At that time <06256> I will be <01961> the God <0430> of all <03605> the clans <04940> of Israel <03478> and they <01992> will be <01961> my people <05971>. I, the Lord <03068>, affirm <05002> it!”
The Lord <03068> says <0559>, “The people <05971> of Israel <03478> who survived <02719> death at the hands of the enemy <08300> will find <04672> favor <02580> in the wilderness <04057> as they journey <01980> to find rest <07280> for themselves.
In a far-off <07350> land the Lord <03068> will manifest <07200> himself to them. He will say to them, ‘I have loved <0160> you with an everlasting <05769> love <0157>. That is why <03651> <05921> I have continued <04900> to be faithful <02617> to you.
I will rebuild <01129> <05750> you, my dear children <01330> Israel <03478>, so that you will once again be built up <01129>. Once again <05750> you will take up <05710> the tambourine <08596> and join <03318> in the happy throng <07832> of dancers <04234>.
Once again <05750> you will plant <05193> vineyards <03754> on the hills <02022> of Samaria <08111>. Those who plant <05193> them will once again enjoy <02490> their fruit <05193>.
Yes <03588>, a time is <03426> coming when <03117> watchmen <05341> will call <07121> out on the mountains <02022> of Ephraim <0669>, “Come <06965>! Let us go <05927> to Zion <06726> to <0413> worship the Lord <03068> our God <0430>!”’”
Moreover <03541>, the Lord <03068> says <0559>, “Sing <07442> for joy <08057> for the descendants of Jacob <03290>. Utter glad shouts <06670> for that foremost of the nations <01471> <07218>. Make your praises <01984> heard <08085>. Then say <0559>, ‘Lord <03068>, rescue <03467> your people <05971>. Deliver those of Israel <03478> who remain alive <07611>.’
Then I will reply, ‘I will bring <0935> them back from the land <0776> of the north <06828>. I will gather <06908> them in from the distant parts <03411> of the earth <0776>. Blind <05787> and lame <06455> people will come with them, so will pregnant women <02030> and women about to give birth <03205>. A vast <01419> throng of people <06951> will come back <07725> here <02008>.
They will come back <0935> shedding tears <01065> of contrition. I will bring <02986> them back <02986> praying prayers <08469> of repentance. I will lead <01980> them besides <0413> streams <05158> of water <04325>, along smooth <03477> paths <01870> where they will never <03808> stumble <03782>. I will do this <01961> because <03588> I am Israel’s <03478> father <01>; Ephraim <0669> is my firstborn son <01060>.’”
Hear <08085> what <01697> the Lord <03068> has to say, O nations <01471>. Proclaim <05046> it in the faraway <04801> lands along the sea <0339>. Say <0559>, “The one who scattered <02219> Israel <03478> will regather <06908> them. He will watch <08104> over his people like a shepherd <07462> watches over his flock <05739>.”
For <03588> the Lord <03068> will rescue <06299> the descendants of Jacob <03290>. He will secure <01350> their release from <04480> those who had overpowered <02389> them.
They will come <0935> and shout for joy <07442> on Mount <04791> Zion <06726>. They will be radiant <05102> with joy over <0413> the good things <02898> the Lord <03068> provides, the grain <01715>, the fresh wine <08492>, the olive oil <03323>, the young <01121> sheep <06629> and calves <01241> he has given to them. They will be <01961> like a well-watered <07302> garden <01588> and will not <03808> grow faint or weary <01669> any more <03254>.
The Lord says, “At that time <0227> young women <01330> will dance <04234> and be glad <08055>. Young men <0970> and old men <02205> will rejoice. I will turn <02015> their grief <060> into gladness <08342>. I will give them comfort <05162> and joy <08055> in place of their sorrow <03015>.
I will provide <07301> the priests <03548> with abundant provisions <01880>. My people <05971> will be filled <07646> to the full with <0854> the good things <02898> I provide.”
The Lord <03068> says <0559>, “A sound <06963> is heard <08085> in Ramah <07414>, a sound of crying <05092> in bitter <08563> grief <01065>. It is the sound of Rachel <07354> weeping <01058> for <05921> her children <01121> and refusing <03985> to be comforted <05162>, because <03588> her children <01121> are gone <0369>.”
The Lord <03068> says <0559> to her, “Stop <04513> crying <01065>! Do not shed any more tears <01832>! For <03588> your heartfelt <06468> repentance will be rewarded <07939>. Your children will return <07725> from the land <0776> of the enemy <0341>. I, the Lord <03068>, affirm <05002> it!
Indeed, there is <03426> hope <08615> for your posterity <0319>. Your children <01121> will return <07725> to their own territory <01366>. I, the Lord <03068>, affirm <05002> it!
I have indeed heard <08085> <08085> the people of Israel <0669> say mournfully <05110>, ‘We were like a calf <05695> untrained <03925> <03808> to the yoke. You disciplined <03256> us and we learned <03256> from it. Let us come back <07725> to you and we will do so, for <03588> you <0859> are the Lord <03068> our God <0430>.
For <03588> after <0310> we turned away <07725> from you we repented <05162>. After <0310> we came to our senses <03045> we beat <05606> our breasts <03409> in sorrow. We are ashamed <0954> and humiliated <03637> because <03588> of the disgraceful <02781> things we did previously <05271>.’
Indeed <0518>, the people of Israel <0669> are my dear <03357> children <01121>. They are the children <03206> I take delight <08191> in. For <03588> even though <01767> I must often rebuke <01696> them, I still <05750> remember <02142> them <05921> with fondness. So <03651> I am deeply <04578> moved <01993> with pity <07355> for them and will surely have compassion <07355> on them. I, the Lord <03068>, affirm <05002> it!
I will say, ‘My dear children of Israel, keep in <05324> mind the road <06725> you took <07760> when you were carried off. Mark off <07896> in your minds <03820> the landmarks <04546>. Make a mental note of telltale signs <08564> marking <01980> the way <01870> back <01980>. Return <07725>, my dear children <01330> of Israel <03478>. Return <07725> to <0413> these cities <05892> of yours <0428>.
How <04970> long <05704> will you vacillate <02559>, you who were once like an unfaithful <07728> daughter <01323>? For <03588> I, the Lord <03068>, promise to bring <01254> about something new <02319> on the earth <0776>, something as unique as a woman <05347> protecting <05437> a man <01397>!’”
The Lord <03068> God <0430> of Israel <03478> who rules over all <06635> says <0559>, “I will restore <07725> the people <07622> of Judah <03063> to their land <0776> and to their towns <05892>. When I do, they will again <05750> say <0559> of Jerusalem, ‘May the Lord <03068> bless <01288> you, you holy <06944> mountain <02022>, the place where righteousness <06664> dwells <05116>.’
The land of Judah <03063> will be inhabited <03427> by people who live in its towns <05892> as well as by farmers <0406> and shepherds <05265> with their flocks <05739>.
I will fully satisfy <07301> the needs of those <05315> who <03605> are weary <05889> and fully refresh <04390> the souls <05315> of those who are faint <01669>.
Then they will say, ‘Under <05921> these <02063> conditions I can enjoy sweet <06149> sleep <08142> when I wake up <06974> and look <07200> around.’”
“Indeed <02009>, a time <03117> is coming <0935>,” says <05002> the Lord <03068>, “when I will cause people <0120> and animals <0929> to sprout up in the lands <01004> of Israel <03478> and Judah <03063>.
In the past I saw <08245> to it that <0834> they were uprooted <05428> and torn down <02040> <05422>, that they were destroyed <06> and demolished <05422>. But now I will see <08245> to it that they are built up <01129> and firmly planted <05193>. I, the Lord <03068>, affirm <05002> it!”
“When that time <03117> comes, people will no <03808> longer <05750> say <0559>, ‘The parents <01> have eaten <0398> sour grapes <01155>, but the children’s <01121> teeth <08127> have grown numb <06949>.’
Rather, each person <0376> will die <04191> for his own sins <05771>. The teeth <08127> of the person <0120> who eats <0398> the sour grapes <01155> will themselves grow numb <06949>.
“Indeed <02009>, a time <03117> is coming <0935>,” says <05002> the Lord <03068>, “when I will make <03772> a new <02319> covenant <01285> with <0854> the people <01004> of Israel <03478> and Judah <03063>.
It will not <03808> be like the old covenant <01285> that <0834> I made <03772> with <0854> their ancestors <01> when <03117> I delivered <02388> them from Egypt <04714>. For <0834> they <01992> violated <06565> that covenant <01285>, even though I <0595> was like a faithful husband <01166> to them,” says <05002> the Lord <03068>.
“But <03588> I will make <03772> a new covenant <01285> with <0854> the whole nation <01004> of Israel <03478> after <0310> I plant them <01992> back in the land,” says <05002> the Lord <03068>. “I will put <05414> my law <08451> within <07130> them and write <03789> it on <05921> their hearts <03820> and minds <03820>. I will be <01961> their God <0430> and they <01992> will be <01961> my people <05971>.
“People <0376> will no <03808> longer <05750> need to teach <03925> their neighbors <07453> and relatives <0251> to know <03045> me. For <03588> all <03605> of them, from the least <06996> important to <05704> the most <01419> important, will know <03045> me,” says <05002> the Lord <03068>. “For <03588> I will forgive <05545> their sin <05771> and will no <03808> longer <05750> call to mind <02142> the wrong <02403> they have done.”
The Lord <03068> has made a promise <0559> to Israel. He promises <05414> it as the one who fixed <02708> the sun <08121> to give light <0216> by day <03119> and the moon <03394> and stars <03556> to give light <0216> by night <03915>. He promises it as the one who stirs up <07280> the sea <03220> so that its waves <01530> roll <01993>. He promises it as the one who is known <08034> as the Lord <03068> who rules over all <06635>.
The Lord <03068> affirms <05002>, “The descendants <02233> of Israel <03478> will not cease <07673> forever <03117> <03605> to be <01961> a nation <01471> in my sight <06440>. That could only happen if <0518> the fixed ordering <02706> of the heavenly lights were to cease to operate <04185> before <06440> me.”
The Lord <03068> says <0559>, “I <0589> will not reject <03988> all <03605> the descendants <02233> of Israel <03478> because of <05921> all <03605> that <0834> they have done <06213>. That could only happen if <0518> the heavens <08064> above <04605> could be measured <04058> or the foundations <04146> of the earth <0776> below <04295> could all be explored <02713>,” says <05002> the Lord <03068>.
“Indeed <02009> a time <03117> is coming,” says <05002> the Lord <03068>, “when the city of Jerusalem will be rebuilt <01129> as my special city <05892>. It will be built from the Tower <04026> of Hananel <02606> westward to the Corner <06438> Gate <08179>.
The boundary <04060> line <06961> will extend <03318> beyond <05750> that, straight west <05048> from there to the Hill <01389> of Gareb <01619> and then turn southward <05437> to Goah <01601>.
The whole <03605> valley <06010> where dead bodies <06297> and sacrificial ashes <01880> are thrown and all <03605> the terraced fields <08309> out to <05704> the Kidron <06939> Valley <05158> on the east <04217> as far <05704> north <06438> as the Horse <05483> Gate <08179> will be included within this city that is sacred <06944> to the Lord <03068>. The city will never <05769> <03808> again <05750> be torn down <05428> or <03808> destroyed <02040>.”
