Now<3767> even<2532> the first<4413> covenant had<2192> regulations<1345> of divine<2999> worship<2999> and the earthly<2886> sanctuary<40>.
For there was a tabernacle<4633> prepared<2680>, the outer<4413> one<4387>, in which<3739> were the lampstand<3087> and the table<5132> and the sacred<4286> bread<740>; this<3748> is called<3004> the holy<40> place<40>.
Behind<3326> the second<1208> veil<2665> there was a tabernacle<4633> which is called<3004> the Holy<40> of Holies<40>,
having<2192> a golden<5552> altar<2369> of incense<2369> and the ark<2787> of the covenant<1242> covered<4028> on all<3840> sides<3840> with gold<5553>, in which<3739> was a golden<5552> jar<4713> holding<2192> the manna<3131>, and Aaron's<2> rod<4464> which budded<985>, and the tables<4109> of the covenant<1242>;
and above<5231> it were the cherubim<5502> of glory<1391> overshadowing<2683> the mercy<2435> seat<2435>; but of these<3739> things<3739> we cannot<3756> now<3568> speak<3004> in detail<3313>.
Now<1161> when these<3778> things<3778> have been so<3779> prepared<2680>, the priests<2409> are continually<1223><3956> entering<1524> the outer<4413> tabernacle<4633> performing<2005> the divine<2999> worship<2999>,
but into the second<1208>, only<3441> the high<749> priest<749> enters once<530> a year<1763>, not without<5565> taking blood<129>, which<3739> he offers<4374> for himself<1438> and for the sins<51> of the people<2992> committed in ignorance<51>.
The Holy<40> Spirit<4151> is signifying<1213> this<3778>, that the way<3598> into the holy<40> place<40> has not yet<3380> been disclosed<5319> while the outer<4413> tabernacle<4633> is still<2089> standing<4714>,
which<3748> is a symbol<3850> for the present<1764> time<2540>. Accordingly<2596> both<5037> gifts<1435> and sacrifices<2378> are offered<4374> which cannot<1410><3361> make<5048> the worshiper<3000> perfect<5048> in conscience<4893>,
since they relate only<3440> to food<1033> and drink<4188> and various<1313> washings<909>, regulations<1345> for the body<4561> imposed<1945> until<3360> a time<2540> of reformation<1357>.
But when Christ<5547> appeared<3854> as a high<749> priest<749> of the good<18> things<18> to come<1096>, He entered through<1223> the greater<3173> and more<5046> perfect<5046> tabernacle<4633>, not made<5499> with hands<5499>, that is to say, not of this<3778> creation<2937>;
and not through<1223> the blood<129> of goats<5131> and calves<3448>, but through<1223> His own<2398> blood<129>, He entered<1525> the holy<40> place<40> once<2178> for all<2178>, having obtained<2147> eternal<166> redemption<3085>.
For if<1487> the blood<129> of goats<5131> and bulls<5022> and the ashes<4700> of a heifer<1151> sprinkling<4472> those<3588> who have been defiled<2840> sanctify<37> for the cleansing<2514> of the flesh<4561>,
how<4214> much<4214> more<3123> will the blood<129> of Christ<5547>, who<3739> through<1223> the eternal<166> Spirit<4151> offered<4374> Himself<1438> without<299> blemish<299> to God<2316>, cleanse<2511> your conscience<4893> from dead<3498> works<2041> to serve<3000> the living<2198> God<2316>?
For this<3778> reason<1223> He is the mediator<3316> of a new<2537> covenant<1242>, so<3704> that, since a death<2288> has taken<1096> place<1096> for the redemption<629> of the transgressions<3847> that were committed under<1909> the first<4413> covenant<1242>, those<3588> who have been called<2564> may receive<2983> the promise<1860> of the eternal<166> inheritance<2817>.
For where<3699> a covenant<1242> is, there must of necessity<318> be the death<2288> of the one who made<1303> it.
For a covenant<1242> is valid<949> only when men are dead<3498>, for it is never<3379> in force<2480> while<3753> the one who made<1303> it lives<2198>.
Therefore<3606> even<3761> the first<4413> covenant was not inaugurated<1457> without<5565> blood<129>.
For when every<3956> commandment<1785> had been spoken<2980> by Moses<3475> to all<3956> the people<2992> according<2596> to the Law<3551>, he took<2983> the blood<129> of the calves<3448> and the goats<5131>, with water<5204> and scarlet<2847> wool<2053> and hyssop<5301>, and sprinkled<4472> both<5037> the book<975> itself<846> and all<3956> the people<2992>,
saying<3004>, "THIS<3778> IS THE BLOOD<129> OF THE COVENANT<1242> WHICH<3739> GOD<2316> COMMANDED<1781> YOU."
And in the same<3668> way<3668> he sprinkled<4472> both<2532> the tabernacle<4633> and all<3956> the vessels<4632> of the ministry<3009> with the blood<129>.
And according<2596> to the Law<3551>, one may almost<4975> say, all<3956> things<3956> are cleansed<2511> with blood<129>, and without<5565> shedding<130> of blood<130> there is no<3756> forgiveness<859>.
Therefore<3767> it was necessary<318> for the copies<5262> of the things in the heavens<3772> to be cleansed<2511> with these<3778>, but the heavenly<2032> things<2032> themselves<846> with better<2909> sacrifices<2378> than<3844> these<3778>.
For Christ<5547> did not enter<1525> a holy<40> place<40> made<5499> with hands<5499>, a mere copy<499> of the true<228> one<228>, but into heaven<3772> itself<846>, now<3568> to appear<1718> in the presence<4383> of God<2316> for us;
nor<3761> was it that He would offer<4374> Himself<1438> often<4178>, as the high<749> priest<749> enters<1525> the holy<40> place<40> year<1763> by year<1763> with blood<129> that is not his own<245>.
Otherwise<1893>, He would have needed<1163> to suffer<3958> often<4178> since<575> the foundation<2602> of the world<2889>; but now<3570> once<530> at the consummation<4930> of the ages<165> He has been manifested<5319> to put<115> away<115> sin<266> by the sacrifice<2378> of Himself<846>.
And inasmuch<2596><3745> as it is appointed<606> for men<444> to die<599> once<530> and after<3326> this<3778> comes judgment<2920>,
so<3779> Christ<5547> also<2532>, having been offered<4374> once<530> to bear<399> the sins<266> of many<4183>, will appear<3708> a second<1208> time<1208> for salvation<4991> without<5565> reference to sin<266>, to those<3588> who eagerly<553> await<553> Him.
