
I do not condone <02135> the use of rigged <07562> scales <03976>, or a bag <03599> of deceptive <04820> weights <068>.
The city’s rich <06223> men think nothing of resorting <04390> to violence <02555>; her inhabitants <03427> lie <08267>, their tongues <03956> speak <01696> deceptive <07423> words <06310>.
I <0589> will strike <05221> <02470> you brutally <05221> <02470> and <01571> destroy <08074> you because <05921> of your sin <02403>.
You <0859> will eat <0398>, but not <03808> be satisfied <07646>. Even if you have the strength to overtake some prey <03445>, you will not <03808> be able to carry <05253> it away <05253>; if <0834> you do happen <06403> to carry away <06403> something, I will deliver <05414> it over to the sword <02719>.
You <0859> will plant crops <02232>, but will not <03808> harvest <07114> them; you <0859> will squeeze <01869> oil from the olives <02132>, but you will have no <03808> oil <08081> to rub <05480> on your bodies; you will squeeze juice from the grapes <08492>, but you will have no <03808> wine <03196> to drink <08354>.
You implement <08104> the regulations <02708> of Omri <06018>, and all <03605> the practices <04639> of Ahab’s <0256> dynasty <01004>; you follow <01980> their policies <04156>. Therefore <04616> I will make <05414> you an appalling sight <08047>, the city’s inhabitants <03427> will be taunted <05375> derisively <08322>, and nations <05971> will mock <02781> all of you.”
